M r . Swartwout, of that city.—
't he hlfcory of this rencontre
is briefly as follows : Mr. S. ic
feems, had charged Mr. C. with
being afhiated by unworthy
motives in the part he took re
lative to the concroverfy ref
peding Col. Burr; which being
reported to Mr. C. he declared
that Mr. S. was a liar and a
fcoundrel. Mr. S. infilled upon
fatisfadion. To reconcile the
parties, it was propofed that
l*[r. 3. (hould affert that he had
ftot fo rep re fen ted Mr. C. and
that the latter fhould declare
that the offending epithets were
the ponfequencc of the fuppofed
imputation. This overture
being rdt-ded by Mr. S. 2nd
the leconds having made thofe
adjuflments which the laws cf
honour (as they are called) pre
scribe, the parties met ; after
exchanging a fhof, Mr. S, de
clared himfelf not fatisfied, a
fecond and third fucceeded, Mr.
S. dill declaring himfelf not
fatisfied,- and Mr. C. offered
his hand, as a token of recon
ciliation, and offered to agree
amf to meet on the fcore of for
mer friendfhip. At the fourth
{ire, the ball lodged in Mr. S’s
left leg—Being then afked whe
ther he was fatisfied, he anfwcred
no. The furgeor. proceeded to
extract the ball, and Mr. Clin
ton repeated his regret for what
had puffed, and renewed Lis
Offer of fhaking hands, and
burying the whole in oblivion 3
but as Mr. S. would proceed,
another fhot was exchanged.—
Again Mr. S. was wounded in
die left leg 3 he yet kept his
pod, and declared himfelf not
Satisfied. Mr. C. then advanc
ed from his llation, and find he
would fire no more, and Mr. S.
though much diffacisfied, was
compelled to have his wound
dreffed, and the gentlemen, in
refptclive barges, returned
home.
On the 18th of July, a Duel
was fought on the Jerfey fhore,
of the Delaware, between Capt.
Izard of the United States army,
and a French gentleman. The
former was dangcroufly wound
