The Way the Money Goes.
BY JOHN O. SAXE.
How goes the money ? Well,
I’m sure it iwn’t hard to tell;
It goes for rent and water rates,
For bread and butter, coal and grates,
Hats, caps and ear|x*ts, hoops and hose,
And that’s the way the money goes.
How goes the money ? N a .
Don’t everyl>ody know the way .
It goes for bonnets, coats and capes,
Bilks, satins, muslins, velvets, crapes,
Hkawls, ribbons, furbelows,
And that’s the way the money goes.
How goes the money ? Bure,
I wish the ways were somewhat fewer!
It goes for wages, taxes, debts,
It goes for presents, goes for bets,
For paints, pomade and eau de rone ;
And that’s the way the money goes,
How goes the money? Now,
I’ve scarce begun to mention how ;
It goes for feathers, laces, rings,;
Toys, dolls, and other baby things,
Whips, whistles, candies, bolts and bows;
And that’s the way the money goes.
How goes the money? Come,
I know it does not go for rum ;
It goes for school and Sabbath chimes,
It goes for charily sometimes,
For missions and such things as those,
And that’s the way the money goes.
How goes the money ? There,
I'm out of patience, I declare !
It goes for plays and diamond pins,
For public alms and private sins,
For hollow shams and silly shows;
And that's the way the money goes.
The Cotton Crop of Monroe County
for 1806.
From tin* Examiner.l
Listening to the mounful plaint “ruin
ed, making nothing.” "gone to the dogs,”
etc., from day to day, from week to week,
from month to month, the credulous and
min fleeting are apt to absorb the sad sto
ry, and echo it, and idd unwillingly, in
sustaining an erroneous idea that is calcu
lated tti add to the general depression that
was born in the South when the cause of
the South expired, and is injuring our
credit, at home and abroad.
What are the facts iu the case? Mon
roe county to be sure cannot be taken as a
fair criterion of tbe South or of the State,
hut it is m the immediately prosperity of
Monroe county that w e are concerned, and
it is to Monroe county that we propose de
voting our article tins morning.
Monroe county produced in 1 Kiln, about
10,(KH) bales of cotton which at $45 00 per
halo, which is a fair average taking all
grades into consideration, yielded $1,800,-
000, if sold to lie delivered to the steamers
at our wharf, or at the nearest railroads
dejiots.
The crop of cotton for Monroe county
this year cannot fall under 10,000 hales,
and is reasonably estimated at 12,000, and
by many at a much higher figure; hut let
us assume 11,000 for the sake of argument;
this will bring, delivered as above stated,
$1,060,000 iu currency to our planters,
leaving the tax of three cents per pound to
lie paid by the purchasers. Now, when we
remember the tremendous proportions of
the proceeds, of the cotton crop before the
war, that was invested in negroes, and
found its way to Kentucky, Virginia, Mis
suori, Maryland and North Carolina, to
he invested in the aforesaid chattlei , we
may reasonably expect that there will be
more money' (specie standard) in the coun
try after the crop of 1800 is sold seeking in
vestmeut than at any previous period of
our history.
Now there are tti the county of Mon
roe, as per census return for 1800, 11,210
negroes. If we assume that 4,210 df these
negroes are too old or too young for plan
tation service, or are not so employed as to
he entitled to wages, which, our readers
will agree with us, is a most liberal allow -
ance, It will leave 7,000 whose wages will
directly or indirectly be drawn from the
proceeds of cotton sales, which, at an av
erage of SIOO per year, per hand, will
amount to $700,000 to be circulated by the
negroes among our merchants and people
generally, that in other years would have
been sent to different States, to be invest
ed in the purchase of hands whose labors
would have amassed yet other funds to be
thus Invested, and the same routine would
have continued as long as occupation
could have been found for new purchasers.
And tbe planter w lio at first purchased
his little stock of provisions for ten labor
ers from our local dealers, would, when
his force became large enough to Justify
it, havegone into the city markets through
his commission merchants, and though
increasing his mi in her of laborers and
acres au hundred-fold, have benefitted his
own county in no way save through the
tax gatherer.
From the figures we have given which
»re few anti iun<le<|Uate, ami t<> which our
readers may add largely, it is apparent
that putting the crop of cotton down to a
much lower estimate than can reasonably
be made, more money will be placed in
healthy circulation in our midst when
the sales are over, than in any previous
year since the hand of industry ami pro
gress was raised to dispute the claims of
nature to our broad productive acres.
No Mokk Circulating National

New York and n he Southern Trade.
—A New York letter of Saturday last says:
The dry goods merchants are doing a
great deal of grumbling just now. Trade,
they say, is seriously slow, and what is
more, the letters they receive from South
ern customers to whom they sold goods on
credit early in the season hold out but lit
tle hope that they will be able to get their
money without au extension of time.
Meanwhile stocks of goods are accumula
ting here, and prices are looking down.
This morning one house sold 200 cases of
