>i.fficulty, n. r i it ne ■■.tuij now, as the
affair will probably undergo legal invest-
j igation in a few days, when all the facts
i >01 be beenght to light.
Th.. quarrel, which resulted in the af-
1 fray, began in Vannudd'* saloon. Young
- Anthony Vamuicki was behind tho bar at
. the time, and bearing the quarrel in th
| back-room, went in and made Dunn
; leave the house. Dunn went out the
I front way, and shortly aftsr Rainey went
, out at the back door, which opened into
j the alley, and the two met at the mouth
, of the alley when the difficulty ensued,
in which Dunn cut Rainey with a knife,
i in left lower part'of the abdomen, produc-
. ing u dang.-roua looking wound, but one
j that was not at first considered likely to
result fatally. From the effect of this
wound Rainey died os above stated.
Dunn was arrested shortly after the
cutting and taken to the barracks. The
following morning he was tried before
the Mayor on tho charge of disorderly
conduct. Ho probably Bettlod this fine,
as lie was shortly afterword released. He
remained about the city until yesterday
morning, when he went ilto the country
on a visit to some ono who lives about
six miles out. When he left he had no
knowledge that Rainey's condition was
at all precarious. A warrant was issued
yesterday evening for liis arrest, and of
ficers were sent out to bring him in. It
is probable tliat he will bo in jail before
this paper reaches its city readers.
Coroner Harman was notified of tho
death of Mr. Rainey, and, summoning n
jury, went to the late residence of the
docoasod to hold an inquest upon the
body; but. owing to the absence of the
physician who had attended Mr. Rainey,
and also of the parties who witnessed the
difficulty, tho inquest was deferred until
9 o’clock this morning, when it will be
held.

ii not probablo, however, that any change
will 1h> made, as tho present incumbents

better than to re-elect them nil.
Going West.
Some twenty or thirty negroes came up
on the Southwestern road yesterday, on
their way to tho West. They said they
were going to Kansas. This is tho first
emigrant lot of tho season. Tho fever
doos not seem to have arisen very high
this year, as thoio who wont out last win
ter have not sent Cock very exalted ro-
ports of their success in the West. They
havo found that tho prico of bread, no
matter where they are, is hard labor, and
thnt is what they hoped toavoid by going
West.
Oliver, Dougins* X Co,
We call attention to tho advertisement
of these gentlemen, which appears in this
issue. They, it will bo remembered, took
the premium at tho late State fair on the
best cooking-stove, and also on tho best
display of cutlery. They now have in
store a very large stock of stoves, nnd all
other goods in their line, to which they
invito the attention of buyers. They will
havo no difficulty whatever in satisfying
every one in it gard to prices. Their
goods are for sale, and they intend to sell
thorn.
Another Ksrnpr Irnnilho « IihIii Gang.
J ames IUahnxdaou. a negro chain-gang
convict made liis ovMpe Saturday night,
and is still at large. This makes seven
teen convicts now at large, all cf whom
oacoped through the inefficiency of the
guard. Two or threo others havo escaped,
but were recaptured and returned. It
lias gotten to be little more than a mock
ery of justice to sentence criminals to the
chain-gang, os they escape with perfect
ease. Unless the road contractor con
afford to furnish an adequato guard it is
useless to send him any more prisoners,
ns it is equivalent to turning them loo-o
to go when and where they please.
The Mayor’s Court.
nis Honor, tho Mayor, hail five delin
quents before him yesterday morning
most of whom wore down with tho old
complaint. All were colored but one.
Peter Wilburn admitted that he was
drunk and disorderly, and ho was fined
fivo dollars.
nrun McBride denied being drunk and
disorderly. The charge was proven,
however, and he had to pay his fivo
dollars.
Daniel Clayton was up for stealing a
watch. Ilo admitted tho chargo and
proposed to take tho officer to whore ho
hail pawned tho timo-pieco for some
ChrWtmq3 money. Ho will probably
haul up beforo Judge Weems.
Lucinda Washington, colored, was
drunk nnd disorderly Saturday night.
Her fino was fivo dollars.
James Henderson, a citizen of Jones
county, came over to Macon to havo
somo Christmas. Ho got a little too
much of it in him, and endeavored to
work it out by rocking a house on the
corner of Fourth and Cherry streets, to
tho great destruction of tho glass that
was in llio windows. It cost him ten dol
lars to have his spreo. It wouldn’t havo
cost near that much over in Jones.

DIED,
In tlii* city, on tho 8th of December instant, ol
pneumonia, 3Ir. Era spa Jeffers, in tho 41st
year of his nze.
Death loves a shining mark. JIo spares none.
The high places of the earth are visited oy the
Destroyer, and monarch^ fall before liim. Often
arc the homes of the humble made the abodes of
sorrow and oh! how many hearts have been sad
dened at the loss of some household treasure.
Some have been permitted to wrap around them
the drapery of their couch and lie down in peace:
some have been suddenly cut down in the conflict
of arms, while others have been tho victims of
disease. And thus, day by day, are the youns and
the lovely, the high and the low, the rich and the
poor, taken away.
But in reiy truth can it be said, that a warmer
heart never ceased to throb than that possessed
by Eraexe Jeffers. Tho writer knew him well.
An intimacy from boyhood gave ample opportu
nity to discover his qualities. His nature was
warm and genial; and liis generosity was a marked
feature in his character. As a friend, he was true
and steadfast; as a comrade, nono more agreea
ble; as a citisen, the law found fn him one whose
name was without reproach; and as a gentleman,
the highest evidence is the testimony of those
who knew him best.
While he loved peace, and inculcated the prin
ciple of “good irill to all men,” yet, when tho
guns of Sumter announced to the people of .the
South lliat the conflict had indeed begun, Eugene
was too nobio a patriot, too true a Georgian, to re
main at home, and his record as a soldier is the
proudest legacy ho could leave behind him. He
went to Virginia as a member of company 1,61st
Georgia regiment, attached to the famous Gor
don’s brigade, and won tho confidence of tho en
tire regiment. As a soldier, the Stars and Bars
of tlio “Lost Cause” never cast a shallow upon
one more devoted to its interests. Always at his
post, and yielding ready, obedience to the com
mands of his superiors, he came to be regarded as
a model for others to imitate. And when tho red
hurricane of war passed away, and the sword was
converted into the pruning hook, our friend re
turned home and resumed the pursuits of peace.
Tho incidents of army life had not blunted his
fine sensibilities nor deadened tho impulses of his
generous heart; but with all these high qualities
burnished nnd refined* ho returned as he went—
the true citizen and steadfast friend.
But our friend is no longer with us. No longer
will his cheerful voico sene to drivo dull care
away, or shorten the hours of leisure. That voice
is hushed. In our beautiful Rose Hill Cemetery
reposes all that is mortal of Eugene Jeffers ;
but iii the hearts of those who knew him best and
rightly appreciated the hearty spontanivty of his
unselfish nature, will liis memory live and be ever
frcsli and green.
Though not a professor of religion, in the ordi
nary meaning of tho term, yet wo are fully satis
fied that in his last hours he held sweet commun
ion with his Maker—leaving to his sorrowing rel
atives and friends tho assurance thnt all was well.
With this we should be content, and we close this
last tribute to the companion of our youth, and
the friend of our riper years, in the full belief that
his homo is with tho redeemed in heaven.
“Thou art gone to tho grave—we no longer behold
thee,
Nor tread the rough paths of the world by thy
side;
But tho wido arms of mercy were spread to enfold
thee.
And sinners may die, for the Sinless hath died.”

* There woro some errors in our infor
mation in regard to the shooting of Dave
Herrington at Haddock's Station, on
Christmas Eve. He was shot by Mr.
Henry Patterson, and not by a man
named Harrison, as was stated. Tho
wounds are supposed to be mortal, though
Herrington was still alive at hist ac
counts. Patterson l'red at him twice—
tho first ball taking effect in his neck
and llio second in his side. "We havo not
learned the cause of tho difficulty; but
understand that it was not a sudden
quarrel between the two men, but grew
out of previous trouble of some sort. It
is believed that Herrington will die.
