Extract of a Inter from Hum.
ft/ircyville , dated December 9.
“ You wib undoubtedly be plea
sed to learn the prodigious emula
tion excited by the present* of the
premium society in Philadelphia,
which were delivered by colonel
Humphrey* to the different persons
concerned in fabricating the super
fine piece of broadcloth that gain
ed the premium. Probably the
same value of property has never
before been hud out to such profit
in the United States. At the same
time, it was a peculiar satisfaction
for hint to observe that finer and
better cotton and woollen yarn has
been spun during Ins late absence
than at any time when he had been
prr«ent. It is imagined tbe Merino
wool now spinning bv Wales
French will make a piece of cloth
perfetable to the. prize piece.
n While the proprietor signtfv**
bis high gratification at the general
g <lo d conduct and appearance of
the works, particularly t<* the pa
per manufacture, he did not refrain
from some reproaches to the Stock
ing Weave Is, that they had not
in all instance* i quailed expecta
tion though he a as convinced there
.wore no better workmen tn a iy
country, if they would exert their
talents. A* a stimuli**, he told them
he shnti'd send al uge quantity of
the stocking* of their weaving to
Washington. They arc now ambi
rions to sec whose wi'» be the most
approved. All the hosts have the
particular in.tik of the ni.ikcr.”

IMPEACHMENT.
A gentleman lately present at
thr council of the Lhcr. ke** ra
tion has transmitted the following
curious detail of the impeachment
of their k'ng ami two chiefs, to
n gentleman in this place.
I am iust returned from thr
gaM*on < f Highivajsee, where in
addition tn the politeness I expe
rience d i'rum the rtlicer* I "as

Bfckgreeably to the treaty with the*

warrior* assembled on this occa
sion, adorned wuh all the potup
nfssvagc greatness j which gave
me ; n opportunit y of seeing ihiir
oifticms tnd manners ; and afTor
did’me ihe satisfaction of being!
present at renne of thrir Council*.
In one of those tooYicils their
king ft two of »he principal chiefs
were Refused of treachery lo the

chiefs were ail seated wi'h *<»l r mn
giavity, whilst the warriors stood
with composure around ; the char

repeated in sentences bv an In.
than interpreter who siood in the
cintre of the circle; the result
was, that after an animated tie
bate the king and chiefs weie de
posed and declared unfit to hold
any ( Alice in the nation hereafter.
When the sentence was pro
nounced he arose with the dignity
of Aborigine majesty, and declar
ed his acquiescence , with a force
of expression and vehemence of
gesture which astonished me—he
concluded (as the interpreter in
humed nr.«) by saying, I have
ltd you to battle and to victory—
I have grown old in your ser
vice, and have now learned that
ingratitude is not peculiar lo the
whites ; and that the man is yet
unborn, perhaps will never conte
into existence, who can give gen
eral satisfaction to the Cherokee
nation.

SLAMBANGISM.
NOTICE.
THE Members of the Slam.
Dang Society are hereby in
formed that a general meeting of
the Society will be held at the
Court House in Waynesborough,
r n the second Monday in March
ntxt, lor the purpose o! electing
officers, and transacting other im
portant business—lt is hoped a
general and punctual attendance
will be given.
Should any member feel the
smallest disposition to neglect hit
duty on this occasion, let him re
flect that the well-being, and pef.
haps the existence of a Society as
honorable as it is ancient, and as
ancient as it is honorable, is now
at stake. r J he late secession of
some of its most worthy members
has given an alarming blow to the
institution. Nothing but an un
shaken attachment to its principles
and an undeviating adherance to
its rtiles can save it from annihila
tion. A eulegium on the institu
tion is useless ; it i s sufficient to
say, it it fouaded on prinbiples as
ancient as the human race, and as
immutable as the laws of nature.
At a time when vigorous exerti
ons are making for the general
welfare, and a laudable ambition
for the promotion of the pubiie
good seems to have prevaded our
country, shall the members of the
Slam. Bang Society, nninftucnced
by the general example, supinely
neglect what so nearly concern*
their best interest and chief happi
ness ? Negligence and inattention
to the interests of the Society have
hitherto been its bane. A mo
ment’s reflection will, it is presu
med, be sufficient to arouse every
member to a sense of his duty.
