THE
We hope our readers have all read and
digisted the last State paper that Andrew
Johnson will have an opportunity of sub
mitting to the American people. It is
characterised by ail the terseness in state
tneut, vigor of logic, and earnestness of
tone that have marked his messages. It
earn not be read without the conviction
that whatever faults Mr. Johnson may
have developed in his administration of
our natioual all'ahv, lie is, and has always
been, adevoted friend to the Constitution,
and to a true and just Union of the tMales.
He has shown a bigheaded obstinacy and
perverseness at times, and has often
jeopardized the life of the country by bis
siotii or timidity, but never, in a single
instance, bus bis love for his country
slept. His loyalty to the old Constitution
and the old Union, has been above re
proach, judged by the standard of those
with whom lie ms been associated. We
honor him for it, uud shall always hold
him jii grateful remembiauee as a friend
who spare i not himself in his efforts to
shield us. lie will go out of
the respect of every honest man *m*t!ie
land, for this quality, at least. ...
Home points in his es
pecial attention. His views of reconstruc
tion are too well kuown and too strongly
stated to need comment. They are the
sentimeutsof every patriot in the country,
and will one day be triumphantly vindi
cated.
His plan for paying the national debt j
will command the most earnest attention
and provoke very general and spirited !
comment. He puts himself at the head j
of the powerful party who favor repudia- j
tion. His proposition to apply the six per !
cent, interest now paid the bondholders j
in gold, by the Government, to the reduc- ;
tion of the principal, is a novel one, and
will find many adherents. It will, as lie
demonstrates, pay the whole debt in six
teen years and eight months, ami, as he
assumes, and correctly, too, the bondhold
ers have already received upon their
securities a larger amount than their
original investment, measured by a gold
standard, and the question of injustice to
them is effectually disposed of We pre
dict for this startling proposition a wide
canvass, and, we should not be astonished,
ultimate adoption. It is the salient point
in the message. His other recommenda
tions are only incident to it. Taken in
connection with his startling expose of
Radical profligacy ami corruption, as
shown in the expenses of tiie Government
under their rule, as compared with the
total expenses incurred since its founda
tion, and while under other auspices, it
cannot fail to rouse a deep feeling in the
national heart.
His suggestions with reference to the
election of Senators by the people, and
t he limitation of the terms of office of Ked
i nil Judges are sad blemishes upon what
otherwise would be almost without fault.
They are the utterances of a demagogue,
and not of a patriot or statesman, and de
serve, ami we trust will receive, the un
stinted condemnation of the intelligent
public sentiment of the country. They
can be inspired, it seems to us, by no spirit
save that in which Radicalism moves and
has its being, and in the present condition
of theeountry.with suftVagecbeapened ami
debauched as it is, and amid lHe general
demoralization now prevailing, would be
followed by the most ruinous conse
quences. The lirst would he a violation of
the fundamental theory of our Govern-*
merit, and in that aspect, alone, would
convict Mr. Johnson of entertaining sen
timents, and favoring innovations he so
earnestly denounces in others. He adds
nothing to his reputation by entertaining,
much less making them subject matter
for argument in the last appeal he will
make to ids fellow-citizens of the Union.

Kirk in Butts Cousty. — We learn that
the gin-house and packing screw of (’apt.
Jesse Cleveland, near Indian Spring,
Butts county, was totally consumed by
tire on Tu -day evening last. Fortunate
ly, most of the cotton already ginned had
been removed. Three bales ready for mar
ket were saved, but slightly damaged. A
large quality of seed, about six thousand
pounds of seed cotton, together with all
the machinery, etc., were lost. '1 lie evi
dences of the casualty having been the
work of incendiarism are conclusive. Loss
from $1,500 to $2,000. Mr. U. is a son-in
law of our townsman, Cos!. K. W. Collier.
Another Victim to Negro Malice.—
Frederick Briekman, who was wounded
in the abdomin and groin, in the attack
upon the special police force on Thunder
bolt road last Saturday night by an organ
ized gang of negro murderers, died from
tiie efleets of his wounds yesterday. He
had suffered very much, and while he liv
ed had to tie kept under the influence of
morphine a considerable portion of tiie
time. Mr. Briekman resided upon the
same place as the late Mr. Broadbacker,
ami assisted in cultivating tire extensive
vegetable garden of tiie latter. lie was
a native of Germany, and a thrifty, indus
triom farmer; was upwards of forty years
of age, and leaves a wife and family. His
funeral will take place at three o’clock
this afternoon. ■ Savannah Xetvn, nil.
