Hitherto we have had very little to say

On tbe Fair Creunen—Great Eastern
Menagerie and Circus—To-day the
Last.
The attendance upon this popular
amusement resort was even larger yes
terday than on the first day, and the sat
isfaction given by the three performances
was of the most exquisite character. At
ten and at two o’clock the immense
pov ill ions were densely packed with the
elite of the Fair Grounds, w o 1 hand
somely represented every part of the
State. It has never been the good for
tune of our people in this section to see
so complete, elaborate and gigantic an ex
hibition as the Great Eastern, and they
seem to keenly appreciate the fact.
One of the leading features of the
great show is the den of performing wild
Ixjaats by Mr. Henry Saunders, who is
an expert at that kind of perilous under
taking. He plays with a terrible Bengal
tiger, a jaguar, leopard and panther with
the gamo self-possession that he would
fondle an ordinary domestic canine. We
had an excellent position, from which we
watched him closely, and during the try
ing ordeal coaid not detect the trembling
of a single nerve. The ugly elephant—
an almost unmanageable pachiderm of
the African species—is ably manipulated
by Professor John Williams, an apt pupil
of the great Van Amburgh, of olden
memory.
The riding was even better than the
previous day, if possible. A good night’s
rest seemed to have infused new life into
the beaatifal horses, and equestriennes and
male riders vied with each other for the
mastery in startling feats of equitation.
The gymnastic exercises were brilliant
beyond description. The animals, always
attractive, never looked in better condi
tion, and so extensive a zoological selec
tion has not been presented here in our
memory. The entire mammoth combina
tion is not only recherche in every partic
ular, but is positively ne plus ultra in all
its excellent appointments. An exhibi-

The next is in a bolder mood, being a
storm piece, with a mother and child in
the foreground, evidently intent upon ca
mping tho fury of tho storm. The
clouds in the roar are so black and
boding that one almost fancies that he
cin hoar tho thunder. Tho entiro pieco
is full of awful beauty, and is excellent
in color and perspective. Tho next one
of the five is “ Cinderella ”—a capital
illustration of the famous nursery tale.
All these picturos evince a delicate hand
ling of color and a softness of tone which
mm very charming. There is no glare
ubont them, but a mellow brightness
which renders them very beautiful. We
judge from tho general effe -U in all the
pictures that they were painted by the

The most amusing thing in the room
is a set of illustrations of popular songs,
by Matt O’Brien, of Augusta. Few car

anything better or funnier.
Mr. J. A. Pugh, of this city, wishing to
give artists from abroad all tho advan

It is one thing to bring out an inven
tion and puff it into brief notoriety by
Lavish expenditure of money, and quite
another to build a solid reputation on in
trinsic merits. In no line of invention
and manufacture is this more noticeable
than in sewing machines, while hundreds
of these labor-saving contrivances have
been patented. Those which have stood
the test of public use may be numbered
on the fingers ends. Prominent among
these is tho Wheeler & Wilson, of world
wide fame. For twenty years this ma

over eight hundred thousand actual pur

The Wheeler A Wilson lias attained
