“ WPBt'IXATIVE OPmOJH."
The TcU-f/raph , of yesterday, charges us
with misapply >nga “speculativeopinion”
it had advanced with reference to the rea
son why the Southern people loved and
stood by their leaders, civil and military,
during the recent civil war. If we have
done so, wc beg pardon, but we do not
feel that we have. Any way, we are will
ing to risk a public verdict upon the ques
tion.
Our cotempory said, as plainly as words
allowed him, that it was only because of
the rigorous and proscriptive policy adop
ted by Congress, that these leaders were
not ostracised and punished by theHouth
ern people; which meant, if it meant any
thing, that these leaders had no merit of
their own; that the South did not love
them for what they had done and dared in
its defence and the defence of principle;
in a word, only because we were mad and
piqued at unjust treatment. We held, and
still bold, that this was a false and very
unjust estimate of the motives upon which
the representative people of the South
acted, and that to grant its correctness
would he to slander them most grossly.
So thinking we said, and we staud by it.
it doe-not dull the point of the barb,
either, to say that this charge was merely
in the nature of a “speculative opinion,”
and of little “practical importance.” The
good name of a people, like that of an
individual, is both a very practical and
very important thing—as any man or na
tion who bus had the misfortune to lose it,
will testify. If in a mixed crowd theedi
tor of the Telegraph should indulge in a
“ speculative opinion” of any given man’s
honesty or fair dealing, to the effect that
the only reason he didn’t cheat orswindle
was because he feared the law, we hardly
think the person so “speculated” about
would find much comfort in the fact that
it was only a "speculation.” That sort of
an apology would hardly answer to one
who resented a reflection upon his fair
fame. Men have lost their lives for much
less—which was a very practical and a
very important matter to them. We
hope our amiable cotemporary may not
have the misfortune to realize this fact in
any “speculative opinions” he may ad
vance about individuals.
GEORGIA.
Otircase at Washington has not yet come
to triul It will not be called, perhaps, till
after the holiday recess, which ends Jan
uary sth. We know little, and care less,
what Radical meanness will do. We think
the negroes will be thrust back into the
Legislature, anyhow, and after that as lit
tle done as possible, so as to save the con
spirators from theseaudal of going through
a repetition of the loathsome ceremony of
legitimatizing the bastard called “re-con
struction.”
Come fair or foul weather, though, let
their do he as bad as bad can be, or only
mediocre in its malice, we must drive
ahead in ttie furrow we have made so
broad and deep, and with such good to
ourselves this past year. We need not
bother much about politics, now. When we
have occasion, we can make the status of
the State just what we please. That is set
tled. Our game, now, is to get money, and
in getting money to dig deep the founda
tions of a future all under our control, no
matter from what standpoint seen. We
must make 1800 show even a better bal
ance than 1808, in agricultural anti me
chanical affairs. As we put money in our
purse, the yoke will be gradually lifted.
Wh o the cowards who now oppress us
see our prosperity they will resume the
rote Os tl<—.A.'*..- it ......... »
“you rebel.” Then it will be “my dear
sir,” “my good friend.”
SMIGRATIOY TO RADICALIZE THE HOI Til.
Hie New York Tribune, which views
everything through partisan spectacles,
and approves or condemns according as it
may advance the interests of the Radical
party, advocates emigration of Republi
cans to the South in order to form a union
with the negroes, and, thus combined, to
make war upon the opinions and interests
of the Southern whites. This is the sort
of people—political emissaries—that it
would send out, and yet is ever ready to
complain that Northern people are not
taken by the hand and eordially wel
comed. We extract from a recent issue of
that paper:
It is necessary to tile stability and peace of the
country that Northern etui "ration into the South
shall he undertaken on a scale as national and im
posing a- the Northern invasion of the South by
hostile armies during the rebellion There arc in
all these States strongly Republican counties,
w hich need ouly a few Nort tern white men to or
ganize the colored vote and maintain loyal ascend
ency throughout entire districts which otherwise
must he abandoned to rebel and reactionary as
cendency. One county in Georgia, for instance,
east only 5S votes for Grant, though it had 1.500
colored voters. There was hut one white Repub
tho county, au(7 fie czueil not to emhirc
the dangers of a canvass. A few Northern com
munities in each county, sufficient to organize
churches and schools, stores and mills, and to in
troduce Northern newspapers, would suffice to
sustain the loyal sentiment in every such county.
"We need 3.000 Northern voters and workers in
Florida, 4,000 in South Carolina, .'>,ooo each in Al
abama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana, and
l,Uoo each in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia
and Texas. If an immigration like that which
pours Westward could flow into the South for one
year only, the southern States would he delivered
front the nightmare which now oppresses their
politics and industry. Who will organize and un
dertake the w ork ?
Taking a Lillie Exercise.
Yesterday morning being raw ami cold, a couple
of young men, for the purpose we suppose of exer
cise or getting up a circulation, got into a bit of a
rucuß on the corner of Cherry »ml Second streets.
The difficulty originated in a resident of Jones
county insinuating that the city gent was a “badly
mistaken no such thing.”
'Hus tile city boy couldn't, altogether relish,
and proceeded to throw himself in a lighting atti
tude. Jones county attempted to join battle with
a pistol, but proved a poor “joiner,” for he was
knock-. and ' ‘J> ikotjUny ”by the young .MaconHe Dot
lesson in ground tumbling being repeated some
five or six times before an officer arrived upon the
scene of action, and put an end to the skrimage.
Officer Foster, attempted to disarm Jones coun
ty, iu wresting the pistol from his grasp, the
cock came down between the linger and thumb of
the former, causing a painful wound.
After being taken to the Municipal Hall, Jones
county, having failed in coming out victorious in a
liglrt. concluded to try his powers in a foot-race
and broke tike a quarter-horse, having in his mind
no doubt, the old distich:
“He that fights and runs away.
Will live to light another day.”
But, here again Jones came to grief, for Officer
Henry Daniels quickly overhauled him and
Lroii<jht biua back triumphantly.
With battered countenance ami bleeding band,
poor Jonas county was further damaged by the
Mayor to the extent of s‘23 fine and costs for com
mitting the “overt act.” in calling a gentleman
anything but a “Pet name,” amt then attempting
to shoot hiiu for resenting It. It proved a bad in
vestment of cotton money.

The editor of the Colutubus Enquirer
finds food for congratulation in the recent
railroad stock sale at Bavaunah. We
hardly think, though, that cotton shippers
at Eufaula, aud other points on the river
who prefer to ship East, will echo it.
They have had flush times with low
freights, lately, but with an end of com
petition, may come an end of low freights.
The Enquirer says :
Should this purchase have the effect of increasing
freights to the old ratcs.it will no doubt revive
tic declining commerce of our river by way of Ap
alachicola, and make the latter again u brisk busi
ness place. Apalachicola lias for two or three
years past been hardly known as a cotton port, aud
the maintenance of a tariff of cheap freights be
tween this city and Savannah would have resulted
in the permanent lot, of her former large export -
i ba ' lot ■. ,iul the "river men” will not be
alow to pen cm- their opportunity, should auv ma
terial change occur m the arrangements that have
been transferring the trade of Apalachicola to Sa

The proprietor of this celebtaird medicine justly

bear him testimony to the mitb ot ti e assertion, that
in no case whatever will it fail to cuie, if the directions
are strictly followed and carried out. In a great many
cases a single dose has been sufficient for a cure, and
whole families have been cored by a single bottle, with
a perfect restoration of tiie genera! health. It is,
however, prudent, and in erery ease more certain to
cure, if its use is coutiuued in smaller «fiSe« i„r a
