Distressing Catastrophe.
In the history ot melancholy ac
cidents we seldom find a parallel
with the fallowing :
On .Sunday morning, the 23th
ult. Mr. [*aac Simpson of Miilford
owdfthip, butler county, went in
■o his well for the put pose of ta
king up a bucket which had fallen
in the eve ning previous. Having
been down some time, his wife
aent to see what detained him,
and on looking in the wtll disco
vered only the crown of his head
above water. Terrified and dis
tressed, she ran toiler father’s
(Mr. Matthias Richardson,) a
bout a quarter of a mile ; who
with his two sous immediately
hastened to her assistance. The
eldest being more active, got to
ihe well first and went down ;
when his father and b other came
up they discovered him in the bot
tom of the wtll motionless—Mr
Ifichaidson was then going down
himself, when the you.grst son
urged that he was the most able
to render assistance ; and having
almost rmched the boitoni cf the
well, he looked upi gasped fell
bacx, and expired. Mr. Richard.
s on now supposed that there was a
damp in the well and let down a
caudle, which immediately went
out, together with a fowl, which
rile cl immediately. The bodies
wtre immediately drawn up by
means of hooks and ropesbut
eveiy exertion to recover them
proved abortive.
I iiu» were three persons in the
vigor of life and health snatched,
•nto ihe world of bpi> its —an af
fectionate wife and small family
bereft of a tender husbmul and
kind father—die aged parents of
two dutiful bons, the support and
happiness of their old age—and
society of two promising youth*,
who liaJc iair to become vauablc

Very cliff-rent accounts of the
