JLa Rue Nlcalfo, a fhabby old
carriage drawn by one iinall
horfe, was placed fo as to im
pede his paffiage. The coach
* man, though driving extremely
' tall, had the addrefs to avoivl
ir. A few minutes after, a ter
rible cxplofion broke the win
dows of the coach, and woun
ded the horfe of the I aft of the
piquet guardfmen, broke all the
windows near the fpot, killed
three women and a child. The
number of wounded at pre

rhe neighbouring houfes. Fif
teen houfes were confiderably
damaged.
Jt appears that this carriage
containeda kind of infernal ma

all over Paris; part of rhe wheel
of the carnage was thrown up
on the tiles in the cour t of the
Conful Cambaceres.
The Firft Conful purfurd his

It is two months fmcc the go

FRANKFORT, Dec. 24.
Whilft the grand army of the
French, under general Moreau,
are making a great progrtfs in
Upper Auilria, the Gallo Ba
tavian army, which at firft made
rapid advances, has been com
pelled to retreat not fo much
• from any reverfes which it fuf
tained, as through motives of
circumfpc&ion and precaution.
* General Angerau had previouf
done much in forcing with two
divilions only, (the third form
ed the liege of Wurtfburg) die
feveral corps of Simbfchen and
Albini, to a precipitate retreat.
But the former having joined a
large body of the troops of
ivlenau and of the Bavaro Pa
in the higher Palatinate,
rnefe formed a inafs of 30,000
m(’n, to which Angerau could
op'pole no more than 20,000. —
Again, the further he advanced,
the more his fituation became
endangered, becaufc his left
wing was menaced by the forces
which are collecting in Bohe
mia, on the fide of Egra.—
Notwithflanding his inferiority
of force, gen. Angerau defen
ded his ground foot by foot, in
in the actions which took place
on the 18th and 21ft. His re
treat was e flefted (lowly, and
in good order. Elc is at pre
font or, the fide bf W*iptfburg.
—Since the affair of the 19th
info. gen. Angerau has advanc
ed his head-quarters at Nurem
berg. Geb. Duhefnle marches
by Pfzcnftein towards Sulbach.
He has im poled a fine on the
city of Nuremberg of 30,000
florins, and requires bef’des
i 2.000 pairs of boots, and the
fame number of (hoes and
cloaks.
STASBURG, Dec. 27.
ArmiJUce between Prune: and
Auftria.
Bulletin of the Official Journal
the Monitvief, Paris, (12th
Nivofo) Jari. 2.
The government U;s receiv
ed this night very important
difpatches from the army of the
Rhine. The moment when
they were font, and their extent,
do not permit us to lend the
numbers of this day to the de
partments. The general of di
vifion Defolles, chief of the
fbiffi of the Rhine, in a letter,
dated the 25th December (4th
Nivofe) at the head-quarters of
Steyar, addrelfod to the focre
tary at war, announces that ge
neral Lecourbe has made from
4 to 500 prifoners, and that
gen. Richepanfe has entered
Stcycr, where the enemy left be
hind 17 pieces of cannon and
near 4000 prifoners.
That itnmenfc magazines were
found, that the lofs of the ene
my in men, horfes, and atnuni
tion is prodigious. We are
marching to Erlafch, and every
thing announces that the Aus
trians arc going to retire behind
the Trafor, or Trazen, and per
haps under the walk of Vien
■ na.
By a fecond letter from the
fame place dated Dec. 26, gen.
Delollcs informs the Miniftcr,
that the Archduke Charles has
propofed an armiftice to general
Moreau, and announced to him
that the Emperor has font a cou
rier to M. Cobcnzel, with or
ders to lign the peace. The ar
miflicc been fierr.ed at Stev-

ar. it contains 17 articles.
Tlie enemy to guarantee the
armiftice, give up to the French
army the forts of Kullein, Schar
nitz, and other points of per
manent fortifications in rhe Ty
rol, and the fortrefs of Wurtf
burg, in Franconia, and Brau
nau, in the circle of Bavaria.
LONDON, Jan. 15.
We received this morning by
exprefs, Paris papers to the
12th inft. Their contents arc
of conliderable intcreft and im
portance. The account of the
armiftice in Germany appears
not yet to have reached general
Brune; for continuing his vic
torious career, he has palled,
not only the Minco, but the A
dige, furrounded Pefchiera,
blockaded Mantua and forced
the Auftrians to evacuate Coro
na and Verona, where he has
fixed his head-quarters. The
Adige was paffed on the 1 ft ;
the Auftrians were deceived by
a falfe attack near Verona, and
from which place they were for
ced to retire, in confoquencc of
a fkilful movement made bv qc
; C
neral Delmas. Gen. Brune’s
dilpatch was a very fhort one;
k does hot Hate any particulars
of the battle, nor mention the
lob fuftained on either fide.—
The Auftrians are retreating to
wards Vicenza, and orders have
been lent to gen. Rochambean,
to halien with his divifion, for
the purpofe of harrafllng the
Auftrian right wing in its re
treat. Thefe defeats have ren
dered the momentary foe cedes
of general Sommariva, in Tuf
cany, of no ferious difad vantage
to the French, who lliil retain
podelTion of Florence and Leg
horn.
There are no accounts of any
preliminaries of peace having
been figned, nor any informa
tion given of the progress made
in the negociations at Luneville.
The great rife, however, in the
French funds, which are at
52 r-4, fufficicntly proves that
an immediate peace with Auf
tria, is confidered as certain.
The moft interefting part of
the intelligence contained in
thefe papers, relates to the mca
furfs adopted in confequence of
the late attempt upon the Firft
Conful ; 84 individuals have
been ordered to be put under
fpecial fuperintendance, and are
irtimediately to be fent out of
France : Felix Le Pelletier,
Tylot, and many perfons con
cerned in the September mafla
cres, are among the number.
Some of the perfons con
cerned in the plot to aflatfinate
the Firft Conful on the loth of
Odlober laft, at the opera houfe,
have been found guilty, and con
demned to die. Others have
been acquitted.
