from resting on a soft bottom, a fact
w ®*cb should arouse the sympathies of
all tender-hearted people.
The weight of the oyster, m it gradual*

and U soon oa it is covered with sediment
or mud, it dies. Mxny people suppose
that the oyster really eats, and kind-
hearted people, buying oyster* in the
shell, sometime* throw oorn meal over
them, thinking to feed them. The pecu
liar noise emanating from them has been
supposed to be produoed by feeding. All
shellfish at times have their shells open,
and when touched will instantly ^
them. The noise thas produced has been

Most of the Baltimore dealers in raw
oysters during the summer month*,
tfnnsact their bntinees at Fair Haven,
Connecticut, where large beds of Balti
more oyster* have been transplanted.
The bed* are so arranged that oa the re
ceding of the salt water tide, hush water
from a email stream covers the oyster* ;
it is said that this fattens oyster* better
than any other method. Order* are re-
omved for the article in question during
the summer months, and they are taken
from the beds and shipped with the
greatest possible dispatch, and many oat

the great importance of this interest to

A Strange Case.
A female cat, owned by the proprietor
of the Sparks Hotel, in Nicholasville.
Ky., recently brought a mixed family
into the world. She gave birth at one
and the some time to throe kittens and
to throe animals which, to all outward
appearance* ore common gray squirrels.
There? is nothing peculiar about the
voung members of the feline race, they
lieing pure-blooded cats. But the three
; youngsters which belong to the rod.-ntia
lamilv have toils like their mother, while
in all other points they are genuine
squirrels. It is stated that the female
cot formed an intimacy with a number
of the gray squirrels which frequented the
yard where she made her home, and
it is presumod that in a moment of in
tense desire she received the unnatural
We have not given a personal ex
amination to this freak of nature, but we
state the case on the authority of gentle
men who have made such examination,
and on whose words we rely. It certainly
is a singular cross, and doubtless will at
tract the serious attention of naturalists.
The case, in our opinion, does not come
under the head of what is known as the
vision theory. Something more than the
simple association of the cat with the
squirrel was required to effect the st-trt-
ling change in the embryo or fetus. And
yet the nature of tho squirrel is so widely
different from that of the cat as to give
rhkj to the thought that fruitful copula
tion could not take place between the
two.
Dishonored Father's Vengeance.
New Oklkanh, Octol**r 19. Caroline
Hughel, aged twenty-two years, from
Alsace, was killed by her father this
morning immediately after landing from
thu steamship Louisiana. They took
passage from Bordeaux, und tho father
asserts the daughter, through an in
timacy with a young Frenchman on hoard,
dishonored her family. He promised the
captain of the steamer not to molest his
daughter while on board, but soon after
landing he stubbed her twice with a knife
fatally.
The greatest herdsman in the world is
the title claimed for Samuel W. Allen, of
Texas, who owns 225,000 cattle. He has
one rancho 80 miles long and 40 wide be
tween the Nevada and Colorado rivers,
th© largest on the continent, which pas
tures 120,000. Two other* accommodate
respectively 70,000 and.35,000. These
cattle all subsist on native grasses of a
jiart of Texas. His herd* require
the attention of at least 400 herder*
and branders and the use of 3,000 horses.
He brands 60.000 calves every year to
keep up the supply. The value of his
stock exclusive of the laud exceeds five
million and a half. He is the chief meat
purveyor for New Orleans and the neigh
boring counties of the gulf coast.
