The Kate Thayer Concert Company
were greeted by an ov erflowing audience.
They presented tlie finest programme of
any conceit troupe ever billed in this dty.
The people are in ecstacy over it.
The Xew York Graphic says: Miss
Kale Thayer appeared before one of tlie
largost audiences of this year, and al
though the hall is one which, from its
sire.'tests to the utmost the power of a
vocalist, she succeeded in filling it admi
rably with her wonderftt! voice.
The Boston Globe speaks as follows:
Music Hall was the scene of the Kate
Thayer concert last evening. The artists
were very warmly received, the selections
were most pleasing in character, and in
every instance the members were encored.

Anyone visiting this store will be struck
with the many and important changes
which have been made in the establish
ment. The wall on one entire side has
been closely fitted with neat shelving, and
the centre of the long apartment also has
been provided with stands for the proper
display of the proprietor's goods. Other
improcemnts. too, have been instituted,
which transform the premises into one of
the most extensive and attractive stores in
the State.
Mr. Burr, in addition to his stoves of
all patterns, including the "Farmers'
Girl.” which stands almost without a rival
and every article and cooking utensil
that can be called for by the housekeeper,
has greatly extended his cooking depart
ment, and now oflfers to the public any
thing that can he desired in that line from
the common C. C. ware to the choicest
china dinner and tea sets, fancy cups and
tram vases, flower pots, glass-ware,
lamps of all styles and the latest inven
tion, and a thousand other articles too te
dious to mention.
He has also on hand a magnificent dis
play of plated goods, pocket and table cut-
leiy.razors and razor straps, granite kitch
en ware, which is every day becoming more
popular, an.l indeed, everything that a
tasty housekeeper can ask for.
Those wishing to purchase cheap and
pretty Christmas presents, should call

How it Will Be Arranged for Hacon-
Location of the Bowes and Other
Particulars.
There is no more interesting subject to
the Macon public just now than that of
the free delivery system, soon to be estab
lished in this city. Yesterday in an inter
view with Mr. A. E. Seifert, the assistant
Postmaster, we learned that the free de
livery will be inaugurated on tlie first of
January. This information was received
yesterday from the Postmaster General by
telegraph. This arrangement by which
the much to lie desired free delivery is to
be given to our city, is very gratifying to
our people.
In his recent visit to Macon, Mr. S. A.
Wilson, a special agent of the post-office
department connected with the free deliv
ery bureau made a thorough survey of the
ground and was very favorably impressed
with the appearance and general prosper
ity of tlie city. He was surprised to find
so large a city and went away fully satis
fied that the Postmaster General s award
of free delivery to Macon was well de
served. The district* of tlie city were ar
ranged.
Tlie advantages of tlie delivery system
will not tic confined to the corporate lim
its, but several of tlie populous suburbs
will also be allowed its benefits. The
service will extend as far as Wilkinson s
house on Bassett's lull in a southerly di
rection from the city J Gilesville in the
same direction will bo included. Vinc-
ville, as far as Pin Nono College, will lie
served, aud East Macon, to a point some-
distance beyond the corporation line.
Forty-five boxes for the reception of
inatter to be mailed will lie located at dif
ferent points. They will be of cast-iron,
furnished by the government, and secure
ly fastened to lamp posts or to fences.
Printed schedules of the hours at which
tlie mail matter deposited in the boxes will
be taken out will be attached to each box.
Those in the outskirts and residence por
tion of the city, except in a few instances,
will be smaller than those in the business
centres. Tlwir locations will be as fol
lows: At Wilkinson's store, on Bassett’s
Hill; by the Mission church, in Gilesville;
Daly's store, ohl Houston road; Bounda
ry street, near Colonel Aderliold’s resi
dence; South Macon cotton factory; Mercer
University; intersection Vinevillc roads
with Washington and Georgia avenues;
Colonel Henry J. Lamar’s residence,
Vineville; Chase’s store near City Hospi
tal; corner Bond and College streets;
Washington avenue and College street:
Georgia avenue and Orange street; Mount
de Sales, Orange and Columbus streets;
Johnson and College streets; Calhoun
anil Hazel streets; Sparks and Hazel
streets, near the residence of Colonel J.
II. Blount; South Macon Grammar school;
Troup and Hazel streets; Fourth and
Oglethorpe; Macon and Brunswick rail
road office; Macon and Western railroad
office; comer Oak and Third; Oak and
First; intersection Spring, Pine aud Cot
ton avenue; Brown House comer; Blind
Academy; City Hall; Fourth and
Poplar streets, Third and Poplar at
llasdal’s comer; Second and Poplar;
Washington Avenue and Spring street;
Orange street and Georgia Avenue at
Judge Holt’s; Cherry street and Cotton
Avenue; TKi.Kor.Arir and Messenger
corner; Ualston Hall comer; Cherry and
Fourth streets; Third and Mulberry;
Fourth [and Mulberry; Spring and Wal
nut; Walnut andFifth;Nelson’s store,Clin
ton road; one on tlie Milledgcville, and
one on the Jones county road.
The districts as now arranged, nearly
corresponds with the wards of the city.
Tlie delivery of mail inatter will be
about as follows: Before eight o’clock a
business delivery will be made in the cen
ter of tlie dty, and after the Savannah
mails arrive a general delivery all over
tlie city will lie made. A midday delive
ry of local, mail will next occur, of the
matter dropped in tlie mall boxes, and a
business delivery at 0 o'clock In the eve
ning. These hours are based on the
present schedules of the railroads center
ing here, and are of course subject to mod
ification and change. One great conve
nience will lie, tlie carriers will take
a supply of stamps with tltcm on their
rontes.
The only change in the rates of postage
is two cents must lie placed on all dropped
letters instead of one. This change will
hardly be felt by tlie people, but will ena
ble tlie department to get hack in part
wliat is lost in tlie lessened box rent.
To fully enjoy the advantages of the
free delivery system, to insure promptness
aud accuracy, it is absolutely necessary
that the houses of the city be numbered,
and wc hope tlie matter will be attended to
at once. The subject was brought up at
tlio last meeting of the City Council, and
referred to a committee, which will report
at the next meeting of the body. It is
probable the city will have the number
of the houses determined, aud each prop
erty owner will be required to have the
number placed upon his liouse. This
will involve but small expense.
Tlie department encourages the free de
liver}' of mail matter and discontinuance
of tlie box renting system. It is the in
tention to make the interests of the people
and government reciprocal.
Postmaster Glover aud his] assistant,
Mr. Seifert, are anxious to make the de
livery In Macon a success from the first,
and are sparing no effort looking to that
end. We hope they will have the hearty
cooperation and assistance of all in the
numbering of houses, and "reporting any
neglect or delay in the delivery of letters'!
The Burge 3ary.
Tlie jury which retired on the Burge
case, were still hung at two o’clock this
morning, and a mistrial seems inevitable.
It is understood the jury stands ton for ae-

The Fire oil Third Street.
The fire on Third street, in the store of
Mr. R. S. Wynn yesterday morning,
promised at one time to be a serious
one. It was located in one of the most
important parts of tlie city and, had it
gained headway, would have endangered
a very large amount of property. In the
adjoining warehouse of Messrs. Flanders
were about a thousand bales of cottoi\.
Tlie extinguishment of the flames reflect
ed credit on the firemen and the depart
ment.
Tlie tire was evidently tlie work of an in
cendiary. Tlie smoke rose rapidly through
the house and filled it densely. In the
upper story Mr. Charles Wynn slept. The
flames were on the stairway, and he was
forced to make liis exit from the front
windows. Water and removal damaged
tlie stocks of Mr. Wynn, groceries, and
Mr. Morris Elkan, dry goods, quite seri
ously.
Mr. Wynn was insured for $0,000, one
thousand with Captain W. W. Carnes in
the Hartford; four thousand with Jewett
& Rogers: one thousand in the Commer
cial Union; one thousand in the London
Assurance ; two thousand in the Lynch
burg, Virginia, Company, and one thou
sand with the Conner Brothers in the
Scottish Commercial.
Mr. Elkan was injured for four thou
sand dollars on the Underwriters with
Captain Carnes.
Both stocks are badly damaged, partic
ularly Sir. Wynn’s and both covered by
insurance.
Tlie building was insured with Messrs.
Turpin and Ogden, in the Imperial and
Xortliem of London, and the Phenix of
Xew York for fifteen hundred dollars in
each. The damage to tlie building will
hardly exceed three hundred dollars.

But I am Determined to Do It
We shall this season introduce a novel feature to the
citizens of M aeon. In every department of our business
we shall offer goods*which arc positively worth
Two, Three, Four, and Even Five Times
the price we shall ask,
It is a principle with us never to advertise a sale unless
we have something really desirable to sell. We Keep in
mind the old story of the shepherd’s boy, who in malioions
sport, frequently alarmed the village by his cry of
‘‘THE WOLF, THE WOLF!”
The villagers ran to his assistance only to find them
selves deceived; so they resolved to pay no more atten
tion to the boy’s alarm, But one day the wolf really did
then the boy cried out in earnest but no heed was
given to Ms cries, and the wolf quietly devoured the sheep.
Now just as the villagers acted towards the boy so a<>
our people act towards those merchants, who cry out
‘‘BARGAINS. BARGAINS,”
when, in fact, they have no bargains.
We believe it a false policy, and it is only because we
know that we present decided inducements, that we urge
upon onr people to inspect the goods advertised below.
Please take note of the following : Our entire stock
will, be arranged in sections and so displayed that our
customers will be enabled to select a Present suitable for
old or young, at any price from
$^=>Five Cents to Ten Dollars,
without the inconvenience of looking over the entire
stock. For instance, one section will contain articles for
One Dollar, as shown by card.
