a more which had a young colt, leaving
the colt at home. When ho returned to
. his home Wednesday, the colt rushed at

without a rival in or out of Georgia.
The steamer has been named the Simri

At n late hour Wednesday night a gang
of colored pooplo passed along ono of the
streets of Macon bearing the rigid body
of a colored woman upon a stretcher. A
gontleman who was passing, thinking
perhaps sotno accident had happened,
asked a woman in tho party what was tho
matter witli the woman on the shutter.
Tho answer was, ‘‘God struck her.” This
puttied tho gentleman more than over,
and ho pursued his inquiries until ho

sanctity of character.
Why .Should Your Families Suffer
Want Hereafter?
Dr.H. dnritb, the General Agentof the
Piedmont and- Arlington Life Insurance
Company, makes this pertinent inquiry.
For a very small sum paid when in the
full vigor and strength of health and
manhood, you can assure competence and
independence to your loved ones when
called upon, perhaps suddenly, to pay the
last debt of nature.
How tranquil the rest, how easy tho
conscience of tho man who performs
this duty to his family—a duty para
mount to every other, and which nothing
save ignorance can excuse. Will anyone
say I can't afford the expense ? Let him
retrench in personal matters, and the
task will become easy. How many cigars
do you smoke per annum ? What amount
is expended in pleasure seeking ? What
are your wine bills ? Can you not wear
a coat, or sport boots a trifle leas costly
for the love you cherish for wife and
bairns ? Think on these things, and
when you have succeeded in banishing
selfishness from your heart, then lose not
a moment in securing tho Doctor's advice
and assistance. Ho will insure you at as
low rates as can be afforded by any re
sponsible company, and according to any
legitimate'plan you may select. More
over, he will provide for your every want
in sickness, so that bread and sustcnanco
may not be lacking when you are physi
cally unablo to labor. , -
Holding a policy too, in the Piedmont
and Arlington, you have nothing to fear
from losses of. any kind. That institu
tion is established upon a basis so firm
and enduring, and its officers arc so faith
ful to their trusts and prudent in the
management of its concerns, that no
earthly venture can bo more safe and
certain. Remember then, ye who have
hitherto neglected to insure your lives,
that Dr. Beckwith can always bo found
at his offico on Mnlbcrry street, and tho
sooner you attend to this duty, tho hap
pier will you be. Delays are dangerous.
Should you be cut off to-night, are your
beloved families provided for? If not,
how sad their condition and how terribly
embittered will be the last moments of
your existence. Take heed then, and in-
saro immediately in tho Piedmont and
Arlington.

When death Jays his cold sad icy hand unex- !

of ckirvtu which distinguished him. and cc-

the prominent men of the county. In 1861 he
was elected a member of the Legislature, in which
on active and on influential member. After
the expiration ofhis term of office os a member of
the Legislature, he was elected one of the Judges
of the Inferior Court, which position he filled
with credit to himself and satisfactorily to the
people, until that Court was oboKshpd. He was
justly considered, the most popular man in the
county, but would not afterwords yield to the so
licitations of friends and permit bis name to be
presented os a candidate for any office whatever.
He was a man of extraotdinarily fine practical
sense, blended with a wonderfully correct judg
ment. pleasing manners, and fine conversational
powers. In all his intercourse with his fellow men
ha was courteous and kind—in his business trac
tions. scrupulously honest. He was an affection*
ate husband, a kind father, a true friend, a devout
Christian, a good Mason, a cultivated gentleman,
on honest, upright man. He was ever ready to
comfort the afflicted and to relieve the distressed.
These characteristics gave him pre-eminence
among his fellows, and endeared him to us as a
citizen and a friend.
Jodge Jones was attacked with a disease which
the physicians call malarial hematuria, and was
confined to his bed only four days previous to his
death. Ills physicians, who were in constant at
tendance upon him. and rendering all the aid
which human skill could administer, considered
him doing well, when, unexpectedly, the paroxysm
returned, which soon terminated in ueath. He
died about 6 o’clock r. M. on Thursday, the 27th
ultimo. His remains, attended by hit stricken
and bereaved family and some friends, were con
veyed to tbe city of Atlanta, where hi,* father,
Mr. John Jones, resides, for interment, and there,
on Sunday lost, were deposited in the cold and
silent grave, with Masonic honors by the Masons
of that dty. upon the request of Eureka Lodge, 61
which he was on honored member.
We sought his counsels, and were guided
his judgment in many of the important affairs of
life. Now hois gone! A nobleman by nature is
no more! With his grief-stricken family, we
mourn bis loss. But they and we have reason to
believe that the Christian faith and hope which
guided him through life did not desert him in the
hour of death, and the departing spirit left a
smile upon his face, proclaiming its triumph over
death and the grave, and seeming to say. in the
language of the great Apostle. 44 O, Death, where
is thy sting? O. Grave, where is thy victory?”
Eureka.
