Mechanics' Bank—A Good Dividend.
—lt will be seen that the Directors of
this Bank have declared a dividend of
Five Dollars per shale out of the profits
of the past six months, which is paya
ble to stockholders on demand.
Bailie & Brother.—This is a new
house in this city, but well known to
merchants and others visiting Charles
ton for a number of years past.—-
They have taken the store recent
ly occupied by Sherman, Jesscp &
Co., just above the Bank of Ai^iTSfai'
uj-—— 'JtntVTtre now~Speriing orf@l'f the largest
and best assortments of Carpetings, of
every description, Bugs, &c., ever offer
ed in this city. They say they will dis
pose of thuir goods on as good terms
and at as low prices as the same descrip
tion of goods can be purchased in New
York or Charleston —they have the
means and facilities for laying down
their goods at low figures, and can
afford to sell cheap and realize a fair re
muneration. We recommend this store
to our citizens, interior merchants and
planters wanting anything in the car
pet or floor cloth line.
Garwood & Bussell, —These gentle
men aro the Agents for H. B. Ames' Ger
man Chemical Erasive Soap, said to be
one of the best articles of the kind
now in use. See their advertisement.—
It will also be seen that they have open
ed a New Family Grocery, in the upper
part of the city, and will keep on hand
articles in their line of the best quality.
„ Benjamin & Goodrich.—This house is
® ....... ]
well established in the Furniture Line,
'rtieykeepon hand, and manufacture
to order, all articles in their line, from
the Cradle to the Coffin. We took a
look at their Btock the other day and no
ticed that they had their goods so ar
ranged as to please the most fastidious
taste. Some of t’.eir furniture is rich
and beautef jj; call on them, you will

* Police Practices.
We have been under frequent obliga
tions to our police for information con
cerning arrests, &c., for which we ten
der anew our obligations. But they
have a practice—regarded by them the
best policy—of concealing robberies and
other crimes from the press while they
are on pursuit of the perpetrators. It
is a mistaken idea that rascals will be
'a whit more careless of concealment
because they are not published, and
that the press can do much to put the
public on the lookout, there is no ques
tion. In our large cities the stolen
goods are described in the papers that
they may be recognized if offered for
sale, and the whole details are given
promptly to the papers when any crime
demanding investigation is committed.
But with us, the thief has time to get to
the ends of the eartli before intelligence
is lodged anywhere save at the police
office.
AVatev Works.
A. W. Craven, Esq., Enginer of the
■Croton Water Works in New York, we
understand is now in our city, with a
view of prospecting for water. We wish
him every success, as what our citizens
most need is a bountiful supply of water,
which we have all around us.

morning Broad and Mclntosh streets

An«l give me a glimpse av your beautiful face:
My ancient dudeeu i.-t all burnt to a cinder,
And hoogs are quite thick ;u this mutherin

Sure Biddy, my girl, it’s no joke for a janious,
To walk all the day, ’nath n botherin’ hod.
And thin, in the night, seryuade a young Vanious,
Clanc up to his knees, in the muddy ould sod!
I’m (lyin’ with rapture, my jewel of craiures,
And niver a lovyer more willingly howicJ ;
But don’t ye let scorn wrinkle up your swato
futures,
Because your poor Paddy ha-' got such acowld.
The hghtnin’ is roarin’, the toonder is flashing
The moon’s no bigger than nothin’ at all;
And such an outragious and divilish splashm’

The Heaviest Yet.—Yesterday about
tvev&cn hundred bales of cotton were
brought up on the Girard & Mobile
[foilroad. As most of it was received
too late to be handed over to the ware
houses yesterday evening, it was not all
counted in the receipts of yesterday, .
but the bulk will go to swell to-day’s
receipts. As arrivals by wagon are also
lively to-day,we anticipate a large day s
business. —Columbus Enquirer, bth.
Gin House Burnt. —The gin house of
Mr. Isaiah Dubose, says the Demopolis
Gazette , in the neighborhood of Macon, i
in thecanebrake, was entirely consumed
by fire on last Friday evening, together 1
with thirty-three bales of cotton, all
his corn cribs and contents. It is not
known, certainly, how the fire origina
ted, but it is supposed to have been pro
duced by friction of the gin. The fire \
was distinctly seen from town, though
Mr. Dubose’s place is nine miles distant, 1
Hawks,—We have several times heard
the remark that hawks were more nu- ;
merous in this section than usual this
season. Do they migrate ? and in flocks? l
The Fredericksburg (Ya.) Herald reports \
that a farmer of Spottsylvania county j
had his attention arrested the other
day by a very large flock of hawks moving i
Southward ; he estimated their number *
at two hundred ! An old gentleman of !
the same county remarked, that about •
25 years ago, be observed a similar emi
grating flock of hawks, and supposed
they were moving on account of the ,
scarcity of food. —Columbus Enquirer , 2 d ;

REPORT OF THE COMPTROLLER OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK.
Hon. S. E. Church, Comptroller, bo.—Dear Sir : Agreeably to your request, I have exam
' mod, I believe critically and fully, the allairs, condition and assets of the Great Western Insurance
, nd Trust Company. 1 have seen and inspected not only their Books, which are well kept, but
i the Assets under the heads of Cash on hand, Bills Receivable, and Stock Notes, and feel perpectly
! .safe in reporting *o you that the four items of “Cash on hand and in the hands of Agents,” “Uii- 1
settled Premiums.” “ Bills Receivable,” and ‘Stock Notes,” amounting to $93,858, ore good,
j and available to the Company for that amount, or nearly that amount. I have taken some pains
! to ascertain the value of Stocks held by the Company, having visited the several Companies and
! conversed fully and freely with their respective officers _
The building belonging to the Company, on the corner of Walnut ami Fourth streets, is a very
fine free stone building, well built, and admirably arranged ; its location is one of the best for
; business purposes in Philadelphia. I have '•ailed upon the gentlemen who built it and sold it to
{ the Company, who informed me that it cost him over cash. I think this property would
• be a good investment at $75,000.
] The Real Estate Mortgages contained in the statement of the Company, are all t ood for the
! amount stated, and cover property worth at least fifty per ccut. more than the amount for which
j they are mortgaged
From this statement, it will be seen that this Company should receive your Certificate. 1 de
, sir- ••• • ; ! tij.il the .'ompany seems to be intelligently and prudently mann ed, and I find that it
I enjoys the lull confidence us the business men of Philadelphia.
Signed, L. S. CHATFIELD. Agent of Comptr filer of New York.
