AUCtUSTA-VW INTKD BY DANIEL STARNES & Co. WEST END OF BRO AD STREET.
Mr JONES's
Deposition, relative to the en
quiry into General Wilkin
sons conduct —concluded.
j have at the requed of
the committee, looked o
vcr (without making, how
ever, any particular exam
ination of their respective
contents) the bundle of pa
pers said to have been re
turned by general Wilkin
son, as all the documents
in his possession, relative
to the court of inquiry, and
I am not enabled to fay ei
ther from my own recol
lection, or from any writ
ten memoranda in my pos
session, that there are any
deficient among those pa
pers which constituted the
evidence of witnesses and
the documentary evidence
produced and hied prior to
the time of gen Wilkinson’s
delivering in his defence.
Os the other papers trans
mitted by me to the war
department, together with
those at lall mentioned, and
as parcel of the fame pro
ceeding, there are missing,
the whole of general Wil
kinson’s written defence 5c
all those 55 exhibits, produ
ced for the fird time in the
courle of delivering that
defence except that I per
ceive in, the bundle of pa
pers which I believe top be
four of those
theaftidavitsof S. Dinsrnore,
h)r. G. E. Pendegraft and
captain John Bowyer, and
certain extnadts from the
correspondence of the Lou
isiana commissioners with
the secretary of date. I
perceive in the bundle, one
paper, viz : John Brown’s
affidavit, of which I have
n° recollection, nor any
written memorandum ; it
however, have been

or any written memoran
dum in my poffellion.
It was emphatically ,
commented on by general j
Wilkinson, as having been
fortunately preserved thro’
the many casualties and ha
zards to which his papers I
had been exposed, and by
which many of them had j
been dedroyed, and as fur- j
nifhing demondrative evi
dence of the innocence of
his transactions with the
Spanilli governer. It was
introduced from among a
number of letters and pa- :
pers dated to be either in
the hand writing of, or to
have been transmitted by, j
general Wilkinson’sdeccaf- |
ed agent, Philip Nolan, 5c ;
it was Rated to be an ac
count current signed by an
agent of governor Miro, 6c j
rendered to Philip Nolan, ;
and by him transmitted to I
general Wilkinson ; it was '
handed round among the !
members of the court, and'
when it came to tne to be
filed, I ran my eye hastily
over it. I cannot recoiled:,
with any precision, either
the date, the items, the gross
amount, or the balance ; •
nor cm I recoiled the name i
or quality of the Spanish
agent by whom it wai sign- t
ed and rendered ; it was :
eitherenclofed in a letter
from Philip Nolan to gen- !
eral Wilkinson, or tied up
with other papers of No- ,
lan, so that the account to- '
gethcr with a certain num- !
ber of those papers, formed j
one exibit. Ido not find !
upon recurrence to my lid, I
that the account is fpecifi
cally mentioned in it, but
I feel morally certain in my
own mind, that it was com
prised in one of two exhi
bits mentioned and descri- :
bed in that lift as follows :
“ No. 6. Papers of No
lan.” 44 No. 9. Nolan’s ‘
letters.” And further this
deponent faith not.
