r -JU MEMOEIAM.
Prentice of the Louiaville Journal, thus
speaks of the following beautiful line* :
••One might almost wish to die, If he
knew that so beautiful a tribute a* this
would lm written to his memory.”
On the bosom of the river
Where the sun unloosed his quiver,
Where the star-light streamed forever,
Hailed a vessel light and free.
Morning like manna
On the bright folds of her banner,
While the zephyrs rose to fan her
Koftly to the r*c ant sea.
At her prow a pilot earning
In the flush 6f you'ijj stood dreaming,
And he was in glorious seeming,
Like an angel from above ;
Through his hair the breezes sported,
And as on the wave he floated
Off that pilot, angel throated,
Warbled lays of hope and love.
Through those locks so brightly flowing,
Buds of laurel bloom were blowing,
• And his hands anon were throwing
Music from a lyre of gold.
Swiftly down the stream he glided,
Softly the purple wavc3 divided,
And a rainbow arch abided
On his canvas’ snowy fold.
Ar.xious hearts jyith fond devotion,
Watched him Killing U> the ocean,
Prayed that no wild commotion
’Midst the elements might rise.
And he seemed some young Apollo,
< harming summer winds to follow,
While the water-flags corolla
Trembled to his music Bighs.
But these purple wave* enchanted,
Rolled beside a city haunted
By an awful spell, that daunted
Every comer to her shore.
Nightshades rank the air encumbered,
And pale marble statues numbered,
Awoke to life no more.
Then there rushed with lightning quick
ness,
O’er his fa«'e a mortal sickness,
And the dews in fearful thickness
(jiathered o’er his temples fair,
And there swept a dying murmur
Through the lovely Southern summer
As the beauteous pilot comer
Relished by that city there.
Still rolls ou that radiant river,
And the sun unbinds his quiver
O’er the star-light streams forever
Ou its bosom as before.
But that vessel’s rainbow banner
Greets no more the gay savanna
And that pilot’s lute drops manna
On the purple waves no more.
African Exploration.
Although the French colony in Senegal
has done nothing to repay the mother
country for the sacrifices it has cost, the
government is determined, if possible, to
make it the seat of an extensive commerce
with the interior, Much encouragement
has been given French explorers in push
ing their researches. A Paris correspond
ent of the London News says:
The mysteries of the African deserts
have alwaye had singular attractions for
enterprising travelers. On the north
coast, from Morocco to Egypt, the traces
of extinct, but not forgotton civilization to
be followed; in tbe interior, those un
known highlands of whose production
and population we even now have only’ a
faint idea. But in the list of those whose
love of science or adventure has carried
them into the inhospitable desert,’ there
tire found comparatively few French
names. Yet France has a colony in Sene
gal, which has always been the object of
more interest than most of her other colo
nies, but which as vet, notwithstanding
the possessio A of Algeria, >ohlt>h might
until' ally have led 10 a greater display of
enterprise, it lias done notlyng to repay
the mother country for the sacrifices it
lias cost. Now, however, the French
Government lias determined to make it, if
possible, the seat of an extensive com
merce with the interior, and of late years
countries lying further inwards, which
are destined to become one day, if the
plans of government be successful, the
tributaries of French trade.
Two of these explorers, Lieutenant
Mnye and M. Quintin, surgeon of the
imperial marine, have recently returned
from a three years’journey, the object of
which was to visit the so-called prophet
Jiudj Omar El Agui, with whom the
French Government liasa treaty of friend
ship. They rebelled the town of Regou,
on the Upper Niger, but here their prog
ress was arrested by a son of the prophet,
who has established his authority In this
place. Here they were detained for two
years, unable either to advance or to re
turn, but not exposed to other hardshhipe
than the climate and the want of all the
necessaries of civilized life. These years
were well spent, for during this time they
formed extensive collections, which, when
at last the Emir of Segou allowed them to
depart, they were fortunate enough to be
able to bring with them. They were pre
sonted to the Geographical Society at its
recent meeting, and gave an interesting
account of their expedition.
At the same sitting a subscription was
opened for the unfliest sum of £6OO, to ena
ble a young sub lieutenant, M. Le Saint,
to attempt the exploration of Central Afri
ca, eontmeueiug at Khartoum. He is a
pupil of M. Artoine d’ Abbadie, the well
known Abyssinian traveler and polemist.

Important to Brewers.— The Com
missioner of Internal Revenue has called
ti e attention of the revenue officers to the
fact that the law requiring the monthly
returns from brewers, since the use of
stamps Ims Wen adopted for the payment
oi the tax, must he so administered that
the stamps will W a protection additional
to those afforded by the old law, and not
merely a substitute. He states : “To this
end a monthly return should be insisted
ii]>on, and the same care should be taken
as under the former law to ascertain its
correctness. The number of sumps pur
chased by the brewer during any month
should he ascerUined from the collector,
and if insufficient for the payment of the
tax ui>on the quantity brewed and remov
ed, an immediate investigation should be
had.”
