At about half-past twelve o’clock last
night Major Hoff receivsd a telegram
from Mayor F. G. Wilkins, of Columbus,
a,king that aid from onr Fire Depart
ment be «ent over by a special train.
The bells of the city called the Depart
ment out, and in a short while our gal
lant firemen were ready for the journey.
Major Wilkins’ telegram foreshadowed
the gravest remits. It stated that the
city was fired in several places. The
origin and progress of the flames are de
scribed In our special telegrsme.
The Eankin House, where they origi
nated, la the finest and best hotel in tho
city, situated in the very midst o: the
business portion of Columbus, In tho
most thickly bmlt op and valuable part of
the city. High winds were fanning tho
flames.
Tho Fire Department is crippled, and
we shudder to hear tne next intelligence
from the doomed city.
The hour for oloetng the telegraph office
arrived, and wo aro foraed to wait nntil

Mayor Ha ft used the greatest energy
possible and his efforts word gallantly
seconded by tho Department. Never
have the distressed called but Macon bos
been ready in tier response.
Nos. 8 and 6 Fire Companies, with their
steamers, were detailed for tbe trip and
left with tho machine! and a good quota
of men for the burning city.
We hope that the conflagration which
seems so disastrous now may be controll

Evidence In Ktbiiccal Btfsre Cam-
mlaaloaer Freeman.
Yesterday at ten o’clock tee attorneys'
representing both parties in 'tbo re
cent municipal contest, met at the offioe
of Magistrate M. B. Freeman for the
parposo of arguing the question sprang
by tbe attorneys for Dr. A. P. Collins,
and the contesting Board of Aldermen,
toaehingMr. Freeman’s competency to
sit ai Commissioner.
The point made, on the previous day*
was that Mr. Freeman had been recently
eleoltd Keeper of tbe City Magazine, and
that he was consequently {disqualified
from setting, as he was intereatod in the
relink of the contest.
The point was well taken, and would
probably bavo boon decided for the oon-
teatouts. Before argument, was entered
npoa, Mr. Freeman stated, that although
ho had been eleoted.to to tbe offioe he had
never been officially notified of the
fact, bad not been qualified, nor oom-
plied with tbe requirements of tbe law,
iu regard to malting a bond, et-o.,
and, moreover, that he had sent a note
to the Board of Aldermen which eleoted
him, dueling the position. This removed
tbe objeoiion.
Mr. T. B Qreibam made the point that
Mr. Freeman waa not a legal judicial of
ficer as he held an office under tho United
States government, citing tbo section
of the code bearing on the snbject. The
objection was overruled by Mr. Freeman
on the grounds that the kind of officer
referred to in the section was one holding
an office under the Government of the
United States, and that he held his office
as United Slates Commissioner nndcr the
appointment of tbo United States Conrt,
and not by tho appointment of the gen
eral government.
The taking of evidences was then com
menced.
The first witness sworn was Mr. John
Bright, a constable for Mr. Freeman.
He testified that he had gone to the City
Hall to register; that several were in the
clerk’s office at tho time; that Mr. Boss,
tbe clerk, promised to register his same;
he left the office with the impression that
It had been done. On the day of the
eleotion, ho presented his ballot and it
was refused on tho ground that he was not
registered. He then went to Mr. Boss
and requested a certificate to the effect
that he had been registered. This was
declined; but Mr. Boss promised to go to
the precinot in the seoond ward and see
that he was not deprived of his vote.
He waited at the polls bat could not find
Mr. Boss, and after waiting a long while
went home and so loet his vote,
Mr. W. Desaan was next put on the
stand. He was questioned as to the
vote of Mr. L. L. Zalouski.
He testified that Mr. Zalontki had told
him that his vote had bsen challenged
when ha first presented it at tbs voting
precincts, and that late in the day be vo
ted, but that he did not know whether
hia vote was challenged or whether he
was sworn at that time or not.
He did not not know at what time Mr.
Zoloncki became a tealdent of tbe city,
ont was under the impression that it was
in September last.
Mr. Theo. W. Ellis was next called
and sworn. His testimony was that he
^as present at the .city election on the
lt:h of Deoember. He paid no negro or
negroes any money to vote in that elec
tion that he knew a colored man by the
name ot Green Bickerson, but did not
know whether he voted or not, except
from hearsay; did not see him veto; does
not know where he resides exoept from
hearsay; knew nothing except what be
learned from hearsay about Theodore
Jackson, oolored; saw a great many ne
groes vote, bat did not know them;
thought he knew of some negroes who
voted who were non resident#; he did
not endeavor to vote non-resident negroes,
but tried to keep them from voting. Mr.
Ellis stated that he did not know any
thing about Green Bionereon, but that
he heard that some negroes, followers of
Mr. Huff, had been intimidating him for
voting for Dr. Collins.
The Court then adjourned until three
o’clock. At that time Mr. W. T. Snin-
holser. of Baikcom A Shinholrer, was put
on the stand. He testified that about two
weeks before the election Dr. Coilius and
Mr. Barfield came iuto bis store and left
$40, to be used in the election in the in
terests of Dr. Collins and the Bcaid of
I Aldermen. That it wa* to used, both
for spirits and votes. That he knew of
six persons whom he had thus influenced.
He had put the ballots in their bauds
and saw them deposited in the ballot-
boxes. He did not know whether tbos
whom he had voted h»d paid thei
taxes, or whether] they were resi
dents or not. Thongbt that more than
six persons bad been influenced by tbis
iooej.' A general itemized statement of
how the money was spent was made. Yo-
ser will be croat-ixsmined by the coun
sel for the conteeUnta.
There a at no session of the other Court
of evidence before Judge Holt yesterday.
It will be held this morning at 9 o’clock
and evidence taking returned.
sadden Death if an Csknswa Hin-
Fenttfl Deed by the Hide nf tbe Hail-
road.
Yesterday morcicg about leu o’clock a
man was discovered lying immediately
by the side of the track of the Central
Jisileoad at a point near Cross Keys,
about four miles from the olty. The
body was found lying .by tbe Eido of the
track of the Central Baiitosd, lying oc

The authorities of the road were noti

paneled, which, After taking the evidence
at hand, rendered a verdict that tho de
ceased earns to his death from causes un
known to the jury. There was no paper
of any kiDd about the unfortunate man
to give a clue ub to his identity, and the
only came >o he found was that of T, P.
Woolfoik, whioh was written on a towel
found in one of the dead man’s pockets,
and which evidently was not his.
By his side were several bottles, one
with varmah' and one with whisky, and
some paints and materials, showing his
trade.
There were no serious wounds about
his person. Oa the right side of his fore
head was a bruised place which looked
as if it had been done in falling against
the frozen e^rth, and blood was ' oozing
frem bis right ear and nostrils. His
akoll was not broken. From all circum
stances it is supposed that he was intoxi
cated and froze to death.
The body was brought to the city on
a hand car acd provided with a suitable
coffin by Coroner Ctapman. The deceas
ed wa? seen Thursday evening in the
oity, and later, near Walnut Creek, In aa

over somo .of the offices was very spirited,
especially bo over that of Junior Second
Lieutenant, several ballots being neoes-
aary to a choice. Some of tho ballots
were very close. The election wsb con

Remedy lor Poisoning by Ev

Fsbbt, Ga., Deo. 81, 1878.
Editors Telegraph and Hasenger i After
resiling ths account published in your
paper on Sunday, I would feel culpable
iu withholding from the public a remedy
which I know by practical teat to be in
fallible.
Last Febintry I had two fine Durham
oowg pui.-oned. They ate of the ever
greens sometime d ring the dsy, bat
wero not kaowa to be siok cotil milking
time. One vomited a quantity of the
leaves; by that I fonnd ont the eauae of
their S'.okness. One Jld not vomit, and
when fonnd had fallen, and was lashing
the pruned with her bead eo fnricuily that
her neck seemed in danger of being bro
ken. Sh? oauld not be gotten up. I
gave each one pint of Lrd and three eggs,
breiking the shells on their teeth and
foroicg oil down their tbrn*ts. In a few
boars I gave each a quart of sweet milk;
next morning, occ-hx’f pint lard each;
at night oce pint slipper; elm water. In
a few dajs they were perfectly restored.
I thought I would btve the remedy
pcfcl shed then, but postponed it from
time io time. However, snob things are
always iu reach, and accident! of the
kind likely to oosnr as; time. They are
only poisonous after being partially with
ered ; eaten from tbs green trees they
are harmless. Respectfully,
