“On Saturday night an immense crowd j
a»«embled at the theatre. All that part of;
the auditorium set apart for white people
was crowded fit an early hour, so that stand-!
ing room could scarcely he obtained, when 1
a number of privates of the 10th Ohio oc
cupied the negro gallery. Before the first \
act was over, that part of the house also be
came crowded ; and, at. the fall of the cur
tin, some of the negroes left their seats and ,
were passing through the erowd, when the
sqldifrs seized them and knocked them
down. In ten minutes every negro had
been badly beaten and ejected from the
house, some of them being thrown down the
stairs, from the top to the bottom. As the
la>r one disappeared, quietness wa« again j
restored. No alarm was visible in the lower
part of the house, and when the band had
finished their do r form an cos, the eurtin rose,
and the play proceeded without interruption.
Leaving the theatre, several members of
