SAVANNAH DAILY REPUBLICAN. WEDNESDAY MORNING. OCTOBER 4. 1865.
POETRY
THE RIVER.
BV ED WARP P. NOWELL.
The river, the river, the fleet-flowing river,
Dancing and eddying the green margin between;
I love its transitions, its bright rippling shiver,
ecintillating the gems of a sweet starry sheen.
For a^es its tide has familiarly ventured
The lips ol its ledge-love confiding to kiss;
Its aftection transcendent the cliffs has indentured,
And a tryst wrought in that place, a temple in this.
Forever thou’rt old, yet how fresh in thy grace,
oh thnn stream so resnlendent,—with fairness r
Oh, thou stream so resplendent,
The fan-tea’i ween, love to mirror their faces
lossed glory, when by moonlight they
Within thy
meet.
A lesson thou teachest, Oh! beautiful river!
To mankind gashed by the prow of many a craft.
And pierced by the dulls from the storm’s vengeful
quiver.—
Yet enduring, thou art proof ’gainst the stab and the
shaft!
Thus pain may assail and keen anguish afflict us;
But the storm is dispersed and the stream sees the
skies; —
So we may look np, and most lofty of victors,
View Elysium reflected in our sorrowless eyes!
Boston Traveler.
The Andersonville Postoffice.
No blanket round his wasted limbs,
Under the rainy sky he slept;
While pointing his envenomed shafts.
Around him, Death, the archer, crept.
He dreamed of hunger, and held out
His hand to clutch a little bread—
That a white angel with a torch,
Amonr the living and the dead.
Seemed bearing,, smiling as he went;
The vision waked him, as he spied
The post-boy, followed by a crowd
Or famished prisoners, who cned
For letters—letters Irom their iriends;
Crawling upon his hands and knees.
He hears his own name called, and lo!
A letter from his wife he sees!
Gasping for breath, he shrieked aloud,
And lost in nature’s blind eclipse,
Faltering amid the suppliant crowd,
Caught it and pressd it to his lips,
A guard whojollowed, red and wroth,
And flourishing a rusty brand.
Reviled him with a taunting oath,
And snatched the letter from his hands.
“First pay the postage, wbiningwretch !”
Despair had made the prisoner brave,
“Then give me back my money, sir!
I am a captive—not a slave!
Yon took mv money and my clothes;
Take my life too—but let me know
How Mary and the children are.
And I will bless you ere I go."
The very moonlight through his hands,
As he stood supplicating, shone,
And his sharp features shaped themselves
Into a prayer, and such a tone
Ol anguish there was in his cry
For wife and children, that the gnard -
Thinking upon his own—passed by.
And he left him swooning on the sward.
Beyond the “dead line” fell his head—
The eager sentinel drew his mark.
And with a crash the bullet sped
Into his brain, and all was dark.
But when they turned his livid cheek
Up toward the light, the pale lips smiled
Kissing a picture fair and meek
That held in either hand a child.
