Northern Travel—Central Route.
Editor Dispatch :—Allow me a cor
ner in your paper to say a word in reply
tv* an article which appeared in the
Chronicle. Sc Sentinel Saturday morning, in
which some novel intimations were
thrown out in reference to the Upper
Koute North, via Columbia and Char
lotte. While it is very gratifying to
observe the tacit admission of the edi
tor of that paper, that the travel has
been diverted from its old channel via
Wilmington, it looks a little strange
that he should attribute the change to
the “plausibility of drummers;” for
certainly no device has been wanting,
by the Agents of the lower route, to
place all the claims of their line before
the people, and to delude the public
into the belief that it is not inferior in
ail respects to tho “Central Line.”
In reply to the allusion of the cor
respondent of the Mail, in the same ar
ticle, in reference to the dust and the
eating houses of our road, permit me
to observe, that if the lower route has
been free from dust during the late dry
weather, it has enjoyed a very remarka
ble exemption ; and we do not think
the proprietors of the eating houses on
our route would fear to compare their
tables with those of their brethren of
the “cool and delightful piney woods.”
Thanking the editor for his very dis
interested compliment to the drummers
of the route I represent, I take the lib
erty to tender the assurance to the
traveling public, that nothing shall be
wanting in the accommodations and
comforts afforded, to cause a single re
gret that they have been induced by
the manifold advantages of our route
or by “the plausibility of its drum
mers," to abandon the swamps and dan
gerous trestles of the old line of travel.
Yours, and the public's
obedient servant,
, C. D. Hoyden.

Mr. Pentecost was a man of marked traits. He
was amiable and just, wiih a remarkable degree i
of friendship aud moral and physical courage—
the trait perhaps u ost conspicuous and most
rare was that he “ attended closely to his own
business, and let other people’s alone.” ,
It is the consolation of his surviving friends i
that “ God is merciful,” and his sudden death !
enforces the warning Re ye ready also.”

follow railroads as naturally as water runs down

IMi MACHINES TRIUMPHANT.
WE are continually hearing, from!
reliable sources, that the Agents of some
high-priced Saving Machines are crying down
our reasonable priced ones as humbugs: that!
they cannot be made to work, and that partiesj
who purchased ours have thrown them asidej
and bought theirs in many cases. Now', we de- •
nouncc each and all of these reports as false,!
from whatever source they come.
The truth is, these opposition gentlemen very
: well know that they must kill off our low-priced
Machines, or the enormous profit made on theirs
- will be exposed, much against their intent
: hence their laborious efforts to create the itn
. - lire.--.-.or. that our Machines are worthless hum
\ bugs.
n To satisfy the minds o! those who may desire
r to purchase, but have not tho opportunity of per
e sonally examining and deciding upon its merit!?,
we have taken occasion to call on a few who
have our Machines in use. for their true and can
did opinion o them. They have readily and
cheerfully responded, and lor the frank and pub
lie expression of their sentiments, we tender
them our host thunks, and assure them and oth
ers, who may be influenced thereby, that our
efforts shall ever be given to merit and retain
the good opinion therein expressed.

Augusta, August 12th, 1858.
Messrs. Hatch k Andrews— Gents: We are
- using your small sized Quaker City Sewing Ma
chines in our families, and they are giviDg per
fect satisfaction. We find them well adapted to
all kinds of sewing. They ruu much easier, and
from their simplicity, are easier managed and
, kept in order than the more complicated high
priced Machine, and we cheerfully recommend
all who are in want of the article, to call and sew
yours before paying from SIOO to $l5O for a Ma
chine which, in our estimation, is no better than
these cheap household assistants. We hail this
; Machine as a truly great invention, and the very
’ low price for which it is retailed, will soon place
it in almost every family in the land.
L. S. MORRIS,
b. w. mckinnon.
Beech Island, August 10th, 1858.
Messrs. Haigii & Andrews— Gents ; When in
your city, a few weeks ago, I purchased one ot
, your small size Quaker City Sewing Machines,
took it home, and without any instructions save
’ the printed one accompanying the Machine, com
menced working it, and find itcontinues to work
_ well, and gives entire satisfaction. I cheerfully
recommend your Machine to all who are about
to purchase this now almost indispensable arti
-1 cle ot household use.
SAM’L J. M. CLARKE.
F Augusta, August Utb, 1858.
e Messrs. Haigu & Andrews —Gents : I take
n pleasure In announcing to you that 1 be’ieve the
r Quaker City Sewing Machine, sold by you, is
equal to any in use, being well adapted to’either
coarse or fine sewing. I think all who purchase
one of your Machines, will consider their money
well spent, as my Machine is giving perfect sat
>■ isfaciion. L. C. SKINNER.
).
Messrs. Haigh & Andrews—You can use my
name in respect to the large size Quaker City
l- Sewing Machine, to suit yourselves. It has given
entire satisfaction in all respects.
E. E. THOMPSON
h Sand Hills, August 12th. 1858.
r - Messrs. Haigh & Andrews— Gents: I have had
one of your Quaker City Sewing Machines in use
in my family for the last six weeks, and would
take pleasure in recommending them as every
way adapted to do family sewing ; apparently
as little liable to get out of order as any of the
r higher-priced Machines ; and should think, at
the low price at which they are sold, would
place them in the hands of every family.
Respectfully yours, WM. D. DAVIDSON.
