We present in this day's pa
per a report of a committee ap
pointed by the Virginia Legil.
latnre 10 examine into the Hate
of their Penitentiary system ; St
to which we cannot refrain fiom
calling the attention of our rea
ders. The system is founded
on such broad and extenlive
j principles of humanity, and pre
i fents so great a reformation in
the department of judicature, as
to merit the confederation of
every state government.
From a recent examination
into the state of fevcral Peni
temiaries, we have invariably
found them to be produtliveto
the state of considerable emolu
ment* And we believe that if
an estimate was made of the
number of criminal and penal
cases which have appeared in
those (fates that have Peniien.
tiaries in them, for a fucceifion
of years, pri%r and fubjcqutnt to
the date of this policy ; that the
result would preponderate gieat
lv in favor of it.
The gross profits of the Pen.
itentiary in Virginia amounts
in the lalt year to 9,121 dollars
64 j cents; and after deducing
the commissions for fuperinicn
danls, turnkeys, &c* See. the
nett profits is estimated at £,292
dollars 27 cents.
