Ret. E. A. Bollex, Agent B. 8. of C. S. A. —
Deal Sir I gratefully acknowledge the honor
conferred upon me hy a portion of (Jodx people,
t*y constituting me a Life Director of the Bible
Society of the Confederate States America.
It is a cause in which 1 feel a deep interest, ami
mv earnest prater is that God will make this in
bint Bible Society, not only of giving His blessed
word to out own people, but of sending it freely
to the remotest nations ut the earth.
Inclosed is a check lor slso. Please acknowl
edge its reception, and believe me to.
Very truly,
out friend and toother in t'hrist,
T. J. JAt'KSON.
“ Personne,” the enter raining correspondent of
the ty'harlesion tCourier, devotes an entire letter
iu a late issue to the general subject of religious
teachings, services and influences in the camps;
remarks that Gen. Polk is a Bishop, Pendleton a
clergyman, Hill a religious author, and Jackson a
dignitary of '■ church ; that all these men have
been eininenUv yiiccesstul in whatever they hnve
undertaken . have paassed unharmed through the
dangers that have environed them, and are living
illuHtra ions of the truth that a fighting Christian
is as terrible to his enemies as he is gentle to his
friends. »>f Gen. Jackson, especially, he says :
Gen. Jackson never enters a light without, first
invoking God’s blessing and protection. The dp—
pee ii*- nee of this strange man upon the Deitr seems
never to be absent from his mind, and whatever
he does or says, it. is alwava prefaced fry “ God’s
blessing.”
In one of his official dispatches, he commences
“ By God’s Blessing, we have to day defeated
the enemy.” Said one of his officers to him the
utlier day—“ Well, General, another candidate
(referring to Pope.) is waiting your attentions.”—
*'So I ohsorve, ” was the ipriet reply, “and hv
‘God’s blessing’ fie shall receive them to his full
s»t isfaet ion.”
After a battle lias been fought the same rigid
remembrance of Divine Power is observed. The
army is drawn up in line, the General dismounts
from his horse, and there in the presence ol his
rough, bronze-lace troops, with heads uncovered
and bent awe-stricken to the ground, the voice of
the good man, which but a few hours before was
ringing out in quick and fiery intonations, is now
heard subdued and calm, as if overcome by the
presence of the Supreme Being, in holy appeal to
the “sapphire throne.” Few such spectacles have
been witnessed in modern times, and it is needless
to add that few such examples have ever been told
with more wondrous power upon the hearts of
men. Are you surprised, after this recital, that
Stonewall Jackson is invincible, and that he can
lead his army to certain victory, whenever “ God’s
blessing’’ precedes the act *

Tlo- feeling among lire federal Prisoner*.
The following is one of the many petitions of the
same kind received fry Major Ryiander, in charge
of the Federal prisoners at Gamp Oglethorpe in
ihis place. We publish it, as illustrating the feel
rug among them, omitting the signatures, oj
course
Macon, lit., July 17th, 1862.
lion. Major Rylandkk:
Most respected Sir : We, having been prisou
eis now above five, months ; and having seen that
iLe Federal Government is not. disposed to make
one effort towaids our release, but on the contra
ry, is determined to hedge up our way completely
fry haughtily refusing to treat with the t'onfeder
ate States in reference thereto—fry refusing to re
ceive those prisoners whom yon have magnani
mously paroled and sent forward ; and again, !>v
turning a deaf ear to our own petitions, thereby
proving to us that we are doomeu victims to the
pride of a few men w ho seem determined to crush
the file blood out of those who have unfortunately
helped them to power.
Having destroyed om health, broken down our
constitutions, fry hardships and exposure in the
army, and by change of climate and water, mode
of living, Ac., since we have Keen prisoners, and
h iving families and friends dependent upon us,
some of whom are now suffering, we fear, and be
lieving, as we do, that you would be happy to re
lease us—therefore we solemnly pledge our most
sue red word and honor that we will never aid, as
sisr or alter, fry bearing arms or otherwise, directly
ur indirectly, the enemies of the Gonfederate
States of America, during this war, as we are de
termined never again to bear a part in a war in
which such measures have to be adopted and such
mj fiering endured for such a cause.
We are dm -a to these conclusions from the
tacts herein stated, unaided by any suffering we
have endured since we have been prisoners, hav
ing no caese to complain ol the treatment we have
received from those who have had charge of us,as
utrr condition has been as good as could be, under
your kind and gentlemanly rule. And permit us
here to state that we would he pained to part with
our present commander—except for the purpose
of going home.
W e humbly crave your protection to your lines
ut some accessible points in Tennessee or else
where, most practicable with you, and we will
make our way home from thence on our own ac
count, Ae., and we will ever remain grateful sub
jects of your kindness and magnimitv.
We further propose to stand pledged to each
other for the faithful observence of the proposi
tions herein made and obligations herein taken bv
each of US.
Sir, we have the honor to be
y our very obedient servants.
