Capt. Fine, of # the fchooner

they were putting the town in

and that the militia were order

CHARLESTON, May 5.
Arrived lad night, the Englifh
brig Mary Ellen, capt. Sherrat,
58 days from Gibraltar.
Capt. Sherrat informs, that
the French fleet under admiral

naffed Gibraltar about mid-day
Oil the 9th February—on the

with four fail of the line, follow

were laid to have 4000 troops
and a great number of females

Keith j who, with 6 fail of the
line, and 13,000 troops under
the command of general Aber
crombie, were waiting at the
ifland of Cyprus until the feafon

rations in Egypt. From this
quarter, the accounts at Gibral
tar dated, that the French troops
though very much diflatisfied
with their lunation and their
country, were fecurely eftablifh

the Grand Vizir, were very nu
merous, but illy provided, and
badly difciplined.

<c EPHRAIM,” a writer in
a late Philadelphia paper, in ap
plauding the affociation of ladies
for the relief of the did refled
widow and hungry orphan, calls
upon the young ladies to retrench
one dollar per annum, from their
income, to comfort the indigent,
and concludes thus :
“ But above all it is the in
difpcnflble duty of bachelors to
contribute largely. They are in
a particular manner debtors to
the community of women for
perfifting fo long in odious ce
libacy—a date injurious to the
fair, and hoftile to the happinefs
of focicty—for as long as they
continue Angle, an equal num
ber of females mud remain in
involuntary excluAon from the
honors, dignity and ufcfulncfs cf
the married date, and continue
againft their will unprofitable to
civil fociety. This, therefore, is
a proper occafion for bachelors
to make lorne atonement for be
ing fo long ufelefstothcmfelvcs,
and for being fo cruel to the

fair, in preventing them from
being as ufcful a, they might be.
Bachelors need not be afraid of
being too bountiful—lf they had
made a propitiary facriflce of
half their income, they would
dill be in arrear to the ladles.”
