by exprels from Natchidoches.
Nitchidoches, May K.
Last evening arrived Mr. j
Roberts, direct from St. A
ntonio, hearer of the glorious
news that St Antonio is in
poffieffion of the Americans.
On the last day of March, a
general battle was fought
which decided the fate of the
province. The two armies
advanced within pistol shot,
and formed in handsome or
der-being about 1200
strong, fit fur duty op each
side. The action lasted a
bout an hour before the en«
etny gave way. Their can
non was taken amounting to
six brass pieces with all their j
ammunition at the point of j
the nayunet. —Generals Sal- j
cede and Harrara comman
ded in person and fought
bravely, with many other
Spamfh officers; but were
t forced to retieat, not being I
able toftandthe superior skill i
and fortitude of the Amer- !

and Inch as have died of
their wounds finre the ac

dred men. The engagement
took place eight miles from
St. Antonio to which place
they fled, clolely pursued,
6c v/ere obliged to surrender
prisoners of war, on the ift
day of April. Too much
praise cannot be given to col,
Kemper, Major Rofli Perry
and all the American offi
cers, who fought like hs
roes. Dr. Forfjth di fl in
guified himfclfin the battle
and could hardly be prevai
led upontodrefs a wound
while the action lasted:
Captain Luckett was a Cassar
in fight—all did their duty.
Major Ross fought about |
1 5 minutes with a Spaniffi 1
Colonel, after they had dis
charged their pitfols they
fought with their swords
Ross killed him & featured
all before him, wherever lie
rode. There were oniv five
Americans and two Span,,
iards killed, of the Patriots;
bat several wounded. They
have taken a large quantity
of arms, ammunition, clo
thing, and military stores,
an acquisition much wanted.
Now, my dear friends,

Every one knows how dif

many foftanees the private
occupying a higher ground
in talent and fortune, in
their refpe&ivc counties
than his officer, and last,
though not lead, the offi

for popalar favor, all pre
sented formidable difficulties
to the cilabHffiment of dis
cipline. General Taylor
then commanded, and his
bold a n d comprehensive ge

plan, which having been
tried, has succeeded to his

OUR NAVAL POLICY.
The policy by which the
executive directs the opera
tion ol the navy in th« pre
-3
sent con ed, is we conceive,
molt judicioufiy and wifely
calculated to fubferve the
interests of the nation, and
to produce the greatefl pref- ,
sure on theenemy. Confid- 1
ering that our public {hips 1
are in number few compared '
with those of Great Britan, |
and that it would, in the na. I
ture of things, be impossible
for them to conquer the na
vy of the enemy even one
by one the goverment have
correctly chosen to instruct
our brave commanders to
cruize principally with a |
view to harrafs the mercan- !
tile property of England and
not to negledl this important ;
object for the purpose ©f lee
king, with too much ardor,
to combat, on unequal terms ■
with her {flips of war. They
will not however, go out of
their wav to avoid fuel) com
bats, where the forces are
not too di ('proportionate. !
The goverment aflurcdly
j difcountcnances the givingor
! the acceptance of naval chal-
I lenges. In the language of
one of its members, we have
not a fufficient number of
ffiips to juftify that species
of chivalry on the ocean.
The unavoidable conflicts
which muff, in the progress
of the war, occur between
the ffiips of war of the two
nations, will afford to our
naval heroes the moll ample
opportunities of displaying I
their (kill intrepidity and
valor. Not one of them
will, we imagine, miss the
chance of acquiring* that
brilliant glory to which they
so nobly aspire. Not one
of them will probaly pass j
through the conflict unnoti- 1
ced & unknown. Their jn- *
dicious opinions and patri
otic feelings will therefore j
unqueflionably harmonize
with the wile policy of the
government
In this view of the subject
the couile purlued by Coin
RODGERS since the war,
mult meet the approbation
«f every intelligent politi
cian. Although he has ne
ver avoided a conflict with
an enemys frigate, and has
fought it in two or three in- !
dances, he hasgenerally di
rected his operations againfl:
Britilhcommerce. Such too
has been the courie of capt.
Porter, of the Eflex.
I Such indeed was no doubt
I the track of all our comman
« ders ; but several of them
were fortunate enough tj
meet and conquer frigates
and Hoops of war as well as
i commerce. Balt American.
