Synod of lowa, b. i two-thirds vote, re
versed this seuier. -e, and restored him
to his former standing in the Church.—
The ease, on the complaint of the Pres
bytery, was then brought up before the
Assembly at Chicago, and after a* thor

ing of all the arguments offered pro and
con the question was put to vote on t'ri

Rev. Mr. Shields and his wife are by
this vote declared guilty of adultery in
the Presbyterian Church pointed view.
Legally it does not effect their standing
in the leas’; they are still, by the laws
of lowa, man and wife, and there is no
doubt but that she was regularly di
vorced and for what is generally ac
knowledged as sufficient grounds. It
simply shows that the Presbyterian
Church claims that divorces cannot be
granted unless adultery lie clearly
shown, and that any one marrying a
person divorced for any other cause, is
himself guilty of adultery in a moral
view of the case.
