Mr. W. S. Harden, of Bryan, Shot by j
his Step-Son.
We regret to learn that Dr. W. S.
Harden, of Bryan county was shot on
Thursday morning last, by his step son,
George U Lane, a young man between
•17 and 18 years of age. The weapon
used was a doubled barrelled shot gun,
from which a full charge of buck-shot
was discharged into the body of Dr. H..
taking effect in the side and back, just
above the hip, some of the shot passing
entirely through the body The de
ceased survived about an hour attev he
was shot, and died calmly, anil in the
full possession of his mental faculties.
Dr. Harden was well known and high
ly reflected in this city, where he has
relatives and numerous friends, who
will i'C pained to hear of his violent
and untimely death.— Savannah -Va«».

Interesting Reminiscences.—' One of•
the most interesting features of the re-1
cent Atlantic Telegraph celebration at ;
Boston, says the Boston // raid, was the
illumination of the old John -Hancock
mansion, on I’eaoon street. The old
gentleman, (nephew of the Revolution
ary patriot,) who now owns and occu
pies the ptemises, gave directions that
in honor of the event, even the light
ning rods planted by Franklin himself
on his mansion, should afford some in
dications of the joy universally felt on
the accomplishment of this great un
dertaking The mansion was illumina
ted from the floor to the attic, and the
same candle sticks were used which
were employed to celebrate the estab
lishment of peace in 1785, in 1815, and
the introduction of Cochituate water in
1848.
Spit Against a School Faecher. —
The colored population of Providence,
R, 1., have commenced a suit against
Mr. Gadding, principal of one of the
grammar schools of that city, tor re
fusing the son of a colored man the
privilege of entering the school as a pu
pil. The father of the colored boy is a
tax payer, and he and his friends are
determined to test the question wheth
er colored children can enter white
schools. Able counsel have been se
cured.
Fob Frazer River.— The steamship
Hermann sailed for Itiode Janeiro, Val
paraiso, Panama, San Francisco, and
Frazei River from New Yon; on Mon
day. She took out 773 passenger*.—
The Hermann has coal and provisions
enough on board to last until her arri
val at San Francisco. A vast concourse
of people assembled on the wharf to
witness her departure, and they cheer
ed the steamer in a vociferous manner.
A Wrong Guess.—A physician going
down State street with a friend of itis,
said to him, '' Let ns avoid that pretty
little woman yon sec there on the left !
she knows me, and casts on me looks
of indignation. X attended her hus

Peach Leaves ton V tvT. —Mrs. Dan
iel R. Mitchell, of Rome, Ga., says the
Rome Courier, has discoveted that peach
leaves are superior to hops for making
yeast. The bread made from it is quite
as light and equally well flavored. We
understand that the yeast is made in
the same way. except that dried peach
leaves arc used instead of hops.
The Great Chess Game. —The score in
the game of chess between Mr. Morphy
and Mr. Lowenthal in London, accord
ing to tlie English papers, uow stands,
Morpltv five, Lowenthal two, drawn one.
The last game lost by Mr. Morphy is
spoken of by the London Era as a hard
fought game of sixty moves, ending
with a contest of pawns, during which
Mr Lowenthal took one hour to delibe
rate upon a move. The game would
have been drawn hail not Mr Morphy
made an error in the combination, at
the elose of which, skilful advantage
was taken by his opponent, who tints
won the game.
The Secretary of the Interior has ad

northern frontiers-of Texas and the

from the attacks of the Camanches.
A few days since, a young daughter
of Geo. S. Underhill, of Chester, N. H-.

OUR CHEAP QUAKER CITY SEW
INC* MACHINES TRIUMPH A NT.
WE are continually hearing, from
reliable sources that the Agents of some
high-priced Sewing Machines arc crying down
our reasonable pricnl ones as humbugs , that
they cannot, be made to work, and that parties
who purchased ours have thrown them aside
and bought theirs in many cases. Now. we de
nounce each a"d all of these reports aa false,
from whatever source they come.
The truth is, these opposition gentlemen very
well know that they must kill off <>ur low-priced
j Machines, or the enormous profit made on theirs
will be exposed, much against their Intent
bonce their laborious efforts to create the im
pression that our Machines are worthless hum
bugs.
To satisfy the minds ot those who may desire
lo purchase, but have not the opportunity of per
xonaiiy exa-olniL and deciding upon its merits,
wo have tak» n occasion to call on a few who
have our Machines in use. for their true and can
did opinion o them. They have readily and
cheerfully responded, and lor the frank and pub
lic expression of their sentiments, we tender
them our best thanks, and assure them and oth
ers. who may be influenced thereby, that our
efforts shall ever be given to merit and retain
the good opinion therein express'd.

j Messrs. Haigb & Andrews— Gents: We are
ju-ing your small sized Quaker City Sowing Ma
-1 chim s in our families, and they are giving per
! feet satisfaction. We find them wed adapted to
1 all kim's of sewing. They run much easier, and
from their uniplicity, are easier managed an<
kept in order than the more complicated high
priced Machine, and wo cheerfully recommend
all who are iu want of the article, to call and see
yours before paying from SIOO to $l5O for a Ma
chine which, in our estimation, is no bettor than
these cheap household assistants. We hail this
Machine as a truly great Invention, and the very
low price for which it is retailed, wiU soon place
it in almost every family in the land.
