Our public school is doing an excellent
business. It is located in admirable

In a recent drive with a most agreea

vine on Judge Harris’ plantation called
’• Pomona” near this city. We have be
fore us the account of Sir Charles Lv.ll.
the great English geologut, of his visit
thither in ISM. illustrated by afine wood
eat. ” Twenty year, ago." say, Sir
Charles, - it lull no existence; but when
the tree* of tho forest were cut down
cracks three feet deep were caused by
tho suit’, heat in the day; and during
the rains, a sudden rush of water through
these cracks caused them to deepen, till
in twenty years a chasm no less than fifty-
five feet in depth, three hundred yards In
length and varying in width from twenty
to one hundred and eighty feet was the
feault." Since this eminent man of
science wrote the foregoing, the proceas
has gone steadily on. This might:
vine is now greater than ever, and is
derful to behold.
ting of Pomona reminds us of
.1. Harris, the eminent jurist
and accomplished gentleman who for so
many yean adorned the bench and bar
of Georgia. Increasing infirmities have
withdrawn him from active life. He is
seen occasionally taking an evening drive
on these fine autumnal day,; and his ac

bodily infirmity, occupies its powers in
reading and conversing with friends.
