We bare briefly made mention of a
visit to Savannah by the Hibernian Soci
ety of Macon, but hare hitherto boon un
able to make a full statement of the pur
pose of that visit. The occasion of the
visit was the laying of the corner-stone of
the new Cathedral which is in process of
erection in that city. Of these ceremo
nies the Savannah Advertiser and Repub
lican has the following report:
We do not know when we have wit
nessed a grander display than that of
yesterday, on the occasion of the dedica
tion of the new Catholic Cathedral, cor
ner of Abercorn and Harris stresU.
Asia well known, the laying of thecor-
ner-stme took place yesterday afternoon.

As waa announced yesterday morning,
there will be no service in the Mulberry
Street Methodist Church to-day. The
storm of Sunday night so damaged the
plastering as to render immediate repairs
noccsary, und those repairs are now going
on; licneo the necessity of having no
service today, ns tho church is in no con

XI Mini mi me Windows.
Hue of the luuidsouiest spectacles in
the city is the show windows of Messrs.
Brown A Co,’a bookstore. They have
selected a few articles from their fine
stock of fancy goods, and arranged them
in tho windows with artistic tse tc, giving
the passing public a bare glimpse of the
txwntice on tho inside.
This, however, relates to ono window
only. The other was smashed by the cy
clone, and la now boarded up and paper

the papering, as fellows:

Tho different societies in our city,
mentioned in the programme which we
published on Tuesday morning in our lo
cal columns, and which was advertised
yesterday, were out in full force.
At the hour appointed the societies
commenced gathering on South Brood
street, near Ball, and by half post two a
large number of persons, members of the
different societies, members of the Irish
Jasper Groat* and citizens generally had
assembled at the point designated as the
starting point.
In accordance with the published pro
gramme, the prooossion was preceded by
the Hibernian brass bond, followed by the
Irish Jasper Greens, etc.
Soon after the numerous societies as-
aombled on the ground the march was
commenced. Wc stood quite near the
line, and as the different societies passed
along wc could not help noticing the large
number of members in each one. Even
the colored societies were well represent
ed. Never have we seen so largo a pro
cession in Savannah, that is an organized
procession as this was. The different so
cieties in onr city turned out in foreo with
their splendid banners flying.
As announced in this paper several
days ago, delegates from the Hibernian
societies of Macon and Augusta were
present snd marched in the procession.
The “Ancient Order of Hibernians,” of
Moron, brought down with them some
forty members, about thirty-five of whom
were in the prooession. The officers of
this society present on this occasion were
tho President, Mr. J.C. MeBurney; Vico
President, Patrick Payton; Treasurer,
I*. Kcrwin. and standard bcaror, P. lateen.
The banner carried by the Macon Hi
bernians is very similar to that carried
by our own Hibernians, an old banner
presented to a former society of the same
name in Macon, the parent of the present
society, by the wife of Hon. Judgo Loch-
rane.
The Macon Hibernians are stopping at
the Marshall House, and joined the Sa
vannah lliliuniiiuu yesterday afternoon
at that plaoo. The Augusta Hibernians
were represented by four delegates, who

Mr. Burr Brown lias received a proas,
ing invitation to go up to kkwsyth to as
sist the Ladies of that town in a concert,
which is to.be given on the 4th of De
cember. in nid of —ime charity. They
desire to have tiieir entertainment en
livened with mac of Burr's Dutch eomi-
realities. They make a good selection,
atid if he goes up and sings them his
sfkrii Owt,” oc otkozs that- be sang so
inimitably hen- some months ago, he will
jive the concert all tho life that is need
ed. There are few mat in the profession
also 'joined in tho procession, marching
along with the Savannah Hibernians.
The procession, under command of
Colonel Martin J. Ford, Chief Marshal,
together with first assistant and third as
sistant nm-shuls, John W. Reilly and
Dennis O'Connor. (tho second assistant
marshal, Mr. J. F. H. Blois, being provi
dentially prevented from officiating),pro
ceeded up South Brood to Whitaker, oat
Whitaker to Bay, thence to Lincoln, etc.,
finally stopping at the Cathedral, where
nn immense concourse of people were in
smiting.
It is difficult to givo a graphic descrip
tion qf the proceedings at the Cathedral.
Tho platform on the eastern end was
comfortably, indeed, elegantly arranged,
under the superintendence of Captain
John R. Dillon and the other members of
tho committee. Father Patrick was
present, and diligently engaged in fixing
up matters so that nothing should be
wanting upon tho arrival of tho proces
sion, tho bishops and clergy. Tho box
containing the almost innumerable! con
tributions and the corner-stone, an ele
gant block of marble, lay on tho south
side of tho platform.
This “corner-stone” is, as wo have
stated, a solid block of marble, with a
spore just large enough to admit tho
box. On ono sido of it is tho inscription,
erected November 1!>, 1873.”
Soon after tho arrival of the procession
tho different societies took their position
in front of tho stage or platform, the
"asper Greens acting as a guard on tho
rails. Tho people crowded inside of tho
iaelosnro until thcro wan room for no
more, while thousands stood on tho out
side. Even the housetops in tho neigh
borhood were crowded with thoso who
risked their lives to such an extent. Tho
number wns variously estimated at from
five to eight thousand. Wo are confi
dent that so large an assemblage has not
been seen in Savannah on any occasion
sin co the war.
As soon ns order was procured tho ccr-
-monics, which were very imposing and
very interesting commenced.
Bishop Grow laid tho corner stone.
Tho Bishop and clergy then pro- codod
around tlu> walls of tho ehurch. blessing
tlie foundations, according to the ritual
of the Roman Catholic Church. Psalms
were sung and tho Litany ot tho Saints
recited Wore and after the laying of the
Comor Stone.
Besides nil of tho clergy of tlio diocese
of Suvannnh, the following visiting pre
lates were in nttendonoo: Rt. Rev. Bish
op Gibbons, of Richmond,Va.t Very Rev.
Dr. Moore. Vicar General of Charleston;
Rev. Father Croghan, Rev. Father Nor
throp and Rev. Father Folchi, of Charles
ton, and Rev. Father Gross, of Wilming
ton. N. C.
Wo noticed also on tho platform seve
ral of the Aldermen of the city, promi
nent merchants, Gen. Ifemy C. Wayne,
and other 1 calling citizens.
After tho ceremonies of laying tho cor
ner stone. Bishop Gibbons, of Richmond,
advanced to the speaker’s stand and ad
dressed the assembled multitude in sub
stance as follows:
The Heavens declare tho g'ory of the
Lord, snd tho firmament announces the
work of His Hands.”
In tho beginning of tho world there
were no temples CEvqtod by human hands
for tho worship of Almighty God; the
vast firmament above ns was the great
dome in which God was worshipped; the
sun. moon and stars were the lamps light
ening up the sanctuary of nature. Tho
flowers and grass of tho field were the
sanctuary adorning this primeval cathe
dral ; and the birds of tho air singing
their morning and evening hymn to their
Creator » choir worthy of nature’s God.
Nor was this temple without its preacher.
Tho vast firmament above us proclaimed
God’s immensity. The thunder and tho
which .st. Pout preached in Atium, St.
IY-tor in B< me—this iz the gospol
which shall be ann-. :nced to you from
this temple; “Jesus Christ, the same
ye-t. r lay, to-luv and forever.” Re
joice in being members of this ever
lasting church, and say from your
hearts, “If I forget thee, O Jerusalem,
let my right hand be forgotten!" The
people of Savannah have been distin-
gui.-hed for their liberality. They have
generously contributed on former occa
sions towards the erection of churches in
other dioceses, and even in my own; and
I am sore that your mnnificcnce will
manifest itself still more strikingly in
contributing to the great work so aus
piciously inaugurated to-day. As the
children of Israel responded to the call
of Mooes, so will you re-pond to the call
of your beloved lliihop. In other coun
tries churches have been erected by
crowned heads and jeweled princesses,
but our reliance is on the generous
hearts of the people. Here, thank God,
we have no union of church and state .to
hamper the -free action of the church.
May bishops and priests ever continue to
bestow their labors, their talents and
their lives upon the people, and receive
in return the support and gratitude of
tiuar faithful children.
I offer one prayer; may your youthful
Bishop live to see the completion of this
great work. May he break the bread of
life upon the faithful and impose liis con
secrated hands upon your children. And
may you often have the happiness of
homing bis eloquent voice within the
walls of this noble Cathedral. And may
you all, both postern and people, have
the happiness of worshipping together in

After the sermon of Bishop Gibbons,
CoL Ford made a few remarks, and pro
posed three cheers for Bishop Gibbons.
As might hare been expected, the vast
multitude rent the air with about* and
cheers for the Bishop, who immediately
afterward mounted tho stand and thanked
them in appropriate terms.
Before the crowd disponed, the Jasper
Greens, under the command of their gal
lant Captain, Flanncty, were drawn np
on the extreme western side of the build
ing, and fired a salute of threo volleys,
which was dono in splendid stele.
Everything that could possibly bo dono
hrel now concluded these, the most inter
esting and imposing ceremonies that have
been witnessed in Savannah for many a
day, and the pooplo began to dnqterao.
The Hibernian Society of our city es
corted their guests from Macon and Au
gusta back to tho Marshall House, where
they had prepared an entertainment for
them.
There were one hundred and seventy
persons who contributed articles—chiefly
coins—to be deposited in the corner
stone.
THU SUPERIOR COURT.
A Mistrial In the Pike Case.
Tho suspense is over at last, and the
jury, after being out over forty hours,
have been discharged, being unable to
agree upon a verdict in tho Pike case.
Tho case was given to tho jury about half
past four o'clock Thursday evening, and
thoy remained out until nino o'clock yes
terday morning, when they were called
down and discharged from farther con
sideration of tho matter. It is understood
that seven of the jurors were for acquit
tal, and fivo were in favor of a verdict of
voluntary manslaughter. It was no doubt
a groat relief to the jurors to be dis
charged, as they hud been away from
their homes since Monday morning.
Wo think that, when tho jury first
wont out, it was generally expected that
they would lie ablo to agree upon a ver
dict in a short while; but as tho minutes
and the hours passed and ten o'clock ar
rived without any report, tho people very
generally made up their minds that there
would be no verdict, and such has been
tho result.
This disposes of the case for the pres
ent, and Piko returns to his old quarters
in tho jail. The next stop of his counsel
will probably be to got him out on bail,
provided ho can succeed in givinga satis
factory bond.
Tho court will continue its session next
woek. Jurors are notified to be on hand
punctually at 0 o’clock.
Brown's Hotel.
Undoubtedly ono of the host hotels in
the United States is Brown's Hotel, at
Macon, Ga. Its popularity is consid
erably due to the just reputation of its
proprietors, the Messrs. Brown, for the
affability and the kindlier qualities of tho
true gentleman; hut it is also due to its
splendid table, its comfortable and well
furnished apartments, and the fine man
agement that puts cvcty guest at his

ing. Indeed, it is a luxury to stop at

IX MKMOKIAMs V
Departed this life, on tho 6th of November, at
his residence in Perry, Ga^ after a short illness
of pneumonia, Roseut W. Basein. He had
readied nearly the age of 71 years, lie was one
of the first settlers of Houston county, having
moved to it from Wilkinson, his native county*
about the tinia of the removal of tho Indians from
this port of the countiy.
As a business man he was successful, and a
good financier. IIo was remarkable for strong
common sense, which controlled him in all his
business transactions. He was punctual to all his
engagements, and eminently an honest man. He
was a man of extraordinary decision of diaracter,
and of natural and moral courage. Ue dared to
do right and to reprove any evildoer. He
three tim» married, and leaves an affectionate
wife and six children—nil tho daughters of his first
wife—to mourn his loss. He was an excellent
father and husband, and shared largely in the
affections of liis family.
As a Christian he was distinguished. For many
yean be had “used the office of a deacon well, and
purchased tohimsclfagood degree and great bold-
ms in tho faith.”
Two Christian graces chiefly distinguished him
—humility and faith. In his humility be “walked
softly before God,” and ever esteemed others bet
ter than himself. In his faith he saw the hand of
God. and sought divine direction in all things,
and ho connected works with his faith. Ue was
willing to do. as well as believe, all that God com
manded.
He was eminently a man of prayer. Tl»c prayer-
meeting was liis delight, and his scat was never
vacant when it was possible for him to attend.
On tho family altar lie kept the fire always burn
ing, and plead earnestly with God daily for soda]
and family blessings. To this his children often
referred in his dying hours.
He sought daily for submission to tbe dirine
mind, and prayed for perfect resignation. He had
been a member of the Baptist Church almost
thirty years. Tho lust work lie engaged in was
going to soo a si?k brother.
Tlio call for hi* d#sith was sud«len, but did not
find him unready. During his illness ho spoke of
his faith—tlio grounds of his trust—and the sure
foundation in Christ. Ue said repeatedly that be
trusted alotio in Christ for salvation.
When he saw that ho must dio be said to his
wife: **I must give it all up now and take tbe
chances.” And wlicu she added “I hopo your
chances are good.” he said: “Yes, in Jesus Christ.”
He died with composure, taking leave of his family
and friends; giving them counsel and encourage
ment; sending messages to absent friends and
brethren. To one he sent, “Tell him 1 am on my
way to tho celestial city.” Ho preserved his con-
n to the last, and when prayer was made
for him he added his hearty “Amen.” He re
quested tho writer to preach his funeral sermon,
and gavo as the text. “Daughters of Jerusalem,
weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and
weep for your children.” As his vision failed him
be asked that tbe blinds of the windows might be
opened that ho might behold the light. Just as
the sun arose—a beautiful sunrise—tbe soul of
tbe good man passed away. It seemed to say to
nn has not act, bat risen; this is but the
beautiful morning of an unending day.”

For twelve months I have been troubled with
indigestion. I have tried a great many prescrip
tions from physicians, but nothing has ever given
me any relief until I commenced using your Sim
mons' Liver Regulator. It has enabled me to
sleep well, and has relieved me of those strange,
miserable feelings I had suffered from before its
use. I think it is the best patent medicine in
use. All my customers say it is what you claim
for it. Yours, truly,
