Heroic Incident in Hfew Orleans.
Wo are indebted to high authority for the
uet« of tho following occurrence in New Or-;
lean?, intelligence of which reached the eity
ce?terdav. Mrs, H. M. Hyams, wife of the
Ldicuten&nt Governor of the State, passed on
rhe ptrect a number of Yankee officers were
it ting in a doorway a* she went by. One
■ t them arose and followed her a few steps,
and arresting her progress by placing him
self in front of her, that she had omitted to
how in pa-dug. She attempted to avoid the
ruffian, when h< repeated his remark, and
her if she had not read Gen. Butler’s
“Order No. 28” with reference to the treat*
inent of Union officers and soldiers with res
pect. Endeavoring to pass the fellow, he
threw his arm round the lady’s wniot, prc>s
ed his foul lips upon her face. As the vil-
Imn released her from his embrace, the South
ern lady oooly drew a pistol and shot him
through the hndy. so that he fell dead at her
l*et iu the insolent Hush of his cowardly
triumph over the insulted virtue of a feeble
unprotected woman.
Another of the officers immediately arose
and approaching the nohle and courage mu
lady took her by the arm and told her, so
that the other Kederals could hear, that he
accompany him before tlen. Butler.—
He immediately placed her in a cab and
drove off—but not to the Beast » quarters.
He directed the cub out of the city and
through the line of sentries—and further on
-till, until beyond the reach of the tyrant’s
outposts. The act of the heroine had made
a hero of the witness. He told her that he
considered her act justifiable and noble, and
that iu a moment he bad determined that
•he should not. be sacrificed to Butler's ven
geance, and adopted the expedient by which
he had rescued her. He continued to es
cort her on her journey through the country
until they arrived in the Southern line at
t atnp Moore, when he delivered hitt'elf up
to Confederate authorities, to be dealt with
as a prisoner or otherwise.
So enda this heroic and dramatic incident
of the war. Mrs Hyaru? has BPt a lofty ex
atwple for the Southern women, and th gnl
bvnt gentleman who delivered her has sham
ed its army and the whole North. Wo trust
he ha? renounced foresaw- the service of the
oppressors, 3ud that a rank equivalent to
hi? deserts may reward him in ours.— Mobil?

CttmtS'g Green (John. —The following is
the Indiana method by which they treat
£re°n corn for making succotash, &c\ during
the winter. AVhen the green corn is fit for
use, a pi' is dug from two to three feet in
diameter at top and gradually enlarging at
the battom. say five feet down, fre-in six to
eight feet In diameter. A large fire is then
built near by, on which stones are heated,
and. when red hot, the stones and live coals
-ire -hoveled into the bottom of the pit, and
nprinkied over with tine loose din. The
corn is then thrown in with husks on, jn?t
s? it is pulled from the stalk, until the pit,
is nearly full. Then come? a thin laver of
looxr* dirt, (hcTi Ijr-t- ..1 i <.c> o
the pit) and the whole covered with earth to
retain the beat. When tho whole cook off
. which in' .several days) the pit is opened
ind the corn is found to he mod delightfully
cooked. AVhen cool, the bu-k are stripped
off and the corn dried in the sun ; when
thoroughly dried, tho corn is shelled easily,
and is then packed a wav in bags for use.-

Brutality. — Evidences of the brutal pro
ceedings of the Yankees in Culpepper coun
ty, accumulate daily. The latest: ease report
ed is that, of Miss HJ!a .Slaughter, an acconi- 1
pushed voting lady, who was grossly insnlr
ed by u soldier, when she drew a pistol and
c mmanded him to leave her presence. The
ruffian immediately took his departure but
s.son afterward returned with an officer and
a tile of men who arrested Miss S. and im.
prisoned her in the county jail, where she
remained at last accounts subjected to the
fare and treatment of the most hardened i
criminal. The high handed deeds of Butler
in New Orleans will hardly bear compari
son with the atrocities of Pope and his men
in Northern Virginia.
Georgia in the Field.—The Adjutant
General ut Biohmond and the inspector
General of Georgia have compared notes,
and it i« officially ascertained that Georgia!
has in the Confederate service 69 regiments
of infantry. 4 regiments of cavalry, 2 le- j
gions, consisting of cavalry, infantry and
artillery ; 14 independent battalions* of ar
tillery and infantry ; 6 independent com
panies, and a number of pnrti-an corps ol
which no account Ins boon stated. Sottfb

ReCwjecs from
A great many young men, says the “Ex
aminer” of the 15th, arc daily arriving in •
this city from Baltimore. They represent
that oty a ? under a reign of terror. The i
draft baa spread utter consternation among
all classes. Southern sj. mpathizera arc, of
course, filled with horror by the prospect of
being forced into the ranks; the Unionists*
who havo been clamouring for a vigorous
prosecution of the war are casting about how
to evade the draft and save thejr persons.
Tur. Enemy on James River. —We
could learn nothing of the movements of the
♦‘nemy on James Kiver yesterday. Two of
the enemy’s gunboats proceeded up James
River ’Wednesday, and shelled Malvern Hill
furiously from one to two o’clock, P. M.
The firing was very rapid, averaging a gun
to the xnioute, but we have been unable to '
hear the result.— P?ter-hvjrt Express,
