CAPITAL—fiUUH
MANUFACTUKED BY
Langdale’s Chemical Manure Companv
(LIMITED.) r ’>
NEW CASTLE-ON-TYNE, ENGLAND.
Has tlie following Powerful Recommendations for Planters;
It is a genuine .English made Manure, the only ono in tie market, and nm-.
facturod by .a company haying a capital of $1,250,000, which soils -10,000 tom am',
ally, and lias the most extensive works of tho kind in Groat Britain, xvliioli W
been in operation 24- years. The Langdale, therefore, has a good pedigree and is c j
experiment.
It contains a larger proportion of chemical elements suited for the promotioj
of vegetable life, and especially of cotton, than any other fertiliser offered in tn
South. It is the best and safest Cotton Manure in the market.
The analysis given with the Manure when sold will he guaranteed. There shdj
be no mistake about tlie genuineness of the article, nor, the good faith of the vendor,
It is the cheapest Manure offered, as it contains nothing but what is of use b
becoming plant-food, or by chemical action on the soil, producing the same. TKs
test of cheapness is not the price, hut the actual worth of the article rmchvvi
Low-priced Manure cannot contain efficient quantities of pure and valuable chord
cals, which can alone give worth to a fertilizer, and bring satisfactory result;. Tho
Langdale is as low in price as is consistent with the use of the host iugrediiAit?, ard
a fair commercial protit on its cost.
The employment of powerful machinery in mixing and pulverizing the ingte-
dients prepare* every particle for service, anti prevents trouble in using. The he;
dale is unequalled in this respect, and impresses every one who sees it as a perfectly
manipulated Manure.
In its composition and preparation it is the result of careful scientific research
and experiment, confirmed by practical application for a quarter of a century. It
will bo maintained at its present high standard, and is thus what planters hate
long wanted—a thoroughly reliable and safe Manure.

were ;50t5,0C0.2o0. The t-4al expendi
ture oi Great Britain is in a round sum
.iOO,(00,000, or $345,000,000, about $30,-.
000.000 more than was appropriated in
IS73-4 and only about S2G,000,000 more
than is aaked for by our efficials for the
expenditure for IM74-5. It maybe inter
esting to compare the expenditures of
the two nations.
If we deduct from the English expend
iture the interest ion the debt, amounting
in a round sum to $135,000,000, there rc-
main$210,'OOO.OOOfor other expenses. And
if we deduct tlie interest on the American
debt, and allow fully $101,000,000, there
remained in 1873-4. $202,000,000, and in
1874-5, if tie.- estimates aro appropriated,
$215,000,000, to be applied for all other
expenditures. It would not be fair to take
especial notice of the $30,000,000 pensions
in the United States and ignore tlie Eng
lish pensions, which, if the co3t of the
royal family is charged to this account,
would more than make the $30,000,000.
Hence the two nations, after deducting
the interest on their debts, stand fair.
It remains to be shown wliat England
has got for her money and wliat the
United States. Of the $210,000,000 ex
pended in England, minus the interest on
the debt, England has:
First—A navy that, if no addition to
the present navie3 of Iiusaia, France, and
the United States were made, could not
only cope with all three but might bo
able to vanquish them, on account of su
periority in nnmbcra and quality of ship3
and in the numerical force of men.
Second—England maintains an army
fully five times as largo as ours, with

“wk Ann not uotkc, to no>r«.”;
•‘No, sir, we nxe not going to Rome. It
is true that thero are n few individuals
who run into exce-a at ono end or the
other, but tlrnt need not affect the peace,
comfort or religious welfare of the great
body. In a largo ecclesiastical body like
tho Episcopal Church there will lie, nec
essarily, n great divergence of opinion
and practice. Before condemnation is
made of this a large latitude should be
given and allowances made for the vary
ing conditions nnd circumstances in which
each church finds itself. There is another
reason why we could not go to Rome.
Tho Romish Church demands of its peo
ple implicit subscription to its doctrines.
It assumes the authority to promulgate
doctrines, as in the doctrine of tlie Im-
moeulate Conception, and on that pro
mulgation it asks nnd demnnds obedi
ence. At tho other end is freedom of
opinion, individual responsibility, tlie
right or tho individual—out of which lias
eoino tho rationalism of Germany. The
Episcopal Church of England and our
own Church stands midway between
these. We inquire, as to doubtful doc
trine or practice, wliat do tlie Scriptures
nay ? And if we need enlightenment ns
to that we go hack fo tlie Fathers, as
they are called, of the Church—not the
jnodin'val age, lmt of the first four centu
ries—to see what their comment is, nnd
thus wo hoar the Scriptures and tho
Church. Now this is essentially different
to the method of the Romish Church, nnd
cannot bo coufoundod with it.”

Stale rs. If%Mam Li’nl/iair.—Indictment
I fur misdemeanor, tried before Russell,
Judge at Robeson Superior Court, spring
term, 1873.
Defendant was indicted for disturbing
n religious congregation. The evidence,
ns detailed by several witnesses, was sub-
I ftanlially this: Defendant is a member
of tlie Methodist Church. Ho sings in
such a way as to disturb tho congrega-
t.on. At the end of. each verse his voice
is hoard after all the other singers have
ceased.
One of tlie witnesses being requested
to describe defendant’s singing imitated
it by singing a verse in tlie voice nnd
manner of defendant, which “produced a
1 inrst of prolonged and irresistible laugh
ter, convulsing alike the spectators, the
bar, the jury and the court.’’
It was an evidence that the disturb
ance occasioned by defendant's singing
was decided nnd serious; the effect of it
was to make ono port of the congrega
tion laugh and the other mad; that the
irreligious and frivilons enjoyed it as fun
while tho serious and devout were in
dignant.
It was also in evidence (without objec
tion) that the congregation had been so
much disturbed by it that the preacher
had declined to sing tho hymn, and shut
up the hook without singing it; that tho
presiding elder hod refused to preach in
the church on account of the disturbance
occasioned by it; and that on ono occa
sion a leading member of tho church,
appreciating that there was a feeling of
solemnity pervading the congregation in
consequence of tlie sermon just delivered,
and fearing that it would be turned into
ridienie, went to tlie defendant and 1
asked him not to sing, and on that oeca-
