IXTR ACT OF A LETTER, I
Camp rear Fort George, June 5
Many persons have come
in from distant parts finer
our arrival and been paroled.
Several of them itfide on ;
the banks of Grand River
(of Lake Erie) to the mid
dle and lower part of which
most of the Indians have re
tired, dreading the reward
of their cruelty. About
200 warriors were at the last
accounts fourteen miles be
iyoud the English camp * ha
ving left their heads of cat
tle behind and placed their
women and children in the
woods*
On the Ift of June* Gen.
Winder marched with his
brigade in pursuit of the
,Englilh army, which in
stead of retreating so far as
was originally expected,
took up a flrong (but to
them a critical) position a
bout 48 miles from hence,
their left towards lake Onta-j
! rio, Little Lake on their
f rear and a swamp on their
fright, holding communica
tion in front with the moun
taneous country between
that and Grand River. Ge
t neral Vincent cannot beout
- flanked, but his retreat may
dbe cafily cut off. As Gen

Chandler’s is gone also. I
{hope to be enabled to write
cheering intelligence ere

heard in that direction, and
j
by a party returned in boats
we learn that a skirmish had
taken place between a part
of our advanced corps and a
small part of the enemy.
June 6.
1 “My anticipations of Gen
Winder’s success are dilap
pointed. He lalf night fuf
fered him felf to be furpri
zed by the enemy, and
strange to relate, both he
and Chandler were taken
prisoners. For Winder lam
particularly grieved, as I
knew his zeal. In the con
futed fight which followed,
our army gained the vidory,
killing or taking 25© of the
enemy. Among the killed
is old Gen. Vincent. A par
ry of Col. Burn’s, cavalry &
the light troops distinguish
ed themselves. Our army
fell back a few miles. Gen.
Boyd &c. will set out to- <
night or to-morrow morning l
to take the command. He
is greatly efleemed in the
army, and very deservedly.
“ Some expedt that Proc
tor will join the other army
to-night or to-morrow, 1
trust not but our force is
jail lufficient.” i
