Yesterday wav judgment day in the
Superior Court, but only one conriet came
tip to hear his doom. That was Amos
Bon», the colored man who was convicted
on Friday, of an rnvault with attempt to
commit a rape upon the person of Jean
nette I.a.ter, a ton year old colored girl.
The Judge sentenced him to twenty years
imprisonment in tho ponitontuuy—the
full extent of tho law.
The case, aa stated yesterday, will go
before the Supreme Court.

Wo have heretofore abstained from any
extensive notice of the business or busi
ness prospects of this house. ’ We can as
sure our readers no similar concern
stands higher in tho appreciation of its
patrons than they. Perceiving early in
tho present financial troubles the n e dty
of cast as the basis of future transac
tions, and a consequent reduction in
values as a m- uiv for promoting it, they
boldly prepared, to uuvt the situation by
marking down evtuy chus of mcrchail-
diseand announcing east as thoir stand
ard. To t'.ie surprise of none more than
themselvM. trade has been increased and
facilitated by adopting this' curt rule.

timed speech, Mr. Watkins feelingly al
luded to the kindness bo had experienced
during a tour of Ireland, but while seek
ing to apologize for an "American tongue
trying to turn at Irish brogue,” he
interrupted by a stentorian voice from
the gallery, "Never mind your br
you’re the next best thing to an Irishman
anyhow." This was received by a torna
do of applause, during which Mr. W„
satisfied by such an endorsement of his
"temerity,” pantomimed his thanks and
retired. We have not time at present to
refer, at length, to the acting, but must
content onrsclvev with merely stating,
what everybody who was present knows,
that Mrs. Watkins played tbe heroine
most charmingly—investing it with all
the archness,simplicity and feeling which
so characterises this lady’s extremely
natural stylo of outing. Her rendering
of the beautiful lollad from which the
drama takes its name, was a gem in itself,
and fully merited the hearty encore it re
ceived. Of Mr. Watkins, it is only nec
essary to record that his acting of "Ter
ence'* was worth the applause it elicited
from the crowded audienco. To our read
ers wo would say, if you desire to enjoy
a superb drama, superbly acted, go and
see Mr. and Mrs. Watkins in "Kathleen
Mavoumeeq”—which, from tho favora
ble reception of the evening, will no
doubt keep tho bills for some time. .

Monument to a Colored Mnn,
In passing Mr. James O'Brien’s mar
ble-yard. on Cherry street, a few days
ago, ottr attention was called to a very
neat granite monument, bearing the fol
lowing inscription:
"To tho Memory of
Richard Mason.
Died March 27th, 1870.
" In kind remembrance of whom, for
his industry and faithfulness while an
omployc of the several railroads with
which he was connected in tho capacity
of baggage-man and porter, tho officers
ami employes most feelingly erect this
monument.*
Tho cost of this monument was $200,
and,tho fund for its purchase was raised,
as tho above legend indicates, by sub
scription among the officers and em
ployes of the mails centering here. The
object of this hamlsomo tribute was a
colored man, who for many years per
formed tho duties of porter at tho pas-
songer depot in this dty. Ho was faith
ful and trustworthy throughout, hcnco
this handsome tribute to his mcmoiy.
