FOTOMAC BRIDGE
On Saturday last the VV ashing

commodation of the public. Tin
great and useful improvement hi
been effected in less than eleven
months. I’he law authorising it
erection parsed in March; thr
books for subscription were open
ed in May, and tilled in a very
short time ; the contracts wen
made in June, and the work com
menced in July. Since it was he
gun it has advauccd with as steady
and tapid a pace as the supply ol
umber would permit; but had the
contracts fir.t entered into been
iutilud, tne b.-idge would have
been limmeil some months sooner.
The Washington lingde is the

racing. The bridge is support
ed by 201 piers, 25 feet opening.
Each pier is composed oi 5 pie
ces on the flats, 5 in the chaanel,
and 7 at the draw. These piles
are driven from 20 to 30 feet into
the mud, and strong ly braced and
bolted. Ihe floor is suported by
16 stout stringers, and it is cover
ed with four-inch plank. Ihe rail
ing is strong and durable, and the
bridge is lighted by 20 lamps.—
1 here are two draws ; one of 25
feet, opening m the iiuic channel j
the other, ot 35 ieet, in the cnan
