RIGHTS OF WOMEN.
Pshaw, fays I, Mr. Bald
win, rights of a fiddleftick !
rights of ;?/#;/, indeed ! I fhould
not have thought of the he crea
tures talking fo much about
their rights, while the rights of
women lie neglefted. This in
deed would be a fubjeft, were
nor, as my friend Mr. Burke
fays, the age “ of chivalry
pone !
KJ
Have not we rights, Mr.
Baldwin, rights indifpntable,
natural, abftradl, and fecial,and
civil, and municipal ? Are not
“ all women equal ?” Have
they not a natural right to the
priviledge of fpccch, and have
they ever bafely bartered that
light? And what did they do
when even Mcnfieurs were em
ployed to deprive them of this
right ? did they flay at home
mending (lockings, darning
gloves, making holes for fleevc
buttons, and quilting counter
ino, nr, they vditecl ten
times more ?
Have they not the fecial right
of preference in all focieiles ?•
To they net take precedence of
every thing in breeches, every
proud he creature that calls him
lelf a lord of the creation ?
Have they not the higheft right
of all i the right of governing
their hufbands ? Who dare de
ny this ? A right, fir, for which
they paid no fmall price ; for, to
obtain it, and to have leifure and
time to exercife it, they gave
up another right, the right of
gove minor themfeles !
O O
Among the civil rights, are
O O'
we not to reckon the rights of
fcokllno- crying, falling into
O' / o / o
firs, going to watering places,
and running up lull ? fhall the
haughty aii Hoc racy of men deny
us tacit* rights !
No —Mr. Baldwin, no, pe
ri fh die ignoble thought—wo-
O O
men, fir, have rights; And the
time will come, when the an
fwerers of Burke (1 am told
they are all bachelors or old maids )
iliail be a drained of themfelves,
and view us with the gallant eyes
of a Burke, <c juft riling above
the horrizon.**
But I beg pardon, Mr Bald
win : I trouble you with this on
ly becaufe my brother Sam will
not write on the fubjedl ; for
foothhe fays wc have more rights
than we know what to do with.

out of a bay on the coaftof Cu

night of the 2 2d inflant. '1 lie
fchooner was one of the feveral
armed vcfiHs protecting a fleet
of fmall craft, employed ip col
lecting the king’s duties, the
whole of which would have ia 11 ell
an cafy prey, had not the Spa
niards been fully apprized of the
intended attempt by a licenced
vcffd from this place which
reached on the iSth.
We are extremely concerned
to flare, his majefly’s mips have
loft a lieutenant, two ni id fh ip
men, and five killed, and a few
more wounded.
April 7.
This day arrived the fchooner
Eellona, capt. \\ iifon, from
Baibadoes. Captain W iifon a
few days ago, in lat. 15, long.

fail, which he took to be feven
French line of battle fnips, and
three frigates, one of them gave
chafe for five or fix hour.., then
fbortenecl fail, wind at K. w ith
their ftarboard tacks on board.
He believed them to be bound
to St. Domingo.
Arrived on Sunday his majef
ty’s fchooner Adftivc, one of the
Jamaica fquadron, with difpat

paper of Tucfday the 27th of
March. In her way from the
Gulph, fliC fell in with the Da

negroes on Doarcl. She nad
been brought in here and ac
quitted as Danifti property , but
was luckily fell in with by the

April 17.
From accounts recently re
ceived from various quarters,
it would feem, that our govern
ment had adually declared war
agamft the Danes and Swedes,
as it has ordered th.e reduction
01 the Wcft-India colonics.
By the arrival of his majefty’s
fliip Bollon, we are informed of
the capture of St. Bartholomew’s
from the Swedes, and St. Mar
tin's from the French and Dutch.
Sr. Bartholomt w’s, the only
pofiefilon of the Swedes in the
Weft-Indies, is hut a fmall ifiand,
but is fertile and well cultivated ;
and from its hitherto neutral
lunation, a place of confiderable
trade, but of no ftrengch.
St. Thomas, and St. Croi::,
are Danifti iflands, and are of
more importance. The firft,
though a very fmall Hand in
deed, is valuable, from us fine
harbour, capable of admitting
ftiips of the line, and for -its
other commercial advantages.
Its trade has been very confide -
ruble indeed, and its inhabitants 1
—of all nations, very numerous,
and are fuppofed to be little |
fhortof 20,000. Its principal !
fortrefs, or place of defence, is
badly fituated, and is in th.e
middle of the town, and com
manded by hills on the land fide.
Ships of the line can come near !
v nough to batter it and the town 1
about their cars.
. St. Croix, is really valuable
fie rn natural advantage:. it fzc
I is at it aft equal to this I hand.—
1 The whole is a garden fpot, and
under a high irate of cultivation.
It has two harbours and fcrtrelles,
but of little firengr.h j and its
chief inhabitants are Enghfh.
