THE HON. W. C. PRESTON
Who was, during the late canvass, in favor oi put*
ting down tbe present Administration, even by force
of armt, at the Whig dinnar recently given him in
Charleston, uttered this sentiment:
The next Adminittration: A decent respect
to the opinions of the people, requires that it should
have a (air trial."
Wo fully coincide with the honorable gentleman,
and In the language of the late Wm. H. Crawford,
when n guest of our chitons, we say nf the next Ad.
ministration, os he said of that of the younger
Adams, at its commencement—" Let it bo judged
by its measures."
The latter was judged by its measures, and the
people, by a vote of more titan two to ono in the
Electoral College, condemned |t.
Though we hope but little from the next Admin
istration, and apprehend that the people will derive
less, yet we are prepared, when the 4th of March
shall arrive to give a candid support to those ntoa.
sure* which may be Republican, (wo will not say
Demoeratie, lest perchance we may roa ethn ire of
these who differ from us.) At the same time we wilj
present a decided oppniition to those which may
spring from the "corruptions" (we use a favorite
Whig phrase) of power, to administer to the
cravings of those whoat heart disliking a Democrat
ic Republican Government, exert all their energies
to have a master in the person of a President of e
great National Bank.
When the time comes, wo will be found, as we
trust we always have, rendering a proper tribute to
Constitutional measures, and our opposition to
constitutional means to increase power with the sac
rifice of Stato sovereignty, shall never degenerate
into that factious fault-finding which has weakened
the influence or the Press as * moral engine, while
it may have served to magnify iu power In times
of high party excitement. If the parly to which we
are proud of being attached, expected us to sacri
fice fact* for garbled statements, and an indepen
dent position far the lowly seat of those instructed
ia their course, we would rebel and leave It to them
to find a pliant Editor else where. But we have a
higher opinion of the Demoeratie Party, and slial)
goon asserting,as we have ever strived to do, the
dignity ufa FrKk Prkss, unawed by the denuncia
tions of virulent opponents, and undismayed by
'heirinsidiout attacks.

DeW Sir:—The House met at 3 o'clock, yester*

Bank BUI. Several gentlemen succeeded Mr.
Flournoy, to wltt—Messrs. Chappell, Hardeman
and Toombs, against striking out the 1st Section—
Messrs. Hunter, Rodgers and Betheo, in favor of
thf motion of striking out. The .latter gentleman,
Mr. Bethea from Washington county, certainly
made a hippy effort In his argument, nature no
doubt designed this gentleman an orator: his time I
understand has been devoted more to mercantile
pursuits than legislative, build* speech on this sub
ject was thrilling and very cutting. The vote being
taken, to strike out the first section of tho bill—

LEGISLATIVE PROCEEDINGS.
"We received on Saturday, from our Correspon

Wednesday (9th Inst.) Several motions for re-
coesiderstion were made. Oae, which prevailed,
was to reconsider the vote fixing the mileage of the
Erolident of the Senate and the Speaker of the

were to proceed to Washington next morning.

GEORGIA vt MAINE.
We, this morning, publish Governor McDon
ald's Communication of the 7lh inst. to the Legis
lature, introducing a letter of J2th November last,
from Gov. Gilmer, of Virginia. Wo received these
documents from our State Senator two or three
mails since, and would not now divide litem, did tho
arrival of four mails at a t ime allow us to fill with one
subject, so large a portion of our columns. The
deep stake which the South holds in this cuntrover
sy tnkes us anxious to spread all tit* documents,
before our readers, and wehopo to do soatan early
day.
That New York, through lies Whig Governor,
and her Legislature, has acted in had faith
towards Virginia and the South generally, thrra can*
not he the slightest diffurence of opinion. Shall
patriotic section of country be, from day today, in.
suited by such conduct on the part uf States uf tho
same family and of a common origin! If the Con
stitution proves not a rope of sapd, when such
qucstior.sare involved, let it be respected. If it does,
the sooner new guards are provided far our future
security, the better. Mr. Adams has alreedy dis
played (on the first day tha Home Wes organised)
his fanatical seal against Southern Institutions.

Some of oUr sanguine opponents flatter themselves
they have prostrated our party In the dust. A truce
such self-gratuletion I More than a million of
voters may be figuratively prostrated by defeat, but
there is too much of American philosophy in such
mass to allow them to be discouraged by tempo
rary adversity. Besides, there cannot be found
Harrisonitcs enough to keep the Democracy in tha
dust. Thomas JxFrarson, the expounder of the
principles they cherish, was defeated in 1796, but
hia faith was not the less ardent, nur his desire to
