been remitted by the treasurer to tbe
Howard Association at Memphis. The
last amount ($2,000) was sent yesterday.

disease is very malignant- Thirteen out

er.

that Mbs Arabella Baker, a very pretty
and highly respectable yonng lady, re
siding near Old Sweet Springs, was ont-
raged yesterday by a white man. sup
posed to bo a tramp. Miss Biker was
milking a cow when assaulted, and
thongu baring but one hand made a des
perate resistanoe. During the struggle
the thumb of her right hand was
almost severed by a knife and nearly
f very thread of clothing was torn off.
The excitement in the neighborhood is
intense, and search is being male in ev
ery direction for the perpetrator of the
dime. If be ie caught he will probably
be lynched.
Atlanta, Ga., Ootober 21—T. L.
Brsntly, marshal oi Whiteeburg, Go.,
shot and killed two negro girls last Sat
urday night. The murder was wanton
and unprovoked. Brantly escaped, and

of the State of Tennessee against James
M. Davis came up for argument in the
United States Supreme Court ti>day,
upon a division in the United State-
Circuit Court for the middio d strict of
Tennessee. Davis, who is a deputy col
lector of internal revenue, was indicted

market-Houghton Meeting wss won by
Lord Soseberry’s fonr-yeir-old bay filly,

and Mr. Grawford’s three -year-old
chestnut filly. Oat of Bounds, third.
The betting just before the race was
thirty to one against Ira .Merveille, fifty
tocne against Caxtoman, and twenty to
one aga rat Out of Bounds. Thirty-one
hireee ran. Mr. Nsylor’e three-year-old
chestnut colt. LeoviiJe, was a favorite in

mayor and both branches of the oity
counoil ’ikes place to-morrow. The cam
paign whioh closed to-night has been
mere active and tbe canvass more thor
ough than in any municipal contest for a
number or years. Tbe candidates for
mayor are Gen. F. C. Latrobe, tho pres
ent incumbent, (Dem.,) W. J. Hooper.

The second raoe for the Dixie stakes,
for two-year-olds, was the event of the
diy. The terms were : two-mile dash
with $100 entrance fee and $500 forfeit.
The prize was $1,500; $1,0C0 to first
horse, $500 to second, and the thud to
save his stake. Tne starlera were Au-
dax. Hi o d, Monitor, Rcohester, and
Lord Mnrpcy. In tbe pools Lord Mur
phy had tne call at $1,200, while G. L>-
n'lard’s entries, Harold and Monitor,
sold for eight doHars, and (the field for
seventy dollars.
A good start, with Monit or first, fol
lowed by Harold, Rochester, Lord Mnr-
tihy and Andax in the order named.
