W afmngton, Jan. 15, 1802.
Gentlemen,
THE confidence which ’the
Senate and Keprdcntacives of
the flat* of Georgia are pleated
to vepofc in mv conduct, and j
their felicitations on my election
to the Chief Magiftracy, are
teftimonies which, coining from
the colietted councils of the
fhue ,< n c() u rage cont i nned e iTort s
to deferve them in future, and
hold up that reward mod valued
by me.
State-rights and flare fove
reigntics as recognited by the
conftitution, are an integial and
cflential part of our great poli
tical fabric. They arc bound
up by a common ligament with
thole of the natf ;al govern
ment, and form with it om fvl-
Cem, of which the ccnftitution
is flu law and the life. A fa
ded refpect to that internment
therefore becomes the firft in
terete and duty of all.
Y< nr rchance on the talents

concci fated in the Funeral 1 e
giflature, t sar the public good

placed ; and we need not doubt
of* char harmony which is to de- j
