8t Louis has spent several millions of
dollar, on her vast bridge over Uio Mis

eeo tho end of her groat undertaking.
»jr a curioua and doti! device Vic jfigaa-

Just as this has been done there com os a
body of the most eminent United Stains
engineers, and says that the bridge, as
constructed, is an obstruction to naviga
tion. that large ship i cannot pose under
it at all stages of water, and that a" canal
will have to bo cat around tho eastern
abutment. This finding of the engineers
the St. Louis papers deny, and the Re
publican, e»penally, goes into facts and
figures, which are intended to show that
the cost of such a canal will be three mil
lions of dollars. As is perfectly natural,
the city of Su Louis does not' wish to bo
involved in this expense. Only a few ves
sels would be incommoded by the bri<|gc
at high water, and it is very plausibly
argued that high water does not prevail
often, and also that the stylo of boat in-
eonvtnienocd will soon eeaae to bo built,
