Perseverance and its Reward . —The man ‘what’
rolled the wheelbarrow over the plains, to
California, two years ago, arrived at the mint,
at this place, last week, with $6,000 of the
“dust’’ which he had made in the “placers,”
aud now has purchased a beautiful farm, and
is prepared, as soon as he gets a family, to
enjoy life, if a home make one so. No man,
of this or any other nation, would have
thought of rolling a wheelbarrow 3000 miles,
except Sanford, of Stonnington, Conn, who,
in 1829, built a small yacht, of one ton
burthern, and set sail from port, with his
custom house papers, all in legal form, and
arrived safely in the Thames, and was imme
d.ately arres'.ed and carried before the Admi
ralty, where he produced his papers and de
manded to be released. His manifest was
curious enough, and completely astonished
the British officers. It ran thus !
John Sanford, Mate; do Cook; do Steward,
and Seamen, &c. He was captain crew and
all.
Sir Hans Sloane was so much pleased with
his indomitable perseverance and daring, that
he gave him a public dinner, and sent him
home with'many presents. These two cases
are characteristic of the American people,
aud point to the time when they will rule the
world.— Mountain Signal.
In common with our contemporaries
throughout the Union we have been reques
ted to state that Mrs. Mary Bowen, wife of
tho late Rev. James Bowen, of Mount Car
mel, Illinois is in great distress on account of
the absence of her son Francis Bowen. No
tidings can be heard from him, although
friends have been written to in all directions.
His poor mother, now on the very borders of
the grave, would be greatly relieved to hear
of cr from him. Most of his relatives think
him deceased.
A correspondent of the Columbus Enquirer ,
writing from Milledgeville says :—“1 was
very much amused not long since in a meet
ing a "decided character. 5 ’ He hai.ed from
Cherokee and lacked several things of being
a tool. He seemed to run on Mr. Inombs.
Among other remarks he said that Toombs
was the most popular man with the crack
ed heel warhoo-democrats of the up-country,
ot any in the State—and gave it as his opin
ion that he could out speak a campmeeting,
with seventeen associations and four protract
ed meetings thrown in. 55
Hon, Robert Toombs.
The election of this gifted Statesman to the
Senate occasioned no little stir in the South
ern Rights camp, and we were not in the
least surprised (says the LaGrange Reporter ,)
that Horace Greely seized the opportunity to
disgorge his venom.
Mr. Toombs is hated by all the disciples of
Seward, as the devil hates holy water. For
this, there is no assignable reason excepting
his unrelenting hosti ity to their abolition
views.
Mr. Toombs is an orator of the Demos'he
nian stamp —direct and forcible in his style.
He is also profoundly skilled in constitution
al learning and we know he is destined to
win fresh laurels in the Senate chamber.
The Mutiny on th* Suit Challenge.-
The New York Commercial Advertiser pub
lish s the following extract of a letter receiv
ed from Capt. Waterman of the ship Challenge,
dated
San Fbancisco, October 30, 1851.
"Your letter of September 12th, I found on
my arrival. I hive had one of the most dis
agreeable passages that ever I experienced,
and am entirely used up. Only think, 108
days! I am just now under great excite
ment, as there is a mob looking for me and the
mate, on account of stories told by the crew
of our having murdered ten men on the pas
sage.
"The truth is this. When in the neighbor
hood of Rio, about fifty of the crew fell upon
the mate, with the intention of killing him !
and afterwards me, by their own confession, j
I was on the poop, taking the sun, near noon ; j
tho mate was/forward by the galley. They
had stabbed him and beat him shockingly be
fore I could get to him. I found a marlin
spike close to him, and with it knocked down
three of them, rescued the mate, and quelled
the mutiny. I had to flog eight; and so it
ended.
"Off Cape Horn, three mm fell from the
mizzen topsail yard ; one was drowned, and
two ot them killed. After a few weeks, five
men died of dysentery, and one of convul
sions, a boy from .Bridgeport. They have
spread reports here that I threw them over
board and killed them.”
A letter from one of the seamen on board
the Challenge corroborates the statements
given in the above letter. The crew consist
ed of fifty-six men, of whom only ten were
Americans.
The Hazauds ojf Mehcantile Life —It is
asserted that but one eminent merchant (and
his death is still recent and lamented) has
ever continued in active business in the city
of New York to the close of a long life with
out undergoing bankruptcy,or a suspension
ot payment, in some one ot the various crises
through which the country has necessarily
passed.
It i« also asserted by reliable authority,
from records kept during periods of twenty to
forty years, that of every hundred persons
who coinmenee business in Boston, 95 at
least die poor that ot the same number in New
York, no too ultimately acquire wealth after
passing through the intermediate process of
bankruptcy ; r/hile in Philadelphia the pro
portion is still smaller.
The Last and, Greatest Achievement of Morse’s
Telegraph.— Elam Alexander, Esq., the able
and energetic President of the Washington
and New Orleans Telegraph Company, whose
line of wire, hy a based line from the Wash
ington and New York Magnetic Telegraph
Company, now extends from New York to
New Orleans, writes a despatch, dated 3d in
stant, from New York, as follows : “We are
this day working our line for the first time
direct from this city to New Orleans, and
are receiving instant replies to our messages.”
This long line of Telegraph, on Tuesday,
sent and received messages to and from each
terminus with as much ease as though it
were only to and from Philadelphia or Bos
ton. At twelve o’clock a message of thirty
four words, addressed to the New Orleans
Picayune, was sent from the office in New
York direct, and an answer was returned in
less than five minutes The distance between
New York and New Orleans by telegraph is
over nineteen hundred miles.
