We understand that up to Sunday
night the river had risen about three
feet, but it has since fallen about one
foot. Several steamers are laying at
our wharves loading and unloading. At
present the river is in good navigable
order, but unless there have been heavy !
rains above, it will not long remain so. j

There were seven interments in this
city during the week ending the sth
inst.—two whites and five blacks. The
Board of Health will meet weekly here-'
after, and we will publish the reports as
soon as received. The city never was in
a cleanlier condition than at the present
time, and the atmosphere is very pure.
Accident.
We learn that on Saturday last, a
small negro lad, belonging to Rev. Iver
son L. Brooks, near Hamburg, S. C.,
was caught in the cog wheels,of a Cotton
Gin, and crushed to death.

Mn. Editor Allow me to call your
attention to an editorial which appear
ed in your columns on the evening of
Friday last. You tiien stated that‘“ an
affray occured at Train’s barroom near
tlieG. R. R. Depot, on Wednesday night
last, in which a Mr. Edward Girvin,
dangerously stabbed a Mr. Cline in
three places with his sword cane," also
that the difficulty is “supposed to have
been the result of at. old grudge enter
tained by Girvin against Clinii.
Now if you will allow me to make a|
correction, I will state the facts as they
occurred. A difficuley first occurred bo
tween Girvin and a young man named
John Harden. Harden then procured
the services of Cline to attack Girvin,
they followed him to the place where
the difficulty occurred, where it is sup
posed, Cline had been stabbed by Gir
vin. One Who Knows.

The Norfolk Day Book tells a good
joke about a party of four fast young
men in that city, who hauided a ba
ker’s wagon, one night last week, a
mile or two into the country, just for
mischief. After being fagged out, they
determined to end their devilment by
upsetting the wagon in a pond. Imagine
their astonishment, however, when just
as they were about to upturn it, an un
known voice from the inside said, “Hold
on gentlemen. Suppose you take this
wagon back to the city again”—and.
when still further, officer Nelson, of
the police, jumped out, and collared
the ringleader. After a short parley
the officer again got in, the bloods hitch
ed themselves up, hauled him hack to
town, each paid a fine and costs, and re
solved that hereafter they will be a lit
tie. more careful in planning their
tricks,tbat no police officer overhears
them.
Wax Poisons.—Few persons, especial
ly. perhaps, of the very young ladies
who practice the very pleasant art of
modelling fruits, flowers, &c , in wax.
at all suspect the danger in which they
are placed fronr the poisonous nature of
the coloring matter of the wax which
they handle so unsuspectingly. The
white wax, for instance, contains white
lead: the green, copper; the yellow,
chrome yellow; the orange, chrome
yellow and Vermillion—strong poisons
all—while many other kinds of wax
; are equally poisonous, and, therefore,
. dangerous. Several eases are known in
Mthich young ladies have been attacked
with partial paralysis of the hands and
arms, after having devoted some time
to the practice of modelling
Sad Rumor.—The Paterson (N. J.)
Democrat says a report was current
1 about New York yesterday that a promi
nent witness in the case of Donnelly,
who was hung for the murder of Moses,
, the bar keeper of the Ocean House,
died on Friday night last, confessing
| himseif to have been the murderer of
Moses, and declaring that Donnelly was j

of happiness.
I Died in France.—Mr. Jeremiah Win-1

of Havre, lias just died in that city, j
aged 79. He was an American by birth j

MADISON, Sept. 3.—Cotton is beginning to
come in, and about 40 biles have been received
of the new crop. Five bales brought in yester
day by Wm. Hearne, Esq., of Hcarncvillc, Put

; best we have seen. Our market ranges from
110*4 to 11‘ 4 cents—an extra lot would readily
command 11), cents.
Wheat continues to come in freely, finding a
ready mahtc* at from 80 to cents bushel.

j The warm dry weather, together with the rust,
has opened the Cotton generally much earlier

paid for it have stimulated the planters to bring
it forward. Our Banks are unusually liberal in
their discounts lor the purchase of the article,
ami our planting friends need have no fear of

SAMUEL M. KING’S SHIN
GLE MACHINE, now on exhibition at Wm.
H. Goodrich’s Carpenter Shop, Reynolds street.
Augusta, Ga., where it cun be seen in operation
from the hours of 8 A. M. to 1 P. M., and from
2 to 7 P. M.
The principle embraced in this Machine cor-!
responds exactly with the old and well known '■
process of splitting and dressing by hand labor, !
working directly with the grain in tho timber. !
I It produces an article not liable to warp or check !
from exposure. This Machine was patented
January loth. 185 ii. and has already obtained u j
; celebrity possessed by none other. The whole !
Machine can be built for one third the cost or I
any other, and will rive and shave from the bolt 1
from B,OO'J to 15,(AG0 Shingles par day. For this '
purpose it only requires a two-horso power to !
work it; at the same time you can make any !
required length, and it is adjustable to any re*
quired thickness or taper ; it is simple, cheap j
and durable, any ordinary mechanic can make
it, and a boy may work it.
To Shingle Dealers, Lumbermen, Capitalists
and Speculators, this Machine is a safe, sure and i
profitable investment. We invite all iff call and
see it in operation. Any further information can
be bad by calling ongkhe Patentee or his Agents,
one of whom will always be found with the Ma
chine, or at the Giobe Hotel.
One of the above named Shingle Machines Is '
now in successful operation on the plantation of
Mr. I. Hopkins, in Burke county, near the Au- |
gusta A Savannah Railroad, 17 miles below Au
gusta. where it may be seen in daily operation i
by plantation hands, turning out 7,000 to 10,000 I
■per day.
