CHRONICLE AND SENTINEL,
JHrßcellanp
LIFE.
IT UllT COWWALt.
If life be ever pleaeast,
‘Tie in merry hoars like this,
When the wine ie old and eonod,
And the laugh ie running round;
When each maiden month dieeloeee
Bade of pearl in beda of roaea,
Roaea that we fain would kiee.
If life be ever gloomy,
’Tie aa when we, long ago,
Saw the friend welored bo well
Swiftly borne to debtor*a cell;
And not one of oa could lend him
Gold or eilrer, or befriend him;
Scarce had time to aoothe hie wo.
Ah 1 life hae many changes.
Sunny seasons, winter rains:
So let'a pluck the summer flower,
Bravely front the frowning hour,
Cherish all who’d fain befriend us,
Whether good or ill attend us,
Long as life remains.
From the Memphis Eagle.
NOVEMBER.
When the leaves
Grew crisp and fell amid November's wrecks,
A mother ahelt'r ngin ber bosoms’a folds,
A bright, frail cherub, o’er tbe pathless sea
Trembling, yet hopeful, went to seek the shores
Os a green island, whose salubrious airs
Faith whispered, might res'ore to those young limbs
Their lightness and their strength.
Upon the deck
She led bis feeble steps, and her full beer:
Grew stronger, when she heud again bis shout
Os laughter, as she watched tbe vrriite-plumed waves
Follow the proud ship like an armed host
Their faithful leader. Hour by hour she sat
Reading eath change on that pale thoughtful face,
So infantile, yet full of intellect, —
Answering bis questions of tbe r borelesa sea,
I’i e fl >under>ng porpoise, and sea ne't'es strange,
f*r, brushing hack tbe dark and glossy hair
From h : 8 fair temples, trembled with delight
As the frrsb sea breeze t rougbt the bright blood back
To Lis young cheek.
They reached a southern isle
That blossoms in the waters, like a bright
Mosaic picture set in rarphire pure.
She led him ’inrng its fragrant orange groves
And blight pomegranate treea, and by tbe sen
To gather sh lls, er listen, awed, yet pleased,
As ibe grand orches'rr of waves sent up
Noture's ‘Te Deum’ to tbe throne of God.
The fiir cheek crimsoned—the large mournful eyes
Gew brighter, and w ; th many yearning hoper
Known only to a mother, she retraced
Her homeward way.
The Wild Ncvenf'er winds
Are sobbing m the woodlands one again
Tho fl >wers are dead, —the crisp and withered
leaves
Rustle like frightened things across tbe ruths; —
Th-i trees, whese verdure in the summertime
Swaveti gently, I ke a glorious veil, revealing
Glimpses of heaven's fa r face are leafless now,
Amt tire dull leaden sky troks coldly down.
Ttscbjug the thoughtful, they must look beyond
A realm so cbingcful, fir enduriug light
Anti «ki s where ternpssts coma not.
Crouching low,
Nor hced-ng the wild wind, f r o’er her tiemt
Sws pest a keener blast,—imploring strength
Fr. m r.eiven, to bear her wo, a mother weeps
Reside a little grave. ANNIE.
A Quaker Wedding.
Married in this city yesterday, at the Quaker Meet
ing-House in Fifth street, Mu Henry Shipley ,
of this city, to Miss Hauah D. Taylor, of New
port-
A large company assembled at the unosten
tatious church of the Society of Friends yes
terday at eleven o’clock; to witness so unu
sual an occurrence as a Quaker wedding.
As the spirit moved up to be present, we
propose to give a description of the ceremony.
It was a regular monthly meeting of the «
Friends, a small though highly respectable
society worshipping regularly at the house 1
above mentioned. When we arrived the
church was nearly filled with young ladies,
occupying seats on the opposite side es the
house, and fronting the main audience. The
broad brims slipped quietly into the seats in
the men's division of the house, and com
menced their silent communion with their
spirits and the spirits of the unseen world. ,
After half an hour’s profound Bilence, there
was some appearance of uneasiness among
the spectators. We were amused at a whis
pered conversation between a country girl
and her more knowing city companion.
"What do these women wear such bonnets
for ? They look like half hornets nest half
coal scuttle.’ 5
"Hush ! that’s t the Quaker fashion.”
"Where is the pulpit ?” said the first men
tioned.
"The Quakers have no pulpits.”
"Where is the minister?”
"They have no minister.”
"Who preaches, then ?”
"All of them, or any of them, just as they
happen to feel.”
"Why don’t begin ?”
"Hush up—the meeting has begun this
half hour”.
"Why nobody has said a word, and those
men have got their hats on.”
"Never mind, somebody will speak soon,
provided the spirit moves them ; and they al
ways wear their hats in church.’ 5
"O ! I know they are yraiting for the bride
and groom.”
"No, indeed ; they have been here half an
hour ; don’t you see them sitting directly op
posite that handsome young man with gold
specs, and the lady beside him, dressed in
white satin ?”
"I want to know if that's them ; they don’t
look Quakerish a bit. I should like to know
who’s going to marry them ?”
"Nobody—they'll marry themselves.”
‘•Marry themselves ! Well, why in the
world don’t they begin ? What are they wait
ing for ?”
"Waiting for the spirit to move.’
Another half hour was passed in solemn
silence, at the end of which time the bride
and bridegroom rose, facing the audience, the
bridegroom pronouncing the following words ;
"I, in the presence of God, and ot this as
sembly, take this woman to be my wedded
wife, promising, with divine assistance, to be
to her a faithful and loving husband, as long
we both shall live.”
The bride, then, in a voice’somewhat falter
ing, repeated a similar declaration, and both
sat down. Two young men of the society
then placed before them a small table contain
ing a huge parchment scroll, which the open
ed, and in presence of the assembly, the
bride and groom affixed their signatures. An
der of the church then read the document
aloud to the audience. It set forth that the
parties had at a regular monthly meeting prece
ding signified their intention of marriage; that
the society approved of the same, and that
they by their joint declarations and signatures
arrived at a "lull accomplishment of their in
tentions.” He then stated that all the Friends
wtie invited to sign as w tneeses af'er the
close of the meeting. After a few minutes
more of silence the ne«.> married couple
suddenly rose and left the chuich, and were
followed by the whole congregation. The
audience was well pleased with the ceremony,
which we think was the most sensible we ev
er witnessed.
Hog Thaoc tue uu.ci mati Commercial
of Fr.day says—
We stated a few days since, that the hogs
slaughtered this season would reach to almost
£OO.OOO. It is now thought by those who
are booked up in our pork affairs, that the
1 umber killed will go beyond that figure. We
i ever saw better hogs than those now coming
o market.

SANDS’ SARSAPARILLA
IN QUART BOTTLES,
FOR PURIFYING The BLOOD, and
for the cure of Scrofula, Mercurial diseas
es, Rheumatism, Cutaneous Eruptions, Stubborn
Ulcers, Liver Complaints, Dyspepsia, Bronchitis,
Salt Rheum. Consumption, Fever Sores, Female
Complaints, Erysipelas, Loss of appetite, Pim
ples, Biles, General Debility,&c.
This preparation has now borne the test of over
14 years’ experience, since its first introduction
to public favor, during which t : mc numerous imi
tations have sprunginto existence, founding their
claims to the confidence of the community on
the curative powers contained in Sarsaparilla
Root, the great reputation and extended use of
which has been mainly attributable to the many
wonderful cures effected by the use of this prep
aration. While Sarsaparilla root forms an impor
tant part of its combination, it is, at the same time
compounded with oiher vegetable remedies of
great power, and it is in the peculiar combina
tion and scientific manner of its preparation , that
its remarks de success in the cure of disease de
pends. Other preparations imitate it in the style
of putting up and in bearing the name of one ol
its ingredients, and here ends their resemblance
to it. Those needing a remedy and purifier like
this, are requested to note where this difference
exists, and in making choice ol what they wiil
use, not to take any other but that one
to their confidence, from the long list of
has effected on living witnesses, whose testimoni
als and residences have been published, and who
are still bearii g daily testimony to its wrth. The
whole history of mediciue has scarcely furnished
a parallel to the numerous and remarkable cute*
effected by its use, and what it has effected once
it can effect again.
FROM KENTUCKY.
INFLAMMATORY RHEUMATISM CURED.
Bakdstown, Ky., J jly 10,1849.
Messrs Sands—Gentlemen : It is my duty to
communicate facts in relation to the beneficial
effects of your Sarsaparilla. > y wife was af
flicted -with inflammation and soreness of the
stomach of the worst character ; her limbs were
much swollen ; slie had constant headache, and
ast spring was attacked severely wi h luff imma
tory Rheumatism. Tbe best medical aid wo
could obtain afforded only momentary relief atd
while in this situation, she heard oi the many re
markable cures effected by the use of Sands'
Sarsaparilla and commenced its use, which pro
duced instant relief, and less th n six bottles on
tiiely removed all the dropsical swelling and ev
ery other inflammatory symptom, restor-ug her
to perfect health. I send this statement as an act
,of justice, believing it to be my duty to encour
age the suffering portion of the human family to
use Sands’Sarsaparilla, which 1 believe has no
parralel in the catalogue of medicine With feel
ings of lasting gratitude, 1 remain your riend.
Samuel P. Harqkr.
Read the following from
New Orleans. Nov. 12,18(9.
Messrs Sands.—Gentleman : 1 take the liberty
of sending a letter which mav be of importance
to those who arc suffering as I have done. I re
ceived great benefit from your Sarsparilla, having
been cured of a malady after suffering six years.
1 hereby cheerfully certify to the good effect of
your medicine, and I hope God will reward you
for all tho good you have done. A chronic cough
hud tormented me day and night, and repeated at
tacks of fever induced ine to believe that I should
die with consumption. One day, while suffering
a violent attack of burning fever, a 'riend persua
ded me to try your incomparable medicine, but to
tell the truth, 1 had no confidence in it. 1 finally
purchased a bottle, and by its use, and th". help of
God, 1 was restored to better health than 1 had
enjoyed for sir years. 1 cannot but bless the au
thor of this admirable medicine.
With great respect. I am, gentleman,
Your obedient ervant,
FERMIN GROUPAZ.
‘‘TRUTH IS STRANGFR TIL\N FICTION”
New Durham, N. J., June 30, IS 10.
Messrs. Sands—Gentleman : My wife suftVred
with a distress and burning in her chest for many
years, and my daughter was afflicted Irom her
birth with a humor in the Hood. We consulted
various physicians, and tried numerous icmedies,
without much benefit, until we heard, through
Rev. Thomas Davis. o f the great medicinal valuo
ot Sands Hai sapariila. On his recommendation my
wife and daughter decided on tr) ing it, and soon
experienced permanent benefit. My daughter’s
skill assumed a new appearance entirelv ; from
being rough, hard and scaly, it became smooth and
soft. My wifessufferings aie almoat gone, and it*
use a short time longer, it is my firm belief, will
produce a perfect cure.
