Times are hard, money is scarce, taxes

such a thing as economising in tho wrong

one that demands the most serious reflec-

j YVe think our correspondent misappre
hends the meaning of tho tonn “fine

t by it to describe a building peculiar for
tho beauty and elaborateness of its archi

do not mean to intimate tli.it the proposed
building is to have marble mantels, or

A Court-House Bursr#
From the following letter from an agent
at Newton, On., it will be seen that the
Baker eounty Court-house, situated at
Newton, together with nearly all the re
cords of the eounty, were consumed by
fire ou the morning of tho 18th instant.
This is a serious disaster to our Baker
county friends, coming as it does when
taxes are so heavy and money so scarce:
Newton, Ga., December 18, 1873.
Editor* Tiltfravh and Messenger: Our
Court-house, with nearly all the county
record*, was destroyed by fire this morn
ing. The Ordinary carelessly left a fire
in his office when ho left it lost night, and,
Ot 15 minutes to 1 o’clock this morning,
tho whole inside of the house was discov
ered to be in flames. There was nothing
saved from the building. AU the papers
and records of the Ordinary's office were
lost. The elerk of the court had at his
store record of deeds No. 20, two records
of mortgages—B and C—execution dock
et from November term, 1859, bar com
mon law docket from November term,
1860, record of homesteads, penal bond
look, and civil supreme docket, all of
which were saved. AU the other records
ot his office were destroyed. The Court
house was a splendid wooden buUding,
and cost, in 1S50, $5,000. The lost wUl
