W. G. Woodstock.—We would call
the attention of those having Watches,
Clocks, Jewelry, &c., to repair, to tliej
advertisement of Mr. Woodstock, ini
this day’s paper. He has beon engaged |
in his line of business in tins city for a
number of years past, and as a wo k
man, has given general satisfaction to
the customers of his employers. He
has now set up on his own hook —hear
in mind the old adage—help the poor
the rich can take care of themselves.

One share Griffin Mining Company at

Voting Mm's Christian Association.
It will he seen by a notice under our
special notice head, that the Young
Men’s Christian Association of this city
have appointed committees in the differ
ent wards, for the purpose of making
collections to relieve the wants of the
Young Men’s Christian Association of
New Orleans, who, we understand, are
short of means, but doing much good
with what little they have and by per-j
sonal attention. In 1854, when we
were visited by Yellow Fever, the How
ard Association, of Now Orleans con-j
tribuled much to our relief, by sending
ns a competent physician, Dr. Campbell
and eight competent nurses. Now that
we are free from disease, and New Or
leans, or the Young Men’s Christian
Association has called for means to en
able them more effectually to carry!
through the good work they have com
menced—visiting the sick and relieving
the wants of the needy let our citizens
give freely—like bread cast on the wa
ters, it will bring its return, should
circumstances require it.

The Loiulmi Time*.
We were presented yesterday, by
friend Tnos. Whyte, with a copy of
the London Times and Supplement, of
the 18th August, brought by him from
the ould country. We were not aware
that lie had crossed the ocean, but from
his description of iris travels, lie must
have had a pleasant time of it. He
left New Yolk in the steamer City of
Washington, and after a pleasant pas
sage, arrived at Liverpool, Proceeding
from thence, lie went to London, saw
Mr. Dallas, procured a passport to Par
is. After seeing the sights in Paris, he
proceeded to Cherbourg, where he wit
nessed the reception of Queen Vic. and
Prime Albert, by Napoleon and the
Empress Euuenia— seeing Itoyality in
all its gorgeous robes. He then visited
Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Belfast and
othev places in Ireland, and returned to
this city on Saturday last in good
health, fine spirits, and much pleased i
witli his excursion.

We regret to learn that the Gin House
of Mr. William Walton, in Columbia
county, was destroyed by tire last night.
The tire learn occurred accidentally,
and but a few bales of Cotton were de
stroyed.
S*F‘ The steamship Augusta, Captain
WooDiicLL, from Savannah, arrived at
New York on Sunday morning—all
well.
Two Hi Ink Days.
Thursday and Friday last were, indeed,
two good days of business. The new
Cotton came in very briskly and found
anxious purchasers at full prices. Plan
ters generally are soiling at the quoted
ratefl On Thursday the purchases were
from 11 1-4 to 11 5 Bc. The grades of
Cotton are generally from strict mid
dling to middling fair.
On Friday, the streets were well
thronged with unloaded Cotton and
produce wagons, showing that our great
staple, and o her agricultural produc
tions, meet with ready sale, atsatisfac
tory and remunerating prices Cotton
sold on yesterday at from 11 3 8 to 31
f> 8 cts , for extremes Wc learn most
of the incoming Cotton is Georgia raised.
We must coufcss that our plan ters
are entitled to praise for the manifest
improvement exhibited in the pressing
and neatness of the packages of Cot
ton.
Our merchants seem quite exhilerated
at the cheering prospects of a heavy
business season, and we tiust they will
uot so far neglect their interests, as to ! *
deem it superfluous for them to make ~
known their location and business'i

GLE MACHINE, now on exhibition at Wm. ;
H. Goodrich's Carpenter Shop, Reynolds .street,
Augusta, Ga., where it can bo sen in operation
from the hours of SA. M. to 1 P. M., and from
2 to 7 P. M.
The principle embraced in this Machine cor
responds exactly with the old and well known
Process of splitting and d easing by hand labor
workiug directly with tho "rain in the timber.
It produces an article not liable to warp or check
from exposure. This Machine was patented
January 15th, 1856, and has already obtained a ,
celebrity possessed by none oilier." The whole
Mael ine can be built for one third the cost ol 1
any other, and will rive and shave from tho bolt
from 8,000 to 15,C00 Shingles per day. For rhis
purpose it only requires a two-horse power to
work it ; at the same timo you can make any
required length, and it is adjustable to any re !
quired thickness or taper ; it is simple, cheap ‘
and durable, any ordinary mechunic can make
it, and a boy may work it. 1
To Shingle Dealers, Lumbermen, Capitalists
and Speculators, this Machine is a safe, sure and 1
profitable investment. We invite all u> call and ]
see it in operation. Any further information can 1
be bad by calling on the Patentee or his Agents, r
one of whom will always be found with the Mu- c
chine, or at the G obe Hotel.
One of the abovj named Shingle Machines is r
now in successful operation on the plantation of
Mr. 1. Hopkins, in Burke county, near the Au
gusta & Savannah Railroad, 17 miles below Au
gusta, where it may be seen in ua»ly operation
by plantation hands, turning out 7,000 to 10.010 0
per day. “
