SATURDAY, M arch 7, 1801.
LIhRR'TY IS OUR MOTTO AND TRUTH OUR GUIDE,
ticn in the refult of the fevcral
votes.
In the courfc of the night it
w'as agreed from time to time,
to ballot but once an hour.
This morning, at a few minutes
after eight, it was agreed not to
ballot again until 12 at noon.
Soon after which time it was
agreed not to take another bal
lot, until 11 o’clock, on Friday
morning. The members have
retired to their repofe, without
adjourning, after having ballotted
in the whole 28 times.
On Friday, at 11 o’clock, in
the morning, the members of
the Houfe of Reprefentatives,
by Hates ballotted again, and
the votes was declared as at
firH, 8 for Mr. Jefferfon,
6 for Mr. Burr,
and 2 Hates divided.
At 12 o’clock they ballotted
again, without any alteration.
A motion was made and fe
condcd, that the next ballottincr
mould commence at 11 o’clock
on the 3d of March next, and
not before 3 this motion was
rejected by the States unani
moufiy, • •
- After this, the Speaker in
formed the houfe, that motions
in future muff come from
Hates, as in this cafe, although
the motion was moved and fe
conded, not one Hate appealed
to be in favour of it.
It was then moved and He end
ed, that the next ballotting
ffiould take place on Monday
next at 11 o’clock, and not be
fore 3 this motion was loH.
Another motion was then made
and agreed to, that the next
ballotting fhould commence to
morrow (Saturday) at 11 o’-
clock, and not before. The
members then retired. Thus,
after ballotting 30 times, the
bufinefs of the election has not
progreffed in the leaH.
In the courfe of the day, the
Speaker was about to introduce
the reading of a report from the
fecretary of fome of the de
partments i but on a cry from
fevcral parts of the houfe, that
no other bufinefs was to be at
tended to, but that of the elec
tion, the reading was waved:
It has how'ever, been acceded,
that meffages may be received
as ufual.
Saturday , February 14.
The balloting commenced at
ii o’clock, and the refult of
three votes being the fame as
the firH on Wednefday laH, the
members agreed not to ballot
again till 11 o’clock on Mon
day morning.
Monday , February 16.
34th balloting, but one vote
♦taken ; in which the ballots of
V irginia were unanimous for Mr.
Jefierfon, and likewife thole of
North-Carolma, except one dif
fentient.
On Tucfday (yeHerday) at
12 o’clock, the Speaker inform
ed the members that the time
for balloting had arrived 3 the
members accordingly proceed
ed to the 35th ballot, which
when counted by the tellers,
was declared by the Speaker to
be,
8 for Mr. Jefferfon,
, 6 for Mr. Burr,
and 2 divided as heretofore. .
It w'as then moved and fecon -
ed, that the next ballot fhould
commence on Wednefday mor
ning at 11 o’clock and not be
fore 3 this motion was loft, no
Hate voting in favour of it.
It was then moved, fccondcd,
and agreed to, that the next bal
lot fhould commence at 1 o’clock
that day, and not before; ac
cordingly when that time arriv
ed, the Speaker notified the
members as. ufual 3 and they
proceeded to the fyallot.—rThe
Hate of Vermont has generally
voted firH in the ballotting.-
Mr. Morris was abfenr, Mr. Ly
on gave the vote of that Hare
forMr. Jefferfon ; the four New-
England Hates voted for Mr.
Burr; New-York, New-Jerfey,
Fcnnfyivania voted as ufual, for
Mr.. Jefferfon ; - the four mem
bers from, Maryland who had
voted forMr. Burr, now put in
to the ballot box blank pieces
of paper, of courfe, the. four re
publican members gave the vote
of that Hate for Mr. Jefferfon.
Virginia, Kentucky, Ycn
nefiee. North-Carolina and
Georgia, voted as ufual for
Mr. Jefferfon.
South-Carolina and Delaware
put into the ballot box blank
pieces of paper.
The Speaker then declared
the vote to Hand thus—lo
fiates for Mr. Jefferfon —4
for Mr. Burr, and two Hates
had put in no votes 3 he then
declared
THOMAS JEFFERSON,
to be duly eledled
PRESIDENT of the UNITED
STATES,
for the four years enfumg, after
the fourth of March next.
AARON BURR,
Is of courle VICE PRESI
DENT. So may it he , and let
all the people Jay AMEN!
Meffages were then fe-nt to
the Prefident and Senate, with
this intelligence.
Thus after a permanent fit
ting cl feven days, and thirty
fix different ballottings, thr
choice has relultcd very nearly
according to the real fentiments
and intcrefts of the people -
It is believed that ten fixtecnths
of the people arc decidedly in
favour of Jcfferlon and Liberty,
independence and economy
four fixtecnths will include all
thole in the intereft of Britain ;
or under the vail ratifications of
her: influence, and who would
therefore chufe a difciplc of her
principles in preference to Mr.
Burr, or any other republican
for Prefident:—Two fixtecnths
indifferent upon the lubjedf,
and ready to acquicfcc under a
ny Prefident. ■ >,.
Prom die time the cleftom
were chofen to the final decifion
this day the heart of every pat
riot has palpitated with anxiety.
I now cordially congratulate ev
ery lover of his country, every
fuficrer in the caufc of civil li
berty, and efpccially my fellow
labourers, the editors of repub
