VEiVilESSAY MORNING, OCT. 18th.
■ • .... military HUttry-
We publish ouoor first page this morn
ing a very lengthy account of “The
First Campaign of the West,” embracing
all'the official correspondence between
Generals McClellan, Buell and
President Tdmxfin. The document
though yolnminoiffiL ^ quite interesting,
and reveals many important facts that
have not heretofore been made public.
As a scrap of military history, it will be
found worthy of careful perusal, the facts
therein contained settling many points
previously disputed. By this exposition
an entirely different phase is placed on
this great military controversy, so often
spiritedly discussed through the columns
of the public press.
Interesting Correspondence-
The managers of the Theatre Generously
Tender a Complimentary Benefit
** to the “Metropolitans.”
LET THE BENEFIT BE A BUMPER.
We publish below the correspondence
that has passed between Messrs. Ray
mond & Hamilton, the popular managers
of the excellent dramatic troupe now per
forming at the Athenaeum, and Mr. Jas.
Stewart, President of the “Metropoli
tans
Sxvanxah Theatre, Oct. 17th, 1365.
Mr. James Stewart,
President Metropolitan Eire Co:
Sir: Informed of the exertions being suds by
jour Compan}, for the purpose of supplying them
selves with a'stesm fire Engine, we are desirous c*
aiding to the extant of our means in assisting
you in your efforts. If a “Benefit” at our Theatre
will be acceptable, we shall be pleased to devote
the evening of Friday, October 20th to that pur
pose, feeling assured that an appeal for so worth;
an object will meet with a hearty response from
%e liberal public of this city.
Yours, with respect,
Raymond <t Hamilton.
Savannah, Oct. 17, I860.
Messrs. Raymond A Hamilyon, Managers:
Gentlemen: Your note of this date, tendering
Co , has been received. Til ’their'name ’Faocept
with thanks your kind and liberal offer, fully sat
isfied that the public will respond generously.
Very respectfully,
Jamk8 Stewart,
President Metropolitan Fire Co.
It is hardly necessary for us to attempt
to urge our citizens to turn out en masse
and attend the theatre, for we feel assured
that the meritorious object for which the
benefit is to be given, will appeal strong
enough to the generosity of our public
spirited citizens without any further no
tice at our bands. Let those who are un
able to attend, purchase a ticket, and
thereby enable the “Metropolitans” to
realize a sufficient sum to complete the
purchase of their new steam engine.—
Five years ago, before the desolation of
war had impoverished the South, the
young gentlemen comprising this select
volunteer fire company, were possessed
of ample means to have purchased several
fire engines, and this earnest desire on
their part to become, not only ornaments,
but useful members of society, is most
commendable, and cannot fail to receive
that substantial encouragement which
all good enterprises require to ensure
perfect success.
Let it not be said that a well organized
body of young gentlemen, who were
willing to devote their time, services, and
if need be, their lives in defence of the
homes of our citizens from the devouring
element, failed in their laudable efforts
through the indifference or lukewarm
support of our people. ■ We want a
Steam Fire Engine Company, and the
“MetropolitaIls , ’ are the right kind of re
liable men to be entrusted with a valua
ble machine. Let every inch of standing
room be occupied on Friday night, so
that while witnessing “London Assu
rance” and “Lady Gay Spanker,” we
Bhall be giving Savannah assurance, by a
spanking gay audience in behalf of a
most deserving enterprise.
r Tickets for the grand Complimentary
Testimonial to the “Metropolitans," can
be purchased at W. W. Lincoln’s Drug
Store, J. -O, Schreiner & Sons’ Music
store, Pulaski House, Marshall House
and at the Republican office.
