of Tuesday, we learn that General Gaines, deliver
ed a lecture on Saturday evening before the WiMum
Wirt Institutisupon his favorite scheme of pruvjding
for tho National defence by an organised system of
Rail Roads and Stoam Floating Bulletins. The
lecturer was listened to with greut interest, and tho
whole subject met with the most decided approval.
The General imparts to his addtess a lively Charac
ter by apt usd rapid illustrations, which would
make him a popular lecturer,\ His subject was ful
ly and satisfactorily discussed in an hour, when his
interesting lady succeedcdliim by particular request,

the very echo, atul so dense was the crowd that

difficult to pass out.

THE NEW WORLD.
We havO received from tho publisher* in New
York a number of this splendid specimen of news
paper typography. Tho efforts now mudo to dis
seminute information through the literary papers
must satisfy a rending public.
Why, there is a week’s steady reading in this
mammoth hebdomcdal. We ha/e not measured it
but the Philadelphia N. American says—“ it is the
largest folio newspaper ever published It is five
feet eight inches by four feot four inches, and con
tains nerfrly fifty square fret. It is ornamented
with a large number of very spirited wood cuts,
and the rending matter is attractive and in good
taste. Locke’s celebrated Moon story is present*

A New Senator from Illinoia.—Samuel Me Ro
berts (Van Buren) was, on the 16th inst. elected,
by the Legisature of Illinois, to be a Senator of the
United States from that State for six years from the
3d day ofMarcb next, when the term of Mr. Sena-;
tor Robinson will expire. The state of the vote was
a* follows: For Mr. McRobert* 77; for Cyrus Ed
wards g) 50 votes.
ACQUITTAL OF MRS. KINNEY.
The evidence in the case of Mrs. Hannah Kinney
charged with the poisoning of her hu.-band, before
the Supreme Judicial Court of Bnrinn, Was con
cluded at a little after 10 o’clock on Friday morning
last. Mr. Dexter then commenced the closing argu
ment for tha defence, an J closed at half pail 4 P-
M. In the afternoon, a quarter before 3, Mr.
Austin, At»ornry General, commenced the closing
argument for the prosecution, and occupied the
court till nearly 8 o’clock. The prisoner was then
call* d out, but declined saying anything, not feeling
equal to the attempt. Judge Shaw then, after
consulting the wi*h«s of the jury, delivered his
charge, which was concluded about 10 o’clock.—
Tb* jury then retired, and in about five minutes re
turned with a verdict of Not Guti.Tr. Mrs. Kinney
was then discharged. When the verdict was ren
dered there wasagrest applause, but it was imme
distely suppressed. The crowd went down Into

At Fort Fanning, el.ven warriors came in on or
about Chrixrtnas dny. At Tampa, fifteen warriors
came in on Christmas day. Seven of them came
to Fort King in quest of Gen. Armisteod—they afi
terward* left that pos^to seek him at Tampa Bay.
At Cedar Keys, either seven or seventeen warriors
surrendered themselvc*, our informant due* not re-
culloct which.

two or three Mickusuckius, the most iniomimble
of all the tribes.
It is Supposed ihatthe presence of tho delegation

and are desirous to atrengthnu themselves by the

LATER!—INDIANS CAPTURED.
By the arrival yesteidny of the U. S. steamer
Newbern, Capl. McNulty, from Pilutkn, we learti
from our correspondent, that on the 25th ult. Col-
Harney succeeded in capiuring about FORTY
INDIANS. He hung ten Warriors nnd took the

STILL LATER.
The above news in i elution to the capture of the
Indians, is confirmed by the arrival m this post last
