A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS his Excellency
James Jackson, late
Governor and Commander in
Chief, hath this day accepted
the appointment of Senator
from this State, in the Congrefs
of the United States, agreeably
to his elcdlion thereto on the
18th day of November, in the
year eighteen hundred by the
iegiflature, and hath Hgnified to
me his rdignationof the govern
menu
And whereas, the fourth
feflion of the fecond article of
the conflitution declares— <f in
cafe of the death or refignation
or difabiiity of the Governor,
the Prcfident of the Senate ffiall
cxercife the executive powers
of government, until fiich ciif
abilicy be removed, or until the
next meeting of the General
Aflembly.” By virtue of which
the duties of the Executive have
devolved on me.
I have therefore thought ft
to iffiie this my proclamation,
hereby notifying all officers,
civil and military, that I have
affiumed the chief magiftracy of
this Late, and am now in the
a&uai exercife of the duties
thereof—of which all perfons
arc required to take due notice,
as they will anfwer the contrary
at thelr peril.
