fiir audience assembled last evening, at

dramatic merit and was decidedly

Business Prospect^.
ffe have been much gratified of late at the in-
cfEa.-ing
prospnc 1 of business in our city.
Our
. r?eS are fast filling np with shipping, and
,t r arrival and departure of steamers give
•he daily -
j pleasing appearance to onr water front,
jerehants
Our
are now supplied with fine stocks of
. ID all the leading articles of trade. The
4 1 lines of communication with other por-
*' of t he State are being rapidly repaired, and
llC “ jacreased facilities for moving cotton and
"‘‘.'a produce to our city, we expect in a few
J .h, to fee a much augmented and rapidly
“lag business transacted in our midst.
Savannah now presents advantages • fer the
. ment c f produce unequalled by any other
sjaihern port this sido of New 0rleaDS > bicn S in
", ( (jjUy oommunioation with the North by
‘ class steamships and sailing vessels. This
Vraatage can be greatly strengthened by a more
*^,1 spirit on the part of the owners of the
^rcr steamers and such a reduction of the tariff
;‘ f Tites c ( freight as will induce the merchants
; other portions of the State to visit our
•V ard lay in heavy supplies of goods for trade
0 f their sections-
la this connection we would again call the at
tention of wharf owners to the condition of the
*harves, many of which are scarcely fit to be
designated by such a name. Any improvement
: a Ibi , respect will well repay the outlay and
a ! r d increased facilities to merchants and others
interested in them. This work should be seen to
at coco S3 there is no time for delay. Onr fall
badness has commenced, and there will be little
time to spare to the repair of our wharves.
Uin Raiuoads—We arepieasedto announce
that communication with Augusta by railroad,
and thence to Atlanta, has been resumed. By
an advertisement in our paper it will be seen
that the cars are now running to Station 4A a "
ou the Central Railroad, at which point it con
nects with a line of hacks to Waynesboro. By
this line passengers leaving Savannah one mom
ma arrive in Augusta in time to get breakfast
and connect with the Georgia Railroad train for
Atlanta.
The Atlantic A Gulf Railroad has also made an
arrangement by which passengers and freight
!rem Savannah will be transported to Doctor-
tuwn m connection with their road to Thomas-
■. no and intermediate stations
Drowskii.—Yesterday while Strobha r’s
iiat was coming down the Savannah river,
a! a point opposite to Stile's landing, a
colored man named George, from Liberty
county, unfortunately steppetToverboard, and
not being able to swim was drowned. It ap
pears that he had been employed on the boat,
and every effort was made to rescue him from
his peril, but without avail.
Imi’Kovemests.—We notice with pleasure
that workmen are engaged in rebuilding and
repairing the building at the corner of Whita
ker street and Bay Lane, formerly occupied
by Mr. Oliver as a paint and oil store, and
destroyed by fire some time since. These im-
; r ivements are an evidence of the steady in-
ertise of business in our city.
mi WeatueR.—Quite an agreeable change
tank place in the weather yesterday. A fine
breeze from the Eastward sprung up early in the
cry and continued up to the time of closing onr
-part. The change is rather sudden after the
intense heat from which wo have been suffering
t't sometime past, but we hope no ill effects may
vts experienced therefrom. The thermometer
during the day ranged as follows : 7 a. m., 80; 12
- • 13:p. in., 82.
''ESEttAL Order No. 18.—The attention of
