THE BAY AFTER THE BATTLES*
A CAVALRY SKIRMISH—RETREAT
AND LOSS OF THE ENEMY.
Monterey, 6 miles from Shiloh, )
Tuesday 10 o’clock, A. M. April 8, 1862. ) j
Meeting with no opportunity to send tor
ward tuy letter of last night, 1 have opened it
for the purpose of bringing up the.narrative
to the present hour.
Neither party has showed a disposition to
renew the fight this morning. We have not
sought the Federals and they have not
sought us. Roth sides seem to have had
enough of battle. After scowling at each
other, like two exhausted pugilists, with
bloodshot eyes and bruised and battered
bodies, they have turned away, and left the
i ute-t still undecided. The Confederates
:a ijuietly returning to their lines, and the
Federals to theirs. We have burnt a good
many of their tents, and brought away a
srrcat deal of their baggage and camp prop
« t,, and all the guns captured on Sunday.
I'he medical tores were to have been re
moved yesterday, but the renewal of the
light early in the morning prevented it. We
took other guns yesterday, and lost four be
longing to Sanford’s Mississippi battery.—
General Rreekinridge bad ordered the bat
tery to be withdrawn, but the officer in
charge waited to tire a few more shots, and
thu , lost a portion of his guns. We lost no
small arms or prisoners that 1 have heard of,
N'cept such old muskets as were thrown
; ide by our troops for the superior arms
1 if by the enemy. We also brought away
•' number of wagons and horses, and some
ambulance-. Rut no account has yet been
taken of our captures, and I forbear enter-
U" into further detail- until reliable date
'•an be obtained.
For the same reason, I shall oflbr nonpin
ii re. to tin* number ot kiljed and wounded
o either side. I hope the Confederate l<»s
--1 not so large as many believe it to be. I
iu sati. tied that the number killed is noi
mi the uciial proportion to the wounded.—
Jhi is owing, doubtless, to the protection
a Horded bv the trees.
0 P. M.
1 lie enemy ventured so far this afternoon
as to send out a cavalry regiment a short
distance in the direction of our lines, Gen.
Ereckinridgc set the Texas Rangers and
Forrest and his mounted men after them,
who captured about fifty prisoners, and
chased the remainder back and through two
regiments of infantry that had come along
to support, them. In the confusion that
ensued among the Federals, they fired upon
their own cavalry, and wounded and killed
a number of them. Col. Forrest received a
shot in the side, which passed around near
the spine, making rather an ugly wound.—
It is not thought to he mortal, however.—
The entire Federal force engaged immedi
ately fell back in evident disorder.
It would be permaturc at this time to in
dulge in speculations upon the results of the
two days’ battle, out of which we have just
emerged. I may be permitted to say, how
ever, that the effect upon the Confederates
has been to inspire them with fresh confi
dence and renewed determination. They
have felt of the enemy, and have themselves
passed through the fire, and will be the bet
ter prepared for a second great battle which
come off at or near Corinth.
I am not informed as to the extent of the
reinforcements which the enemy has re
ceived, or of his ability to undertake an eay-
Jv forward movement. He has been baaly
' lippled and cut up, and has lost much val
uable property, and many of his best field
pieces. Moreover, the roads are in •* shock
ing condition. It rained very hard last ni«ht
uu :, 2 a . m to-day, and there is a prospect o of
mmv rain to-night. All these things will
t' Uw to delay lurther active operations by
cither party. j> » *
Fitflilal Son 411 Mill*, c*.
We ave indebted ta a gentleman in Ports
mouth for the subjoined account of the tight
at South Mills, N. C., on Saturday last.—
We learn from si passenger that Capt. Me-
Couias of Henningscu’s Artillery, who was
killed in th•iiglit, fought with the most de
termined loaven . cheering his men on and
exposing hiuiself with apparent indifference
to danger :
I'outs mouth, April l‘l.
I have just seen an intelligent member of
r : Wright's*od Georgia Ilegiment, who
wouuded in the battle at South Mills,
m l I will give you a hurried sketch of his
ate incut concerning the light. Three mi
'■ ’ll deserted to the "\ anlceos and gave
■ ofonnati- nos our numbers, situation, Ac.
They landed Friday night large forces and
cunmenced the march. Col. Wright failed
to get information of the advance until Sat
urday morning. He then hurried forward
with three companies of infantry, an artillery,
company, and one cavalry company, notch
ing a very large old field, skirted by woods,
he sent some men and burnt the houses des
troyed the feuces, Ac. The enemy variously
estimated at from 5,000 to 8,000 soon ap
proached uuconscious of the force awaiting
them.
As soon as they came within long range,
the artillery opened with terrible effect upon
them, and after silencing their battery our
guns ceased tiring, that we might induce
them to charge. Thinking that our battry
was disabled, they made a furious charge,
not knowing that there were infantrymen
waiting to receive them. When about 250
r ods trom us, our men were ordered to lire,
and after tiring about tifteeu rounds, loading
on the ground and rising on the knee to firi\
the enemy fled off to the right and broke for
the woods.
Col. A\ right, fearing a flank movement,
and not having the wagon containing this
amunition, retired in good order to our en
trenchments. We hoar that the enemy have*
now retreated to their gunboats. Reinforce
ments have been sent to Col. Wright. IL>
and his men fought with the most determined,
courage. Od our side the loss was front
l ight to twelve killed, and about thirty
wounded. The enemy’s loss is estimated afcj
trom Ji/0 to 500. All ot our wounded were{
brought off the field but Lieut. Wilson.
