i'r*>in (lie Yazoo Pass.
From a gentleman just from Grenada we
learn that the Federal fleet in Yazoo Pass
had reached Greenwood, on the Tallahatchie,
and encountered our force stationed at that
point, on Wednesday last. The fleets con
sist ot nineteen transports, six gunboats,
and one commissary boat, and a force of
about i . n thousand, men. Gei. Loring
wa*«in command of our forces, and General
TiJghmau was ordered up to bis assistance.
The lighting continued all day Wednesday,
the tiring being distinctly heard at Yaldeu
Station, on the Mississippi Central Railroad.
So fears was entertained by our military of
their ability to check the further advance
of the enemy, as we have ample prepara
tions to meet him.
'J he obstructions have very little influ
ence on the progress of the Yankees. They
carry with them machinery that cuts down
the piers below the water with a rapidity
that is amazing. While the boats are at
this work infantry is thrown in the front and
r< :tr to keep off the guerillas, and thus they
proceed without molestation.
The Jackson papers of the 12th instant
publish the following on this subject :
Au intelligent geutlemau from Grenada
yesterday, states that it was reported that
the Yankee force were to attack Greenwood
yesterday. Greenwood landing lie sin Car
roll county, abuut thirty miles southwest b)
west from Grenada, and we think still near
er Yalden, on the Mississippi Central Rail
road. The enemy brought two gunboats
and fifteen transports laden with troops to
that point, where General Coring commands
the Confederate troops, in what force we arc
not. advised. Gen. Tilghman’s brigade is
at Grenada] There are some State troops
at Vulden, and probably a small force of
Confederates. There was, we believe, a
regiment stationed there some weeks ago. —
Some uneasiness is exhibited by our citizens
ii the line of road, but whether with good
reason we are unable to say. It is more
probable that the Y r aukee forces are heavy
—it would appear so from tho number of
fin .sports, they have, and it is not at all
pr bable they would venture to flank us
without an efficient number. The safety ot
mis region now depends upon Gen. Curing's
Mr cess.— AliiMsxippian.

A few tl « ys since we published a short ac
count of au explosion which took ulnce in
One of the buildings of the cartridge inarm
factory o' Brown’s island, near Richmond,
involving a serious loss of life and wounding
ot i number of operatives. At the time of
t disaster there were employed in the room

i! i, Recording to the best information we
obtain from those connected with the

t ire, is situated on the southside of the Is
-1 md, aud divided into two apartments. The
f tree of the explosion demolished about fifty
f et of the house, the sides being blown out
and the roof falling ; yet the report was not
very heavy. A perfect panic ensued, espec
ially atm ng the females employed in vari
ous portions df the Labratory, and all work
was suspended for the day. .Several girls
wore taken from the ruins dead. The
names of these victims will be made known
a soon as an accurate list can be obtained.
Among .the badly wounded are the llev.
John 11. Woodstock, a well known citizen
of Richmond, and Mr. McCarthy, who wore
ai ting in the capacity of superintendents in
the room where the explosion occurred. A
large number of ambulances and wagons
were procured as soou as possible, and the
sufferers having been carefully wrapped in
cotton, wore conveyed away one by one.—
The dead bodies were terribly disfigured, bo
that identification in somo instance was very
difficult. The Scene which followed the ex
plosion was appalling beyond description.—
The agonizing groans of the wounded,
ami shrieks of women who sought, but fear
ed to find, their children among the black
ened forms which lay round, could not be
heard with indifference, even by the most
callous. The number of killed, according
to the estimate of the officers at the Labora
tory, made soon after the explosion, is fif
teen, and the wounded from twenty to thir
ty. The loss of property is comparatively
small. The room, which was used for
breaking up small arms cartridges, con
tained but little ammunition, so that the
effect <if the explosion did not even commu
nicate to the adjoining room. The precise
cause of the disaster is not yet ascertained.
