The overland India mail arrived at London on
the 7tll of December, via Alnxnndiiaond Marseilles,
containing udtice* from Bombay to the 1st of No
vember, from China to tint 4th of August,nnd Irom
Calcutta to tho 13th ofOctoher.
CHINA.
Thn expedi inn loCImsun, under tho command
of Commodore Sir .1. Gordon Bremer and Brign
dierGen. Burrell, arrived off that island on tho 2d
July, and the necessary soundings having been ink
sm, anchored in tho harbor of Chusan on the 4ili,
and after summoning tho Governor to surrender,
compliance with which was evaded, tho operations
against the place wore commenced on tho following
day, July 5th. After a short resistance on thn
bench, which was soon cleared, tlio troops landed
nnd begnn tho breach uf tlio city of Ting-hue-been,
tho cnpitnl ofCliusan, which was defended till n
late hour, but an tlio following morning was found
to hnve beun evacuated during tlio night, nnd the
British troops immediately took possession. A
great number of guns wero captured, together with
numerous stores nnd a lurgo quantity of ammuni
lion.
The loss cf tho Chinese t» estimated nt about 30
killed; there were no casualties on the side of the
British.
Admiral Elliott, In tho Melville, reached Chusan
on the 7th of July, and unfortunately got aground,
with so modi damage done as to make it necessary
to have hi< ship hove down nnd dismantled, thus
rendering Iter perfectly useless. In sailing along
the coast, tho Blonde, sent into Amoy withn flag of
truce, was fired into; hut, on returning the fire, the
Chisoese troops werequickly dispersed with consid
erable loss.
Shortly uftcr the admiral's arrival, lin proceeded
to Ning-po-foo to forward n sealed teller to the Em
nerur, which,- after having been received by llie
Mandarins of that ciiy, was returned unopened. In
cantrqitenre of this occurrence, Ning-po.fno wus
blockaded, nnd preparations were making to extend
the blockade to the mouth of the river Yung-he Ki
an, leading to Conton. The capture of Chusan,
and the action nt Amoy, appenr to have caused u
great sensation in tliut part of Chinn. Brigadier
General Butrell has been appointed governor of

that Commississioncr Lin was vainly endeavoring

squadron, which consisted of the Diuul, Village,
Hyacinth,and Larne, subs; quently reinforced by the

commence till the 1st of July,
All tho foreigners remaining nt Canton, namely,
two Americans, two Swiss, one Dutchman nnd one
Portuguese, hud been ordered to leave the city. All
the factories were abandoned. The inner passage
was left open by thn blocknders, hut the Chinese
would nut allow uny silk ot tea to come down, nor
manufactured good* te go up.
The American ships Merchant, Adelaide and Wei
lington had been released.

portant question of international rights came before

poared that Mr. Bailey, nn American gentleman,
who is appointed Consul of the United States in
Sardinia, wus formerly at the heud of a mercantile
house in New York, and indebted to Messrs. Piedon
na and Muuroy.of Paris, in the sum of 40.000 fines,

Tiie plaintiffs recently learned that Mr. Daily was

vlsionnl arrest, placed him in prison. Mr. Bailey

ported Mr. Bailey’s application to tho Tribunal for
release, on the broad ground that, a* a diplomatic

grounds, tlio principal of which were, first, that only
diplomatic agents accredited to the French Govern
ment, and nut those who merely puss through
France on their way to other countries, arc exempt

term. Thu Court decided to the contrary, and or

Court Royule was made against this decision, on the

gociolions were kept secret, but the cot respondents
of the London papers say tliat Commodore Nupiei’s

tho restoration of the Turkish fleet—to bo offset by
the confirmation of tho Pacha us hereditary sovereign
of Egypt. The latest letter, dated Novemlmr 26,
stales that the Puclia hod finally yielded, and that nn
order would bo forthwith given by hint for the embar
kaiiou of Ins son Ihmhim and hi* army. Tho Turk
ish fleet was to remain in pnoes.iim of the Pacha
until proper guarantee* should he.given for his here
ditnry enjoyment of Egypt. Commodore Napier
was resolved, und prepared, to bombard thn city if
his terms Imd not been complied with. The ships

The eldest daughter of the Sultan Abdul Medjid

the Bill inst. wore also politely loaned us by the
Edilots of the Republican.
Tho Philadelphia U. S. Gazette says that tho day
of resumption (I5;h)' is looked to by many of our
citizens with much nppreiiension,” The Editor
thinks llicre Is no foundation for opprelmnsion, and
expresses the opinion that llioU.S. Bank "can
have no difficulty in resuming,” and remarks—

Thn great quantity orrnin that has fal cn during
tlio last few days und consequent breaking up of
the ice, has caused quite h freshet in the Schuylkill.
A great deal of coal nnd wood has boon swept away.
On the Delaware the freshet has been,ifuny thing-
worse than that on the Schuylkill. Tho rcrent mild
weather and the rnin which fell about II o’clock on
Thursday in torrents, has entirely mulled and
brought down into tho river all tho ice ttlong its
banks. The conscqucnco has been that tiie river
lias risen full five feet.
Tho bridges ul Newhopo, Taylorsville nnd Yard-
leyville ore carried away. Thoy passed under the
Trenton bridge without injuring It. Tiie bridge
over Knncxcus Creek is swept oway.
A gentleman whofciimo down from Trenton says
that the river wns filled widt floating timber,drown
ed pigs, poultry, hay stacks, &c. A number of
small out-liousefc were also seen £ rating down tho
stream, poitirtns o; these article* will no doubt
ranch us far doWn ns the city to-day. Tho stute of
tho river opposite tlio city during Thursday night
wns truly terrible; lltc water rose over the wharves
